Traveling n an airplane can be a very tiring task even in the best f circumstances, which is why when Sphie Murphy barded a recent flight frm Sydney t Melburne and nticed an "awful tensin" in the cabin(飞机座舱), she first thught it was caused by typical bad-tempered passengers. But as the flight neared its end, it became bvius that smething was very wrng.
A teenage by with Dwn syndrme (唐氏综合征) wh was traveling with his family had becme upset and wuld nt return t his seat, regardless f the cabin crew's warnings ver the ludspeaker that it was almst time t land. The pilt was frced t circle abve the airprt, delaying the landing -- and angering peple n the already tense flight.
"If it were a cartn," remembered Murphy, "there wuld have been smke cming ut f peple's ears."
As the by's elderly parents and adult brthers and sisters tried t persuade him t get ff the flr and back int his seat, but in vain. Murphy, 42 -- wh had been a teacher fr mre than 20 years -- std up and quickly headed t the back f the plane.
She fund the by in the passage between rws f seats, lying n his belly, and lay dwn n her stmach t face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favrite bk, and his favrite characters. He tld her that he felt sick and she tried t cmfrt him.
Minutes later, he allwed her t hld his hand -- and then tgether they gt prperly back int airplane seats. Murphy asked fr sick bags, and held them as the by threw up several times, including n her. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly tld him everything wuld be kay and that they'd get thrugh it tgether.
After the plane was finally able t land, n ne was impatient t step ff the flight as ne might expect. Instead, calmed passengers -- bviusly fllwing Murphy's amazing example -- allwed the by and his family t depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents tearfully thanked Murphy fr what she had dne, and a dctr sitting nearby als let her knw he had even taken ntes n her expert way f handling the situatin.

Nt all waste has t g t waste. Mst f the wrld’s 2.22 billin tns f annual trash ends up in landfills(垃圾填埋场) r pen dumps. Veena Sahajwalla, a materials scientist and engineer at the University f New Suth Wales in Sydney, Australia, has created a slutin t ur massive trash prblem: waste micrfactries. These little trash prcessrs— sme as small as 500 square feet — huse a series f machines that recycle waste and transfrm it int new materials with thermal technlgy. The new all-in-ne apprach culd leave ur current recycling prcesses in the dust.
Sahajwalla launched the wrld’s first waste micrfactry targeting electrnic waste, r e-waste, in 2018 in Sydney. A secnd ne began recycling plastics in 2019. Nw, her lab grup is wrking with university and industry partners t cmmercialize their patented Micrfactry technlgy. “The small scale f the machines will make it easier fr them t ne day perate n renewable energy, unlike mst large manufacturing plants. The apprach will als allw cities t recycle waste int new prducts n lcatin, aviding the lng, ften internatinal, high-emissin jurneys between recycling prcessrs and manufacturing plants. With a micrfactry, gne are the days f needing separate facilities t cllect and stre materials, extract elements and prduce new prducts,” says Sahajwalla.
Traditinally, recycling plants break dwn materials fr reuse in similar prducts — like melting dwn plastic t make mre plastic things. Sahajwalla’s inventin evlves this idea by taking materials frm an ld prduct and creating smething different. “The kids dn’t lk like the parents,” she says. Fr example, the micrfactries can break dwn ld smartphnes and cmputer mnitrs and extract(提取,提炼) silica (frm the glass) and carbn (frm the plastic casing), and then cmbine them int silicn carbide nanwires. This generates a cmmn ceramic material with many industrial uses. Sahajwalla refers t this prcess as “the furth R” adding “re-frm” t the cmmn phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle”.
In 2019, just 17.4 percent f e-waste was recycled, s the ability t re-frm ffers a crucial new develpment in the challenge f recycling cmplex electrnic devices. “We can d s much mre with materials,” says Sahajwalla. “Traditinal recycling has nt wrked fr every recycling challenge.” She and her team are already wrking t install the next waste micrfactry in the Australian twn f Ctamundra by early 2021, with the gal f expanding arund the cuntry ver the next few years.
