Wh is a Real Danger? Cyclists r Pedestrians?
We are having a debate abut this tpic. Here are sme letters frm ur readers.
Yes, many cyclists behave dangerusly. Many drivers are disrespectful f cyclists. But pedestrians are prbably the wrst ffenders. Peple f all ages happily walk alng the pavement with eyes and hands glued t their mbile phnes, quite unaware f what is ging n arund them. They may even d the same thing while crssing a rad at a pedestrian crssing r elsewhere. The rest f us have t evade (避让) them r just stand still t wait fr the unavidable cllisin. The real prblem is that sme pedestrians seem t be, at least fr the mment, in wrlds f their wn that are, t them, much mre imprtant than the welfare f thers.
    —Michael Hran
I lve the letter frm Bb Brks abut cyclists (Viewpints, May 29). I am afraid they seem t think they wn the rads. I was walking acrss Altrincham Rad ne mrning when a cyclist went rund me and, n being asked what he was ding, shuted at me. The gvernment built a cycle lane n the rad, but it is hardly used. The plice d nthing. What a laugh they are! The cyclists shuld all have t be made t use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, flurescent (发荧光的) jackets and lights at night and in the mrning. They shuld pay sme srt f tax and be fined fr nt wearing them.
    —Carl Harvey
Cyclists jump n and ff pavements (which are meant fr pedestrians), ride at speed alng the pavements, and think they have a special right t g thrugh traffic lights when they are n red. I was almst kncked dwn recently by a cyclist riding n the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next t him. Other rad users, including hrse riders, manage t bey the rules. S why nt cyclists? It’s abut time they were registered and insured, s when they d hit a pedestrian r a vehicle r cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an pprtunity t claim cmpensatin.
    —JML

Many f yu may have used Siri, a vice assistant f US tech cmpany Apple. Yu nly have t say “hey Siri” and it will answer t yur cmmand. Hwever, we may be sacrificing ur privacy t enjy this cnvenience.
Accrding t a recent reprt by the Guardian, Siri can be accidentally triggered and start recrding private cnversatins, such as discussins between dctrs and patients. Sme f these recrdings are then given t wrkers utside the cmpany t review. Apple claimed the data was used t help Siri imprve, but users were nt infrmed f this measure in the first place.
Apple’s Siri is nt the nly vice assistant t cme under fire. In 2018, Alexa, a vice assistant develped by US tech cmpany Amazn, recrded a private cnversatin between a cuple and sent it t a stranger withut their permissin.
These issues deepened cncerns that tech cmpanies are infringing users’ rights f privacy. Many peple have lng feared that tech cmpanies are listening and cllecting data frm private cnversatins, reprted Frbes. Using this data, third party cmpanies culd then paint an accurate picture f users’ habits and preferences in rder t serve them mre targeted advertisements, r even wrse, sell this private data.
Despite this risk, the ppularity f vice assistant seems t be unstppable. “In the near future, everything frm yur lighting t yur air-cnditining t yur refrigeratr, yur cffee maker, and even yur tilet culd be wired t a system cntrlled by vice,” cmmented The Atlantic.
Clin Hrgan wrte n the blg site Medium that he believed peple’s daily lives will sn becme a surce f data. “The sunds f ur hmes, the symphny f life — laughing, crying, talking, shuting, sitting in silence — will n lnger be cnsidered memries, but data,” he wrte.
T deal with the issue, Blake Mrgan, reprter fr The Atlantic, believed that the answer is transparency. “All cmpanies need t have messaging ready t explain t custmers what they d with private data,” she wrte n The Atlantic.
    24. What des the underlined sentence mean?
    A. There are ther fire-prf vice assistants.
    B. Other vice assistants als need imprvements.
    C. Other vice assistants are als being develped.
    D. There are ther vice assistants being criticized.
    25. What seems t be peple’s biggest cncern abut vice assistants?
    A. Sending their message.
    B. Serving them targeted advertisements.
    C. Making n imprvements.
    D. Invading their privacy.
    26. What shuld cmpanies d t slve the prblem, accrding t Blake Mrgan?
    A. T explain their use f the data t custmers.
    B. T make their data mre transparent.
    C. T stp cllecting data thrugh vice assistant.
    D. T slw dwn the pace f technlgy advancement.
    27. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?

