My phne rang after I barded a plane. It was my frmer PhD adviser calling t tell me that a preprint had just psted identified flaws(缺陷) in a paper we'd published in Nature. My stmach drpped as he tld me the authrs f the critique(评论) were demanding a retractin(撤回). The plane sn tk ff. I spent the 16-hur flight prcessing a mix f emtins —disbelief, embarrassment, frustratin—and wndering what this wuld mean fr my career.
After the plane landed, I tk ut my laptp and lgged nt the airprt WiFi s I culd read the critique myself. It was harsh and thrugh, pinting ut several fundamental flaws in ur methds and in the basic data which we'd gathered frm ther studies.
The fallut was swift and intense. I received a f l d f emails and messages. Sme were frm supprtive clleagues, but many were harshly critical f ur wrk. I felt deeply embarrassed by the criticism.
We wrte a draft respnse, crrecting the apparent errrs in the data set and defending ur methds. We decided against publishing ur respnse, hwever, after receiving feedback frm peer reviewers.
When it became clear that the retractin was unavidable, I frmally ffered my resignatin(辞职) t my department head. He didn't accept it, saying a resignatin wasn't needed cnsidering the errrs in the paper were hnest mistakes.
The experience helped me grw as a scientist. I learned that it is better t be pen and accuntable, even if it means admitting mistakes. I can't expect myself t knw everything as a scientist and my wrk will be strnger if I seek ut diverse expertise and pinins.
In the end, the reality is that retractins are a necessary part f the scientific prcess—and ne that shuldn't be viewed nly thrugh a negative lens. Retractins can als be an pprtunity t learn and imprve. Hnest mistakes happen, and researchers shuld be encuraged, nt punished, fr ding the right thing and retracting flawed wrk.

A. He had a reputatin fr hnesty.B. He made mistakes unintentinally.
C. He crrected his mistakes in the paper.D. He had made cntributins t the department.
27. What did the authr learn frm his experience?
A. Retractins can be a chance t learn.B. Scientists ught t knw everything.
C. Hnest mistakes are unavidable in science.D. Admitting mistakes can be really embarrassing.