47. What is the purpse f the first paragraph?
A. T present the prcess f recycling waste.
B. T intrduce a new type f trash prcessr.
C. T prve the seriusness f the trash prblem.
D. T shw the current situatin f trash recycling.
48. What are Sahajwalla’s wrds in paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A. The scale f waste micrfactries.
B. The funding f waste micrfactries.
C. The influences f waste micrfactries.
D. The advantages f waste micrfactries.
49. What des “re-frm” refer t accrding t Sahajwalla?
A. Extracting materials frm the waste.B. Updating the whle recycling prcess.
C. Generating new materials with waste.D. Transfrming waste int similar prducts.
50. Where is the text prbably taken frm?
A. A business reprt.B. A science magazine.
C. A chemical textbk.D. A fictin nvel.

Rund and Rund They G
Space is becming mre crwded. Quite a few lw-Earth-rbit (LEO) satellites have been launched int the sky, which are designed t mve arund the Earth nly a few hundred kilmetres abve its surface. SpaceX and OneWeb plan t launch LEO satellites in their thusands, nt hundreds, t duble the ttal number f satellites in rbit (轨道) by 2027.
That prmises t change things n Earth. LEO satellites can bring Internet cnnectivity t places where it is still unavailable. This will als be a surce f new demand fr the space ecnmy. Mrgan Stanley, a bank, prjects that the space industry will grw frm $350 billin in 2016 t mre than $1.1 trillin by 2040. New Internet satellites will accunt fr half this increase.
Fr that t happen, hwever, three wrries must be vercme. Debris (碎片) is the mst familiar cncern. When enugh satellites were packed int lw-Earth rbits, any cllisin (碰撞) culd cause a chain reactin which wuld eventually destry all spaceships. One slutin is t grab the satellites with prblems and pull them dwn int the Earth’s atmsphere. Anther is t mnitr space mre clsely fr debris. But technlgy is nly part f the answer. Rules are needed t deal with ld satellites safely frm lw-Earth rbits.
Cyber (网络的)-security is a secnd, lng-standing wrry. Hackers (黑客) culd take cntrl f a satellite and steal intellectual prperty, redirect data flws r cause a cllisin. The satellite industry has been slw t respnd t such cncerns. But as mre f the wrld’s ppulatin cmes t rely n the space fr access t the Internet, the need fr actin will intensify. Measures will surely be taken t prtect netwrk security.
The third issue fllws frm the first tw. If there is a simple mistake r a cyber-attack, it may cause a chain reactin which wipes ut hundreds f billins f dllars f investment. Wh is respnsible fr that? Nw the plans f firms wishing t perate large numbers f satellites are being studied. But there is a lng way t g befre the risks are well understd, let alne priced.
As space becmes mre cmmercialized, mind-bending prspects pen up: packages mved acrss the planet in minutes by rcket rather than by plane, equipment sent t ther small planets, passengers launched int rbit and beynd. All that and mre may cme, ne day. But such activities wuld raise the same questins as LEO satellites d. They must be answered befre the space ecnmy can truly develp.
51. What can we learn abut LEO satellites frm the passage?
A. They are suppsed t limit the space ecnmy.
B. They are expected t increase in large numbers.
C. They are designed t mve beynd the Earth as far as pssible.
D. They are mainly intended t bring Internet cnnectivity t remte areas.
52. T deal with debris (碎片) in space, the authr suggests _______.
A. depending entirely n the mdern technlgy
B. mnitring the mvement f spaceships carefully
C. strengthening rules t remve ld satellites safely
D. destrying all the satellites with prblems instantly
53. What des the underlined wrd “intensify” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Measure. B. Increase. C. Spread. D. Repeat.
54. What is the authr’s attitude tward the launch f LEO satellites?
A. It shuld be further cnfirmed fr its wnership.
B. It shuld be cntinued because f its advantages.
C. It shuld be dne carefully t avid ptential risks.
D. It shuld be stpped in face f the space ecnmy.
第二节 七选五(每小题2分,共10分)
Our Amazing Hands
The hand is where the mind meets the wrld. We use ur hands t build fires, t fly airplanes, and t write. The human brain, with its pen-ended creativity, may be the thing that makes the human race unique. But withut hands, all the ideas we think up wuld cme t nthing.
