The place was a Victrian dream, with delicate teacups and tableclths with flwer prints. The hat shelf near the frnt dr swept us back t childhd. Stacey and I became little girls, trying n different hats until we fund the perfect ne fr ur dress-up tea party. We wuld then chse a lvely table and rder ur tea. That was a precius time, filled with laughter between scnes(煎饼) and sharing ur lives between tiny cucumber sandwiches.
Springtime descended upn Denver, and the sun lightened my heart. But I still fught lneliness almst every day. I decided t explre the Denver area. While my husband went t the ffice, I tk time t see what ur new area had t ffer.
One day, I was walking alng the street when suddenly the wrds “Tea Leaves” caught my eye. A tea rm? Here, in the land f lneliness and pain?
I walked thrugh the drs, and tears came t my eyes. It was a beautiful rm, nt Victrian, but simple and lvely. I sat dwn and rdered a pt f tea, a cucumber sandwich, and sme scnes. It felt silly and wnderful—and it felt like hme. Fr the first time since mving, I felt as if this new city and state culd be, wuld eventually be, my hme. I wuld cme back here and bring new friends. Imagine that an alien species landed n Earth and, thrugh their mere presence, thse aliens caused ur art t fade, ur music t standardize, and ur technlgical knw-hw t disappear. Actually, that is what humans have been ding t ur clsest relatives—chimps(大猩猩).
Back in 1999, a team f scientists led by Andrew Whiten shwed that chimps frm different parts f Africa be have very differently frm ne anther. Sme grups wuld get each ther’s attentin by tapping branches with their knuckles(指关节), while thers did it by ludly tearing leaves with their teeth. The team identified 39 f these traditins that are practiced by sme cmmunities but nt thers—a pattern that, at the time, hadn’t been seen in any animal except humans. It was evident, the team said, that chimps have their wn cultures.
It tk a lng time t cnvince unbelievers that such cultures exist, but nw we have plenty f examples f animals learning lcal traditins frm ne anther. Hwever, when many scientists have cme t accept the existence f animal cultures, many f thse cultures might disappear. Ammie Kalan and her clleagues have shwn, thrugh years f intensive field wrk, that the very presence f humans has gradually reduced the diversity f chimp behavir. Where we grw, their cultures weaken. It is a bitterly irnic thing t learn n the 20th anniversary f Whiten’s classic study.
“It’s amazing t think that just 60 years ag, we knew next t nthing f the behavir f ur sister species in the wild,” Whiten says. “But nw, just as we are truly getting t knw ur primate(灵长类) cusins, the actins f humans are clsing the windw n all we have discvered.”
N ne knws whether the destructin f chimp culture is getting wrse. Obviusly, cnservatinists need t think abut saving species in a cmpletely new way—by preserving animal traditins as well as bdies and genes. “Instead f fcusing nly n the cnservatin f genetically based beings like species, we nw need t als cnsider culturally based nes,” says Andrew Whiten.
28. What des the authr say we humans have been ding t chimps?
A. Ruining their culture.B. Accelerating their extinctin.
C. Treating them as alien species.D. Standardizing their living habits.
29. What is the finding f Andrew Whiten’s team?
A. Chimps demnstrate highly develped skills f cmmunicatin.
B. Chimps rely heavily upn their bdy language t cmmunicate.
C. Chimps behave in ways quite similar t thse f human beings.
D. Different chimp grups differ in their way f cmmunicatin.
30. What did Ammie Kalan and her clleagues find thrugh their intensive fieldwrk?
A. Whiten’s classic study has little impact n the diversity f chimp behavir.
B. Chimp behavir becmes less varied with the increase f human activity.
C. Chimps transfrm their culture t quickly adapt t the changed envirnment.
D. It might already be t late t prevent animal cultures frm extinctin.
31. What des the authr suggest cnservatinists d?
A. Fcus entirely n culturally-based beings rather than genetically-based nes.
B. Place mre stress n animal traditins than n their physical cnservatin.
C. Cnserve animal species in a nvel and all-rund way.
D. Explre the cultures f species befre they disappear.
D
Yu can’t see it, smell it, r hear it, and peple disagree n hw precisely t define it, r where exactly it cmes frm. It isn’t a schl subject r an academic discipline, but it can be learned. It is a quality that is required f artists, but it is als present in the lives f scientists and entrepreneurs. All f us benefit frm it and we succeed mentally and spiritually when we are able t handle it. It is a delicate thing, easily wiped ut; in fact, it blssms mst fully when peple are playful and childlike. Meanwhile, it wrks best in meeting with deep knwledge and expertise.
This mysterius—but teachable—quality is creativity, the subject f a recently-published reprt by Durham Cmmissin n Creativity and Educatin. The reprt cncludes that creativity shuld nt exist in the schl curriculum nly as it relates t drama, music, art and ther bviusly creative subjects, but that creative thinking ught t run thrugh all f schl life, infusing(充满) the way humanities and natural sciences are learned.
Nevertheless, it is arts subjects thrugh which creativity can mst bviusly be prmted. The value placed n them by the independent educatin is clear. One nly has t lk at the remarkable arts facilities at Britain’ stp private schls t understand this. But in the state educatin the extreme fcus n English, maths and science threatens t destry arts subjects; meanwhile, reduced schl budgets mean decreasing extracurricular activities.
This difference between state and private educatin is a matter f scial justice. It is simply wrng and unfair that mst children have a small part f the access t chirs, art studis and drama that their mre privileged peers enjy. As lives are affected by any number f threatening challenges—climate crisis, autmatin in the wrkplace—humans are ging t need creative thinking mre than ever. Fr all f ur sakes, creativity in educatin, and fr all, must becme a pririty,
32. What is the primary functin f the first paragraph in the passage?
A. It ffers a histrical verview f creative thinking.
B. It intrduces the precise definitin and benefits f creativity.
C. It guides the reader n t the tpic f creativity in educatin.
D. It prvides evidence fr the imprtance f science educatin.
33. What is the cnclusin f a recently-published reprt?
A. Natural sciences shuld be learned the way humanities curses are.
B. Grwth f creativity shuld run thrugh the entire schl curriculum.
C. Art curses shuld be made required fr all students,
D. Students shuld learn mre bviusly creative subjects.
34. What d we learn abut the private schls in the UK?
A. They encurage extracurricular activities.
B. They attach great imprtance t arts educatin.
C. They priritize arts subjects ver maths and sciences.
D. They meet the needs f students frm different family backgrunds.
35. What shuld be dne t meet the future challenges?
A. Increasing gvernment investment in schl educatin.
B. Narrwing the existing gap between the rich and the pr.
C. Prviding all children with equal access t arts educatin.
D. Fcusing n meeting the needs f under-privileged students.