    D. T criticize cmpanies’ invading custmers’ privacy by cllecting data.

Everyne wuld agree that it is parents’ jb t teach their kids right frm wrng. The rise in teen crime suggests that sme parents are failing at these tasks. T crrect the prblem, lawmakers in sme states require parents t serve jail time when their children get int serius truble again and again. The lawmakers hpe that this punishment will mtivate parents t take their respnsibilities seriusly.
Supprters f these laws believe that the threat f jail will scare parents int paying mre attentin t their teens’ behavir than befre. They think that these parents wuld be happy t let the state try t straighten ut their kids at juvenile detentin centers (少管所), because the centers tk the respnsibility ff the parents’ shulders. With the new laws, the respnsibility is put back n the parents. “The hpe is,” a supprter said, “that if parents are held legally respnsible, they’ll wrk harder t keep their yungsters in line.”
Hwever, many peple think the laws are unfair. They argue that parents shuld nt be punished fr the criminal acts f their children, unless it can be shwn there is a cntributry fault n the parents’ part.
Peple wh ppse parental respnsibility laws als believe that punishing parents wn’t create a change in the kids’ behavir. These peple argue that parents may nt be at fault. The children f gd parents can fall in with the wrng kids and get int truble, they say. Wrse yet, if mm is in jail, there may be n ne at all t cntrl her kid.
The unfrtunate fact is that jailing a parent punishes the rest f the family. The jailed parent cannt wrk t help supprt the family and may als be fired frm a jb fr missing t much wrk. Furthermre, little evidence exists t supprt the idea that the threat f punishment imprves a parent’s ability t cntrl a teenager. Oppnents f parental respnsibility laws say that parents wh are in this situatin need help, nt a jail sentence.
    28. The phrase “keep their yungsters in line” (in Paragraph 2) is clsest in meaning t “________”.
    A. get their kids t stay at hme
    B. make their kids behave well
    C. help their kids make a living
    D. require their kids t queue in public
    29. Which f the fllwing sentences may best end Paragraph 4?
    A. S, they believe that it’s easy fr mm t cntrl her kid’s behavir.
    B. S, they believe that mm shuld be jailed fr her cntributry fault.
    C. S, they believe that lack f mm’s cntrl may then lead t mre crime.
    D. S, they believe that mm’s cntrl has a negative effect n her kid’s behavir.
    30. Oppnents f parental respnsibility laws think that ________.原创
    A. parents shuld never be punished fr their kids’ crimes
    B. respnsible parents needn’t wrry that their kids will cmmit crimes
    C. the laws are unfair even if they help parents cntrl their kids
    D. jailing a parent may place the family int an unexpected situatin
    31. What des the passage mainly talk abut?
    A. Hw parents deal with yung trublemakers in their daily life.
    B. What parents need when their kids cmmit crimes again and again.
    C. Whether parents shuld be jailed fr their kids’ criminal acts.
    D. Why laws shuld be made t hld parents respnsible fr their kids.

T many peple, hney bees symblize prsperity (兴旺), sustainability and envirnmentalism. But as a hney bee researcher, I have t tell yu that nly the first item n that list is defensible. Althugh they are imprtant fr agriculture, hney bees als destabilize(使动摇) natural ecsystems by cmpeting with native bees - sme f which are species at risk.
The rise in hbby beekeeping, nw a trendy activity fr hundreds f thusands f Americans, fllwed strng awareness campaigns t “save the bees.” But as a species, hney bees are least in need f saving Sheila Clla, a cnservatin bilgist, says, “Peple mistakenly think helping hney bees is smehw helping native bees. They have a surprisingly pr understanding f the diversity f pllinatrs (传粉者) and their rles in pllinatin.”
There are millins f hney bee clnies (群) in Nrth America. Arund 30,000 bees per clny, that’s rughly a billin hney bees in Canada and the U.S. alne. Huge numbers f hney bee clnies increase cmpetitin between native pllinatrs, putting even mre pressure n the wild species that are already in decline. Hney bees are extreme generalist(多面手) fragers (觅食者), leading t explitative cmpetitin — that is , where ne species uses up a resurce, nt leaving enugh t g arund.
Alfred Valid and Pedr Jrdan, researchers frm the Spanish Natinal Research Cuncil, used the Canary Islands t study hw hney bees affect the native pllinating cmmunity. In the highlands f the islands’ Teide Natinal Park, thusands f hney bee clnies are intrduced seasnally fr hney prductin and remved again at the end f the flwer seasn, creating an excellent cnditin fr experimentatin. Their results d nt make hney bees lk like the sustainability celebrities they have becme. Bringing in hney bees reduced the cnnectedness(连通性) f the plant-pllinatr netwrks. Besides, the resilience (恢复力) f the ecsystem has als declined.
I used t believe that hney bees were a gateway species, and that cncern ver their health and prsperity wuld spread t native bees, benefiting them, t. Hwever, evidence shws that misguided enthusiasm fr hney bees has likely been the native bees’ disaster.
    32. Hw des the authr feel abut the rise in hbby beekeeping?
    A. Surprised.B. Cnfused. C. Cncerned. D. Pleased.
    33. Hw are native pllinatrs affected by intrduced hney bees?
    A. They have truble finding fd.
    B. They becme generalist fragers.
    C. They get prtected as hney bees.
    D. They fail t frm their wn clnies.
    34. What did the experiment n the Canary Islands shw cncerning hney bees?
    A. They fitted int the native pllinating cmmunity.
    B. They imprved the sustainability f the islands.
    C. They shrtened the flwer seasn.
    D. They slwed the recvery f the ecsystem.
    35. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. The prblem with hney bees
    B. Fcus n hney bees, nt native bees
    C. Save the bees, save the planet
    D. The threat t hney bees

