My family wuld describe me as anything but a risk-taker. “Grandma drives faster than yu!” my yunger sn likes t jke with me. S when I annunced I was ging t step utside my cmfrt zne and sign up fr a self- defense curse, my children, my husband, and even my mm were a bit dubtful.
A gym near my huse was ffering free tw-hur classes including bxing, wrestling and jud(柔道). I signed up fr it and fr the next days I questined whether yga wuld have been a wiser chice. The mrning f the class, I pulled up t the gym, grabbed my water bttle alng with a bit f curage I brught with me, and walked inside. We learned hw t kick and knee smene where it cunts and hw t strike using the palms f ur hands. After the instructr shwed varius escape techniques, I wndered what I was ding there. Secnds later, I reminded myself that I was n a search t push my bundaries(极限). By the time the class ended, I was full f energy.
Befre I entered the gym, I never imagined I wuld have the cnfidence and curage t thrw a punch that culd discurage smene twice my size. Almst tw years later, I still attend classes. As the ldest female in the class, I push myself t keep up, try harder and, mre imprtantly, nt quit.
Between increasing my strength and feeling cnfident abut prtecting myself (althugh I hpe I never have t test my skills utside the gym), I’m prud f the risk I tk in signing up fr the curse. Benjamin West, the father f American painting, shwed his talent fr art when he was nly six years f age. But he did nt knw abut brushes befre a visitr tld him he needed ne. In thse days, a brush was made frm camel’s hair. There were n camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair wuld wrk instead. He cut sme fur frm the family cat t make a brush.
