The alarm rang in my ear. After silencing it, I remained in bed. My mtivatin t push ahead with my PhD was disappearing, which made it hard t face each new day. Sme unexpected things amplified my truble. I started my prgram in 2020, when meetings were virtual and in-persn cntact was actively discuraged, s I had few pprtunities t frm persnal cnnectins with c-wrkers. Research became my nly fcus, and when my interest in that faded, my prject felt depressing.
After nly 1 mnth at the charity, it became clear that I’d made the right decisin. My mental health imprved and I fund it easier t cme int wrk. Things I did culd matter and energize me after all —if I chse wisely. That was exactly what I needed and desired. After that realizatin, I decided I wanted t return t my PhD prgram and make changes. I tld my teacher I wasn’t interested in the current research. T my relief, he was supprtive, and we redesigned the prject t better fit me. I will return t my prgram next mnth, ptimistic that this time will be different. But if it desn’t g as I hpe, my charity experience has given me directin and cnfidence that I’ll live a satisfying life, with r withut a PhD.