My favurite pet
Many celebrated Chinese pets f the Tang dynasty have displayed their extrardinary talents and unique intelligence in Tang petry. Amng all these pets, Li Bai has always held a special place in my heart.
As a pet, Li Bai’s majr cntributin lies in the exquisite craftsmanship f his

In essence, Li Bai’s petry serves as a timeless reminder, cntinuing t inspire generatins f readers, including myself. His pems have taught me t appreciate the fleeting mments f beauty, explre my wn creativity, and express my feelings thrugh writing.

One pssible versin:
I tk the paper f and pened the beautiful bx slwly. Inside, I fund a treasure trve f memries waiting t be unwrapped. It was a cllectin f letters, each tied with a ribbn, and labeled with a date. As I carefully untied the first letter and began t read, tears welled up in my eyes. The letters were frm my mther, written during her time in the hspital. They were filled with wrds f encuragement, lve, and wisdm. It was as if she was right there beside me, guiding me thrugh life’s challenges.
Then ne night, right after my first birthday withut Mama, I pened the birthday bx again. The letters had becme my surce f strength, and I revisited them whenever I needed guidance. Mama’s wrds had a timeless quality, ffering cmfrt and supprt even in her absence. I realized that her lve was a gift that wuld always be with me, and her unwavering belief in me had becme my guiding star. As I carefully placed the letters back in the bx, I knew that Mama’s legacy wuld live n thrugh me, in the stries I wrte with the funtain pen and the mments I recrded in the diary. The birthday bx was mre than just a cllectin f gifts; it was a testament t the enduring pwer f a mther’s lve, a lve that wuld stay with me thrughut my life’s jurney.
One pssible versin:
I tk the paper f and pened the beautiful bx slwly. It was empty. Is this a jke? I turned and lked at Mama then, and her eyes were pen again. Her eyes, which had been a deep, brilliant blue, were nw like the fall sky, bleached and sftened. She smiled a very small smile at me. I knew it was an effrt. “It’s yu,” she muthed. I read her lips. Befre I culd ask mre abut what that meant, Mm was gne. I mean, her bdy was there, but she wasn’t. It was as if she was as empty as the bx. I cried steadily fr a night, a week, a cuple f mnths, and fr abut a year. I felt empty, angry, and s alne.
Then ne night, right after my first birthday withut Mama, I pened the birthday bx again. It was as empty as the day I had put it away. “It’s yu,” I whispered t the bx. And then suddenly I knew. Mama had meant I was the bx, slid and sturdy, maybe even beautiful r at least interesting n the utside. But I had t fill up the bx t make it all it culd be. And I had t fill me up as well. Hwever, even after sugar became well-knwn, it was still t expensive fr mst peple t buy n special ccasins. Sme f the desserts that we still eat and lve tday were designed hundreds f years ag. The first recrded recipe f an apple pie was published in 1381. The first cupcake recipe happened nearly 450 years later. Due t the expensive materials needed t ck desserts, mst peple didn’t try t experiment with new techniques.
