Back in 2020: One day, I was scheduling appintments in the ffice; the next, I brke my leg and had t stay in bed. Over time, I grew sick f vide cnferencing and TV marathns, and started searching fr smething new t fill the lng and restless days.
A headline n a website caught my eyes: “This Weaving Lm (织布机) Saved Me When All My Previus Hbbies Disappeared.” This was the universe speaking t me. I immediately bught all the things recmmended—a small lm, a few clrs f threads (线) and a weaving bk.
My first weaving great. I skipped the bk and free-styled a pink-and-white clth t hang n my apartment dr. It started ff OK; I strung the lm successfully and figured ut hw t slide the threaded needle ver and under the backbne f the clth.
Then, mistake after mistake, I pulled the thread way t tight, making the sides curve in. There were lts f gaps, where I culd see the white threads underneath the clred nes. I culdn’t make the lng fringe (穗) at the bttm. In a fit f frustratin, I left it a mess.
Humbled by my pride, I pened the weaving bk. I learned hw t get my edges straight and my ends neat. I figured ut hw t sew backs nt clths, stuff them with cttn and make clrful pillws t display n my sfa. Sn I started making sme fr my families and friends. I even saved up mney t buy a 4-by-4-ft lm, where I wrked n bigger bjects.
I was fficially taken with it. Actually, I’ve never been gd at anything that requires hand-eye-brain cperatin. But weaving, smehw, feels different. It requires the same steps repeated ver again and encurages yu t lse yurself in the prcess. Every time I pick up my lm, my brain quiets dwn; as my needle slips between threads, I grund myself. I’ve never lved a hbby like this.

Latest genetic analysis f Ludwig van Beethven’s hair has revealed that the cmpser had a high genetic risk fr liver (肝) disease, which culd have cntributed t his death. The discvery cntradicts the widely-believed suggestin that the cmpser died frm lead pisning, but des nt shed light n hw he came t lse his hearing.
Tristan Begg at the University f Cambridge and his clleagues have analysed the DNA f eight lcks f hair claimed t cme frm Beethven’s head t see if it culd explain the cmpser’s health issues. T make sure the hair actually came frm Beethven, researchers first examined the paperwrk fr each lck and used DNA analysis t determine the age f the samples. “Fr DNA samples frm the last few centuries, yu’ll tend t see the accumulatin f damage patterns,” says Begg. “Yu want t see these patterns cnsistent with the dcumented age f the samples.” Then they cmpared the DNA f the eight lcks. The cmbinatin f these methds led them t cnclude that five f them were frm Beethven.
Examining the DNA data, the researchers fund that the cmpser had a high genetic risk fr liver disease. Begg says this risk wuld be relatively benign fr mst peple, but Beethven’s reprtedly high alchl cnsumptin wuld have increased the likelihd that he develped the cnditin. Begg says this finding, cmbined with infrmatin frm examining his dead bdy, suggests that cirrhsis, a serius liver disease, culd have led t Beethven’s death.
Previus analysis f Beethven’s hair samples suggested he had lead pisning, but this study reveals that the earlier wrk was dne n hair frm a wman. “This kind f genetic study f a famus individual is fascinating. We hpe that by making Beethven’s genetic data publicly available fr researchers, remaining questins abut his health and genealgy (家谱) can smeday be answered,” Begg said.
8. What did the latest research find abut Beethven?
A. Lead pisning led t his death.B. His gene determined his deafness.
C. T much alchl ruined his health.D. He prbably died frm liver disease.
9. Hw did researchers ensure the hair came frm Beethven?
A. By cmbining different DNA samples.B. By examining and cllecting paperwrk.
C. By analyzing and cmparing genetic data.D. By dcumenting cnsistent damage patterns.
10. What des the underlined wrd “benign” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Harmless.B. Unacceptable.C. Additinal.D. Significant.
11. What can we learn abut genetic analysis frm the last paragraph?
A. It may make mistakes smetimes.B. It can clear up misunderstandings.
C. It needs t be mre accessible.D. It remains t be imprved.

The tmat leafminer mth riginates frm Peru and is cmmn thrughut Suth America. Hwever, it has spread thrugh Eurpe since 2007 and has becme ne f the largest pests in Mediterranean regins, threatening fd supplies. Experts arund the wrld are currently struggling with new ways t battle the mth, but it has develped resistance t pesticides (杀虫剂), leaving farmers helpless t stp the damage. Nw a new study frm the University f Prtsmuth has shwn that an answer may lie in the trpical tent-web spider.
Scientists carried ut labratry tests and fund that the spiders banded tgether t frm webs which easily caught the flying insects, which they then ate. The trpical tent-web spider perate in large grups and can create giant jined-up webs t capture bugs. Dr. Lena Grinsted, the lead authr f the study, said, “Spiders can prvide large surface areas f capture webs capable f catching insects in the air. This culd ptentially lead t a reductin f reliance n chemical pesticides, resulting in less pllutin in sils, waterways and fd chains in the future.”
Crp damage is als caused by the larvae (幼虫), which directly attack the tmat fruit, making the crp ugly and thus unmarketable. Larvae live inside the leaf until they begin the prcess f turning int a mth, making them difficult t cntrl. Hwever, scientists expect that by targeting the adult mth ppulatin, it will reduce the number f eggs being laid. In additin, the spiders build the biggest webs during the summer mnths, which will benefit the tmat planting and grwing seasn in May and June.
The researchers said the study will “pen drs fr the use f grup-living spiders t cntrl agricultural pests”, but warned that mre wrk was needed t check the spiders did nt change the eclgy f regins. Dr. Grinsted added, “Future studies are nw needed t investigate whether the spiders may negatively impact crp pllinatin (授粉) by als catching bees and ther key pllinatrs.”
12. Why is it difficult t get rid f the mth accrding t Paragraph 1?
A It is large in size.B. It is drug-resistant.
C. It spreads t quickly.D. It threatens fd supply.
13 What makes using the spiders t cntrl pests pssible?
A. Their ability t weave huge webs.B. The reductin f pest-cntrl cst.
C. Their imprtance in the fd chain.D. The pllutin f chemical pesticides.
14. Hw d scientists plan t deal with the larvae?
A. By destrying the eggs.B. By reducing fd supply.
C. By cntrlling the surce.D. By stpping them hatching.
15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Mths: The Biggest Threat t CrpsB. Mths: A Species Difficult t Cntrl
C. Spiders: The Future f Mdern AgricultureD. Spiders: An Ec-friendly Alternative t Drugs