根据第二段“Many drivers are disrespectful f cyclists. But pedestrians are prbably wrse ffenders.(许多司机不尊重骑自行车的人。但行人可能是更糟糕的违规者)”和第四段“The real prblem is that sme pedestrians seem t be, at least fr the mment, in wrlds f their wn that are, t them, much mre imprtant than the welfare f thers.(真正的问题是,一些行人似乎,至少目前,沉浸在他们自己的世界,对他们来说,自己比其他人的幸福更重要)”可推断,Michael Hran写信主要为了展示一些行人对道路安全构成威胁。故选C。
根据Carl Harvey所说的话“The cyclists shuld all have t be made t use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, flurescent (发荧光的) jackets and lights at night and in the mrning. they shuld pay sme srt f tax and be fined fr nt wearing them.(骑自行车的人都应该在早上和晚上使用自行车道和戴头盔,佩戴荧光夹克和灯。如果不穿他们应该支付一些税收和罚款)”可知,Carl Harvey建议要求骑自行车的人在他们自己的车道上骑行。故选B。
23.推理判断题。由文章开头“Frget Cyclists, Pedestrians are Real Danger. We are having a debate abut this tpic. Here are sme letters frm ur readers.(忘记骑自行车的人,行人是真正的危险。我们正在就这个问题进行辩论。下面是读者的来信)”以及三封信的具体内容可知,这篇文章主要探讨了谁是道路安全的真正隐患,是骑自行车的人,还是行人?故选A。

In 2018, Alexa, a vice assistant develped by US tech cmpany Amazn, recrded a private cnversatin between a cuple and sent it t a stranger withut their permissin.
These issues deepened cncerns that tech cmpanies are infringing users’ rights f privacy.(这些问题加深了人们对科技公司侵犯用户隐私权的担忧。) Many peple have lng feared that tech cmpanies are listening and cllecting data frm private cnversatins, reprted Frbes.(据《福布斯》报道,长期以来,很多人都担心科技公司会监听和收集私人谈话中的数据。)
根据最后一段“All cmpanies need t have messaging ready t explain t custmers what they d with private data,” she wrte n The Atlantic.(她在The Atlantic上写道:“所有公司都需要准备好信息,向客户解释他们如何处理私人数据。”) 故选A。

B 29. C 30.D 31. C
根据第一段“Everyne wuld agree that it is parents’ jb t teach their kids right frm wrng. The rise in teen crime suggests that sme parents are failing at these tasks.”(每个人都认为教给孩子分清好与坏是父母的事情。 可知,因为父母没有教育好孩子才导致孩子犯罪,所以“ if parents are held legally respnsible, they’ll wrk harder t keep their yungsters in line.”
根据上文“The children f gd parents can fall in with the wrng kids and get int truble”(好的父母的孩子们可能会跟坏孩子们在一起玩并陷入麻烦)可知,如果因为孩子犯罪,母亲再被判刑,那么很有可能就更加没有人管孩子,孩子犯罪的可能就会更大了。
根据第四、五段“Wrse yet, if mm is in jail, there may be n ne at all t cntrl her kid. …The unfrtunate fact is that jailing a parent punishes the rest f the family. The jailed parent cannt wrk t help supprt the family and may als be fired frm a jb fr missing t much wrk. Furthermre, little evidence exists t supprt the idea that the threat f punishment imprves a parent’s ability t cntrl a teenager.”( 更糟糕的是,如果妈妈在监狱里,可能根本没有人能控制她的孩子。……

C 33. A 34. D 35. A
第一段最后一句提到“Althugh they are imprtant fr agriculture, hney bees als destabilize natural ecsystems by cmpeting with native bees - sme f which are species at risk.”(尽管蜜蜂对农业很重要,但它们也通过与本地蜜蜂竞争而破坏自然生态系统的稳定——其中一些是处于危险中的物种。)和最后一段提到“Hwever, evidence shws that misguided enthusiasm fr hney bees has likely been the native bees’ disaster.”(然而,有证据表明,对蜜蜂的错误热情可能是本地蜜蜂的灾难。)
第三段中“Huge numbers f hney bee clnies increase cmpetitin between native pllinatrs, putting even mre pressure n the wild species that are already in decline. Hney bees are extreme generalist fragers (觅食者), leading t explitative cmpetitin — that is , where ne species uses up a resurce, nt leaving enugh t g arund.”(大量的蜂群增加了本地传粉者之间的竞争,给已经减少的野生物种带来了更大的压力。 故选A。
第四段最后两句提到“Bringing in hney bees reduced the cnneetedness f the plant-pllinatr netwrks. Besides, the resilience (恢复力) f the ecsystem has als declined.”(引进蜜蜂减少了植物传粉者网络的连通性。
文章第一段最后一句“Althugh they are imprtant fr agriculture, hney bees als destabilize natural ecsystems by cmpeting with native bees - sme f which are species at risk.”(尽管蜜蜂对农业很重要,但它们也通过与本地蜜蜂竞争而破坏自然生态系统的稳定——其中一些是处于危险中的物种。) A项“The prblem with hney bees”(蜜蜂所带来的问题)表述合理,适合做文章标题。故选A。
