Have yu ever taken a persnality test and fund the results t be scarily accurate, checked yur hrscpe and had everything cme true r taken an nline quiz that tld yu precisely what yur favrite Disney princess means abut yu? Well, we certainly have dne s t many times, s we decided t d a little investigatin int hw Internet -quizzes, magazines and hrscpe bks seem t knw us s well.
We discvered that we’ve all been falling victim t the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenmenn that ccurs when individuals believe that persnality descriptins apply specifically t them, despite the fact that the descriptin is actually filled with infrmatin that applies t everyne. It was named after P. T. Barnum, a famus 19th century shwman, wh wuld famusly say, “There’s a fl brn every minute.”
Indeed, Barnum prved t be right, as pseudscience —such as astrlgy and persnality tests — remains ppular t this day. The Bamum effect explains why extremely general statements, such as the results f yur persnality test, seem s specific t yu. Dn’t believe us? Well, late psychlgy prfessr Bertram Frer ffered sme prf.
In a histric study, Frer cnducted a persnality test t his students. Frer cpied statements such as “Yu have a great need fr ther peple t like and admire yu.” and “Yu have a tendency t be critical f yurself.” frm the newspaper’s hrscpe clumn and gave a test t every student. Frer asked his students t rate the accuracy f the test frm ne t five, with “ne” being the least accurate and “five” being the mst accurate. The average rating was 4.26. The universally high ratings frm students n the persnality test supprted the Barnum effect.
One f the mst imprtant factrs when reprducing this study is t keep the statements as vague as pssible, with a mix f mstly psitive and sme negative cntent. Fr example, using the phrase “at times” makes fr a pwerful Barnum Effect. See “At times yu are utging and sciable, while at ther times yu are shy and reserved” wh wuld nt agree with that statement?
S, keep in mind that we are nt immune t the Barnum effect. Take everything yu hear with several grains f salt.
8. What is the purpse f Paragraph 2?
A. T present a cntrversial pinin.B. T prvide an example f an idea.
C. T ffer a slutin t a prblem.D. T define the meaning f a term.
9. What is Paragraph 4 mainly abut?
A. Ptential applicatin f the Barnum effect.B. Further explanatin f the Barnum effect.
C. Supprting evidence fr the Barnum effect.D. A reasnable dubt f the research prcess.
10. Why d s many peple believe the statements in hrscpe and persnality tests?
A. They are s specific.B. They are unclear.
C. They are psitive.D. They are believable.
11. Hw is the passage rganized?
A. Phenmenn—analysis.B. Cause—effect.
C. Prblem—slutin.D. Claim—cunterclaim.
D
The rise f the rbts has raised the pssibility f a future where there is simply less wk fr humans t d. T tired ffice wrkers, a wrld where we all have a bit mre leisure time sunds rather nice. Yet what really matters is hw wrk will be distributed acrss the wrkfrce.
The recent past shws there is n reasn t believe it will be evenly (均衡地) spread. The length f the average wrking week in the UK has declined steadily frm abut 59 hurs in the mid-19th century t 32 hurs in 2009. But averages hide a lt.
While trends amng wmen have been stable, there have been big shifts amng men. Males in well-paid full-time emplyment are nw wrking slightly lnger hurs n average than tw decades ag. Meanwhile, men in full-time emplyment at the bttm f the wage ladder are wrking much less.
On tp f that, the number f lw-paid men wh wrk part-time has increased sharply. Twenty years ag, ne in 20 men with lw hurly wages wrked part-time; tday it is ne in five. Analysis by the Institute fr Fiscal Studies shws this phenmenn is nly happening amng the lw-paid. In better-paying jbs, part-time men are still fairly rare. Gender rles within families might tend t be similar t. Lw-paid men may be chsing t shulder mre childcare respnsibilities s their partners can return t wrk.
