“I like pigs,” Winstn Churchill suppsedly nce said. “Dgs lk up at us, cats lk dwn n us, but pigs treat us as equals.” Whether Churchill’s cntemprary Gerge Orwell als liked pigs is less clear. But he, t, surely saw smething in them that was lacking in ther dmestic beasts, fr it was they wh ended up running the shw in nvel Animal Farm. Pigs, then, are intelligent scial creatures.
And, like all animals, they smetimes fight. A study just published in Animal Cgnitin by Ivan Nrscia, a bilgical anthrplgist at the University f Turin, in Italy, and his clleagues, lked at hw a grup f 104 dmestic pigs went abut reslving such incidents. In ttal, Dr. Nrscia and his team studied the details f 216 pig cnflicts ver the curse f six mnths.
Sme pigs tend t be attackers; thers tend t be victims. Wh is what depends largely n weight, fr, amng pigs punds mean pwer. The attacker might bite, kick, bump r lift the victim (r string tgether a sequence f thse actins). Mst cnflicts ended in secnds, but sme lasted a minute r tw.
In mst animal species that wuld be that. Hwever, many f the pig cnflicts Dr. Nrscia bserved had interested parties beynd the prtagnists (主角). He therefre wanted t understand the rle f these bystanders in reslving fights —and what this says abut pigs’ cgnitive (认知) abilities.
Since there was usually nt enugh time fr a bystander pig t intervene during the heat f a cnflict (thugh this did ccur), he and his clleagues lked at what happened in the three minutes directly fllwing an aggressive interactin. Smetimes, they fund, the prtagnists made up n their wn —fr instance, by tuching nses.
On ther ccasins, thugh, a third pig stepped in. Smetimes this bystander acted as a peacemaker, engaging with the attacker and reducing the number f subsequent attacks cmpared with what might therwise have been expected. Smetimes, by cntrast, the bystander engaged with the victim. This appeared t calm the victim dwn, fr it reduced anxiety-related behavir such as shaking and scratching.
    28. Why des the authr mentin Winstn Churchill in the first paragraph?
    A. T prve pigs are clever.B. T shw pigs are inspiratinal.
    C. T state Churchill lves pigs.D. T intrduce the tpic f the text.
    29. What prbably decides n the pigs’ rles in pig cnflict?

    C. Their safety needs.D. Their cgnitive abilities.
    30. Why did Ivan Nrscia and his clleagues cnduct the study?
    A. T cmprehend the rle f bystanders in cnflict reslutin.
    B. T figure ut the relatinship between pigs.
    C. T recrd the details f 216 pig cnflicts.
    D. T find ut the reasn fr pigs’ cnflicts.
    31. Hw will the bystander interact with the victim after a fight?
    A. By shaking it.B. By tuching its nse.
    C. By scratching its back.D. By ffering cmfrt t it.
    D
Every language and culture has curse wrds (脏话). What gives a curse wrd its pwer is partly its meaning and partly its sund. “In English, fr example, curse wrds tend t cntain a high percentage f plsive (爆破音) sunds, including P, T and K, ” said Ryan McKay, a psychlgist at University f Lndn.
Dr. McKay teamed up with his clleague Shiri Lev-Ari t learn whether this familiar pattern went beynd English. They wndered whether it might even represent what’s called sund symblism. Sund symblism is when a wrd sunds like what it means.
The researchers first asked fluent speakers f Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Krean and Russian t list the mst vulgar (粗俗的) wrds they culd think f. Once they’d made a list f each language’s mst frequently used curse wrds, the researchers cmpared these with neutral wrds frm the same language. In these languages, they didn’t find the plsive sunds that seem cmmn in English curse wrds. “Instead, we fund that the vulgar wrds were defined by what they lacked: the apprximant (近似音) sunds that include letters I, L, R, W and Y,” Dr. Lev-Ari said.
Next, the scientists invited 215 native speakers f six languages: Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, German and Spanish. The participants listened t pairs f wrds in a language they didn’t speak, and guessed which wrd in each pair was ffensive. In reality, all the wrds were invented. Fr example, the researchers started with the Albanian wrd “zg,” fr “bird,” and created the pair f fake wrds “yg” and “tsg.” Participants were mre likely t guess that wrds withut apprximants, such as “tsg,” were curses.
Finally, the researchers cmbed thrugh the dictinary fr English curse wrds and their cleaned-up versins. Once again, the clean versins included mre f the sunds I, L, R, W and Y.
A 20th-century linguistic principle claimed that the sunds f wrds were arbitrary: Any wrd culd have any meaning. With curse wrds, thugh, as in ther cases f sund symblism, “the sunds themselves seem t carry meaning,” said Lev-Ari. “That’s a new thing,” said linguist Benjamin Bergen. “Curse wrds acrss languages, unrelated t each ther, may pattern similarly.” He als pinted ut, t make sure the pattern f apprximants missing frm curses isn’t an accident, it wuld be nice t find it in an even larger sample f languages.
    32. What is the purpse f McKay and Lev-Ari’s research?
    A. T analyze a phenmenn.B. T explain a definitin.
    C. T cnfirm an assumptin.D. T challenge a thery.
    33. What were the participants asked t d in the secnd part f the research?
    A. T tell the rude wrd accrding t its sund.
    B. T make up new curse wrds frm real wrds.
    C. T decide which curse wrds are used mre frequently.
    D. T identify the apprximants in curse wrds.
    34. Accrding t Lev-Ari, which f the fur is likely t sund ffensive?
    A. TusckB. SlaC. DarnD. Biach
    35. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
    A. The ld linguistic principle f sunds and meanings is wrng.
    B. In sund symblism, a wrd’s sund represents its meaning.
    C. The research reveals the similarities between different languages.
    D. The result f the research is nt fully accepted by scientists.

N mre than 20 paces in the bg(沼泽) was a huge Alaskan timber wlf - caught in ne f Trapper Gerge’s traps.
Old Gerge had died the previus week f a heart attack, s the wlf was lucky. Cnfused and frightened at my apprach, the wlf backed away. Then I nticed smething else: It was a female, and her teats were full f milk. Smewhere there was a den f hungry pups (小狼) waiting fr their mther.
Frm her appearance I guessed that she had been trapped nly a few days. That meant her pups were prbably still alive. But I suspected that if I tried t release the wlf, she wuld turn aggressive and try t tear me t pieces.
S I decided t search fr her pups instead and began t lk fr tracks that might lead me t her den. Frtunately, there were still a few remaining f snw. After several mments, I sptted pups’ marks n a trail.
The tracks led a half mile thrugh the frest, then up a slpe cvered with many rcks. I finally sptted the den at the base f an enrmus spruce, There wasn’t a sund inside. Wlf pups are shy and cautius, and I didn’t have much hpe f inviting them utside, But I had t try. S I began imitating the high-pitched(声音很尖锐的) sund f a mther wlf calling her yung. N respnse. A few mments later, after I tried anther call, fur tiny pups appeared. They culdn’t have been mre than a few weeks ld.