When it came t imaging the future, Arthur C. Clarke stubbrnly refused t take credit fr any predictins. The Internet, 3-D printers, email: he may have described them all lng befre they existed. As a science fictin writer, he came up with the idea f a “persnal transceiver” that is small enugh t be carried abut, able t cntact with anyne in the wrld and perfrm glbal psitining, making getting lst a thing f the past. Elsewhere, he predicted everything frm nline banking t reusable spacecraft. His best remembered fictinal wrk f all is 2001 : A Space Odyssey. It als happened t frecast the iPad, cmputer sftware that is able t read lips, and space statins.
Interestingly, his visin f the future has barely aged. Fr example, life in Sri Lanka inspired his 1979 nvel, featuring a “space elevatr”, a planet-t-space transprtatin system that wuld d away with the need fr rcket travel. Thse human settlements n Mars r Venus are decidedly behind schedule(we humans were expected t have set ft n bth by 1980),and we're still lking fr the key that shuld have fully unlcked the languages f whales and dlphins by 1970.
It's a way f thinking that was likely fuelled by his inability t be anything ther than utterly absrbed in all that interested him. At the very start f his career, he shared a flat n Lndn's Gray's Inn Rad with fellw science fictin writers wh nicknamed him “Eg” because f his talent fr tuning ut (关掉)distractin. Once he'd becme a big enugh name t be interviewed, he'd send jurnalists hme laded with research papers.
He nce said, “Trying t predict the future is a discuraging and risky ccupatin.” If a predictin sunds at all reasnable, technlgical prgress is sure t leave it seeming “ridiculusly cnservative”. But if, by a miracle, a persn were t be able t describe the future exactly as it will unfld, “His predictins will sund s absurd and far-fetched that everybdy wuld laugh him t scrn(轻蔑).”
28. What can we infer frm the first paragraph?
A. Clarke is an imaginative science fictin writer.B. Clarke is crazy abut the future devices.
C. Clarke is expert at telling ne's frtune.D. Clarke is a rarely talented inventr.
29. The examples in Paragraph 2 prve ________.
A. there is n need fr rcket travel in futureB. unlcking the languages f animals is ahead f time
C. humans were expecting t settle n Mars by 1980D. Clarke's predictins still seem impssibly distant
30. Why was Clarke called “Eg” by his fellws?
A. He culd fcus all his mind n smething.B. He cared mre abut himself than thers.
C. He was absrbed in what interested him.D. He was prud f being a big name.
31. What des Clarke stress in the last paragraph?
A. The rapid prgress f technlgy.B. The absurdness f sme predictins.
C. The difficulty f predicting the future.D. The miracle f dependable predictins.
D
A new study suggests water may have existed n Mars much mre recently than past evidence has shwn. The research is based n data cllected by China's Zhurng explrer vehicle. The explrer arrived n the planet in 2021.
Tday, Mars has a cld desert climate. But past studies have prvided evidence that ancient Mars had large amunts f water. This is believed t have included rivers, lakes and ceans. A study suggested that 4.3 billin years ag, Mars likely had an cean cvering nearly half f the planet's nrthern hemisphere(半球).
There are different theries fr what caused large amunts f water t disappear frm Mars. The mst likely explanatin is that the liquid escaped when the planet's atmsphere thinned ver time. This let the water evaprate(蒸发), turning the Martian surface int a frzen desert. The evapratin happened abut 3 billin years ag.
In the new study, researchers said the Chinese rver bserved salt-rich sand dunes(沙丘)n the surface. The dunes cntained breaks, crusts and small hills. The team said these landfrms prvide evidence that the land had frzen and then melted in the areas studied. The melting culd have happened as recently as a few hundred thusand years ag, the study said.
The rver's bservatins were made in an area called Utpia Planitia, a large flat area, called a plain, in Mars's nrthern hemisphere. The researchers said they believed the dunes were likely frmed smetime after 1.4 millin t 400,000 years ag, pssibly even mre recently. Cnditin s during that perid were likely similar t hw things are n Mars tday.
The researchers said they believed small penings filled with salty water were created by melting frst r snw. The team ruled ut wind as a cause, as well as frst made f carbn dixide, which makes up mst f the Martian atmsphere.
“The rver has nw prvided evidence that there may be a wider distributin f this prcess n Mars than previusly identified,” said Mary Burke. She added that althugh the evidence suggests small amunts f water, it culd still be imprtant in identifying envirnments that culd supprt life.
32. What can we infer abut the lst water n Mars frm the third paragraph?
A. It was absrbed int a desert.B. It went deep undergrund.
C. It escaped int space.D. It flwed away gradually.
33. What evidence f the Martian surface water was fund by Chinese researchers?
A. Melted frst and snw.B. Sme sand dunes rich in salt.
C. The frst made f carbn dixide.D. A plain in Mars's nrthern hemisphere.
34. Hw des Mary think the new finding will help scientists?
A. T judge the frmatin f dunes.B. T map the distributin f water.
C. T assess the rle f wind and frst.D. T find envirnments suitable fr life.
35. What might be the best title fr the text?
A. China's Rver Makes a Grundbreaking DiscveryB. Signs f Water n Mars Are Identified
C. Water Is Mre Widespread n MarsD. Mars Has a Cld Desert Climate

“Well,” I answered, “yu're cmplaining abut my cmplaining, s actually, yes, I am hearing yu cmplain right nw.”
His eyes widened. Sweat frmed n his upper lip. Then he grabbed his car keys and ran ut the dr.

My stmach drpped as he tld me the authrs f the critique(评论) were demanding a retractin(撤回).”
根据第三段的第二、三、四句话“I received a fld f emails and messages. Sme were frm supprtive clleagues, but many were harshly critical f ur wrk. I felt deeply embarrassed by the criticism.”
通过第五段的第二句话“He didn’t accept it, saying a resignatin wasn’t needed cnsidering the errrs in the paper were hnest mistakes.”
通过全文最后一段“In the end, the reality is that retractins are a necessary part f the scientific prcess ——and ne that shuldn’t be viewed nly thrugh a negative lens. Retractins can als be an pprtunity t learn and imprve. Hnest mistakes happen, and researchers shuld be encuraged, nt punished, fr ding the right thing and retracting flawed wrk.” 故选A。

根据文章第三段的第二句话“At the very start f his career, he shared a flat n Lndn's Gray's Inn Rad with fellw science fictin writers wh nicknamed him ‘Eg’ because f his talent fr tuning ut(关掉) distractin.”

根据文章最后一段提到的“She added that althugh the evidence suggests small amunts f water, it culd still be imprtant in identifying envirnments that culd supprt life.(她补充说:尽管这个证据表明水含量很小,但它在确认可以支持生命存在的环境方面仍然很重要。)”
