    A Malawian wman, Glria Majiga­Kamt, was recently awarded the Gldman Envirnmental Prize fr Africa—the wrld's leading award fr grassrts envirnmental activists.
    Glria Majiga­Kamt was then wrking fr a lcal envirnmental rganizatin with a prgram that gave gats t rural farmers, wh wuld use the gat waste t prduce lw­cst, high­quality rganic fertilizer (肥料). The prblem? The thin plastic bags cvering the Malawian cuntryside. “We have this very cmmn street fd, chiwaya, which is salty and served in little blue plastics,” Majiga­Kamt says.“Gats eat the plastic fr salty taste and they die because it blcks the ingestin (吸收) system. ”Fr her,this was the mment when it all changed. All f a sudden, she started nticing hw plastics were everywhere in the Malawian envirnment and fd system—affecting peple's living and health.
    “I remember back in the day when we'd g t the market and buy things like dried fish, which were wrapped in newspaper,” the 30­year­ld says. But thin plastics tk ff in the last decade r s as new prducers sprung up in Malawi, selling prducts like thin plastic bags at cheap prices. In fact, the Malawian gvernment decided t ban the imprtatin, prductin and distributin f single­use plastic in 2015. But befre the ban culd g int full effect, Malawi's plastic prducing industry appealed t the cuntry's High Curt against the ban, causing it t be suspended.
    When Majiga­Kamt and her fellw envirnmentalists heard abut this, they were annyed. She rganized marches and rejected the plastic industry's argument that the ban wuld hurt Malawi's ecnmy—and even debated with an industry spkesman n TV. Finally in 2019, Malawi's High Curt ruled in favr f the ban. The fllwing year, the gvernment began clsing dwn illegal plastic prducers.
    Michael Suttn, executive directr f the Gldman Envirnmental Fundatin, said, “Majiga­Kamt's fight with the plastic industry is a perfect example f the spirit f the prize.”

In 2021 nearly 380,000 peple mved t the cuntryside. “Cmfrt with digital technlgy gives yung farmers a__leg__up,” said Ch Kyung­ik, the directr f the Beginning Farmer's Centre, an institutin educating thse wh wish t kwichn at its dwntwn ffices. They sell fresh prduce n Naver, Suth Krea's largest search engine.
    The centre teaches techniques like hw t use a tractr (拖拉机) r select the best crps. It arranges a trial perid, during which ambitius farmers wrk under the guidance f an ld hand, learning what it means t d back­breaking labr frm dawn t dusk.

    When I handed in the essay t my teacher, he read it, laughed ut lud, and said, “Great. Nw, write it again.” I wrte it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thught f winning had given way t the enjyment f writing. If I didn't win, I wuldn't care.