____55____ Study it carefully, yu will find smething interesting. The thumb (拇指) alne is cntrlled by nine separate muscles. The wrist is a grup f bnes and muscles cnnected with nerves (神经). The nerves send branches int each fingertip, which makes the fingers extremely flexible. ____56____
Early hands seemed mre unusual and interesting than any hand tday. Sme animals had seven fingers. Others had eight. But by the time vertebrates (脊椎动物) appeared 340 millin years ag, the hand had develped t nly five fingers. ____57____
Nevertheless, there are still many different types f hands in living animals. After years f research, scientists are beginning t understand the mlecular (分子的) changes in hands. ____58____ This makes the hands f different animals very similar. There is a netwrk f many genes (基因) that builds a hand, and all hands are built n that netwrk.
The discvery has given scientists a deeper understanding f the develpment f hands. A bird’s wing and a lin’s paw (爪) may appear t have nthing in cmmn. ____59____ It may just be a little mre f ne prtein (蛋白) here, a little less f anther there. In the past, scientists culd recgnize nly the utward signs that hands had develped frm a cmmn ancestr. Tday scientists are uncvering the inward signs as well.
A. Hands can ften be used fr a number f different purpses.
B. They als see that all hands start ut in much the same way.
C. It has kept that number fr reasns scientists dn’t yet knw.
D. N ne wuld dubt that the five fingers are different with each ther.
E. But the difference between them may cme dwn t a tiny change in frm.
F. The reasn we can use ur hands fr s many things is their special structure.
G. S yu can see a skilled watchmaker use his hands t set springs in place under a micrscpe.

Shared Services Need Mre Imaginatin
Suppse yu need t drill a hle in the wall t hang an item but d nt wn a pwer drill. Yu may regard it as expensive t buy a pwer drill and cnsider renting ne. Sharing is the slutin. The sharing industry is an emerging, highly flexible ecnmic netwrk that allws peple t share resurces, either free r fr a fee.
The imprtant idea f the sharing industry is that peple might nly need an item fr a relatively shrt perid. The private part f shared services has been mving twards this area since the beginning f the 1980s, and then the public part has taken nte f the benefits and cntinued fr best practice. The United States and Australia amng thers have had shared services in gvernment since the late 1990s.
With the rise f the sharing industry, the best-knwn shared bikes and shared cars have gt a lt f public attentin. This kind f transprtatin is s envirnmentally-friendly that it is increasingly ppular amng peple in many cities.
Of curse shared services dn’t need t be limited t machines. The real pay-ff in shared services prbably lies in renting ut smaller, less heavy items. Fr example, in tday’s casual envirnment, yu dn’t need a tie unless yu’re ging t a wedding r a jb interview. S sme cmpanies wuld let yu pick up a tie when yu needed it and nly when yu needed it. Anther example is an umbrella-sharing service. Since visitrs dn’t want t be carrying umbrellas all the way, it wuld be cheaper and easier t simply brrw an umbrella n ne street crner and drp it ff n anther.
Recently rganizatins that have centralised their IT functins have begun t take a clse lk at the technlgy services that their IT departments prvide fr custmers, evaluating where it makes sense t prvide technlgy cmpnents. E-mail and scanning (扫描) peratins were bvius early candidates. Many rganizatins are nw ffering their dcument-intensive peratins as a shared service. There is n dubt that peple are calling fr the expansin f shared services t mre and mre areas.
60. What is the sharing industry?
61. Why des shared transprtatin receive attentin frm peple?
62. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
Shared services are getting increasingly ppular fr their cnvenience, but there are still calls fr expansin t wider areas because they are currently restricted t machines.
63. Please prvide anther example f shared services and explain yur reasn. (abut 40 wrds)