Yet it is clear that the distributin f wrk will matter t peple. Britain has bth veremplyment and underemplyment prblems: fficial data shw 3.4m peple in Britain want t wrk mre hurs while 3.2m want t wrk few hurs fr less pay. The underemplyed are likely t be waiters r cleaners. The veremplyed are mst likely t be dctrs r chief executives. This indicates an ecnmy where demand and supply f skills are ut f sync.
Nbdy knws fr sure hw the next wave f autmatin will shake up demand fr different skills. Perhaps dctrs will gain the free time they desire. Others might find themselves in greater demand. But shrt f us develping a much better system fr training peple quickly fr the jbs ecnmy needs, it seems likely that in the future—as nw—there will be t much wrk fr sme, and t little fr thers.
12. What can be inferred frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. The develpment f rbts will get rid f humans’ wrk.
B. Future leisure time will be allcated evenly acrss the wrkfrce.
C. UK has taken sme measures t stp the decline f wrking hurs.
D. The averages may nt be the accurate indicatrs f the steady decline f wrking hurs.
13. What can we learn frm the analysis by Institute fr Fiscal Studies?
A. Lw-paid men are t blame fr the lw emplyment.
B. Mre well-paid men are chsing t wrk part-time.
C. Part-time men have increased nly amng the lw-paid.
D. Part-time men rarely shulder childcare respnsibilities.
14. What d the underlined wrds “ut f sync” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Imprtant.B. Imbalanced.C. Undubted.D. Harmful.
15. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The ttal amunt f human labr will be decreased.
B. Better training systems will be built acrss the wrld.
C. Rbts cntribute t uneven distributin acrss the wrkfrce.
D. The number f lw-paid men wh wrk part-time has increased.

I insisted and gt the grup t agree t the plan, althugh smewhat reluctantly.
My pinball wizard didn’t stretch ut his hand, but hw many times have we run acrss thse payment screens that suggest a 20% tip fr being handed a sandwich we rdered? 17 There is data t back up the trend: 66% f American adults have a negative view f tipping, and 32% say they’re sick f thse payment-screen hints, accrding t a recent Bankrate survey.
18 I admit there are times I suspect the tipping thing has gne t far - say, when I’m at a self-checkut line and there’s still request t leave smething extra. But I’m generally willing t err n the side f cautin: If smene is expecting a tip, I’ll assume they have financial reasns t d s. 19

F. One dllar r tw wn’t make r break me, but it can pssibly help with their rent.

Cannt be cmbined with insurance fees r ther cupns. New patients nly.(截止日期:03/31/24。不能与保险费或其他优惠券合并使用。仅限新患者)”可知,优惠券只有新患者才能使用它。故选C项。
2. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Additinally, dental implants can help t prevent bne deteriratin(退化)that is caused by missing teeth. The bne begins t deterirate when yu lse a tth because it is n lnger being stimulated daily. This can lead t severe bne lss ver time. But by placing dental implants int the jawbne, we can preserve this structure.(此外,种植牙可以帮助防止因缺牙而导致的骨质退化。当你失去一颗牙齿时,骨头就开始恶化,因为它不再每天受到刺激。随着时间的推移,这会导致严重的骨质流失。但是通过在颌骨中植入牙齿,我们可以保留这种结构)”可知,种植牙的优点是保存了颌骨。故选B项。
3. 推理判断题。根据本文标题“WELCOME TO DENTAL 2023 IMPLANT CENTERGRAND OPENING!!VISIT OUR NEW LOCATION(欢迎来到牙科2023种植中心.隆重开幕! !参观我们的新地点)”以及最后一段“If yu’re missing ne, tw, r all f yur teeth, we encurage yu t visit ur new ffice in Lng Beach, r call(949)857-6757 t schedule yur appintment. We wuld be happy t help yu find the best treatment plan t restre yur smile and help yu enjy better ral health sn!(如果你缺了一颗、两颗或所有的牙齿,我们建议你去我们在长滩的新办公室,或者打电话(949)857-6757预约你的预约。我们很乐意帮助您找到最好的治疗方案,恢复您的笑容,让您早日享受更好的口腔健康!)”可推知,本文的目的是为一家新开的牙科中心做广告。故选C项。
4. A 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第一段中的“Cming int the freshman year at Paul Cllege, Sansa was cncerned abut her ability as an individual t make an impact n such a large cmmunity, fr it was never hard fr her t stand ut frm peers in high schl. (刚进入保罗学院的一年级,Sansa就开始担心自己是否有能力在这么大的一个社区里产生影响,因为对她来说,从高中同学中脱颖而出并不难)”可以推出,Sansa在高中时期的表现是非常突出的。故选A。
根据第二段中的“Each team had t create a unique prduct that tackled ne f the five fllwing real-wrld prblems: “Water is Life”, “Fd”, “Threats frm Cyberspace”, “Medical Breakthrughs”, and “Addictive Sciety”. (每个团队必须创造一个独特的产品,解决以下五个现实世界问题中的一个:“水是生命”、“食物”、“网络空间威胁”、“医学突破”和“成瘾社会”)”可得知,每支参赛队伍都需呈现一个产品来解决某个实际问题。故选B。
6. 词义猜测题。根据第三段的第二句话“They earned a spt in the final rund f the cnference, where they cmpeted against the tp team frm each f the ther Grand Challenge grups. (他们在决赛获得了一席之地,在那里他们与其他各组的顶级球队竞争)”可以得知,Sansa所在的团队挺进了决赛,在决赛中他们需要和其他队伍进行比拼。由此猜测,划线部分“cmpeted against”是“vie with”的同义复现,即“和……竞争”。A. Cntest against. 和……竞争;B. Give way t. 向……让步;C. Break up with. Make up with.和……和解。故选A。
根据第一段最后一句“She was able t frge invaluable cnnectins with her fellw students and their peer advisr wh had s much first-hand experience with what they all were ging thrugh. (她能够与她的同学和他们的同行顾问建立宝贵的联系,他们对他们所经历的事情有很多第一手的经验)”和最后一段“If it hadn’t been fr her grup’s determinatin, excellent teamwrk and their awesme peer advisr Hayley, they wuld nt have been able t accmplish everything they did. (如果没有她的团队的决心、出色的团队合作和他们出色的同行顾问Hayley,他们不可能完成他们所做的一切)”可知,Sansa强调和团队之间的关系,所以她在 FIRE Prgram中最大的收获是良好的团队关系。故选C。
8. D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据文章第二段“We discvered that we’ve all been falling victim t the Barnum effect.
Well, late psychlgy prfessr Bertram Frer ffered sme prf. (不相信我们?嗯,已故的心理学教授Bertram Frer提供了一些证据)”和第四段“In a histric study, Frer cnducted a persnality test t his students.
根据文章第二段中“We discvered that we’ve all been falling victim t the Barnum effect. The Barnum Effect is the phenmenn that ccurs when individuals believe that persnality descriptins apply specifically t them, despite the fact that the descriptin is actually filled with infrmatin that applies t everyne. (我们发现我们都成了巴纳姆效应的受害者。巴纳姆效应是一种现象,当人们认为性格描述只适用于他们时,尽管事实上这些描述中充满了适用于所有人的信息)”以及倒数第二段“One f the mst imprtant factrs when reprducing this study is t keep the statements as vague as pssible, with a mix f mstly psitive and sme negative cntent. (在复制这项研究时,最重要的因素之一是让陈述尽可能模糊,主要是积极的内容和一些消极的内容)”可推知,很多人相信占卜和性格描述,是因为这些描述中充满了适用于所有人的信息,也就是说这些描述其实是很模棱两可的。故选B项。
11. 推理判断题。阅读文章可知,文章第一段“Have yu ever taken a persnality test and fund the results t be scarily accurate, checked yur hrscpe and had everything cme true r taken an nline quiz that tld yu precisely what yur favrite Disney princess means abut yu?
