A hearing aid is a tiny electrnic device yu put in r behind yur ear t make sunds luder. A hearing aid has three basic parts: a micrphne, an amplifier and a speaker. The hearing aid receives sund thrugh a micrphne, which changes the sund waves t electrical signals and sends them t an amplifier. The amplifier increases the pwer f the signals and sends them t the ear thrugh a speaker. There are three styles f hearing aids.
· Behind-the-ear (BTE) aids are used by peple f all ages. “Mini” BTE is a new kind. These small and pen-fit aids fit behind the ear cmpletely, with a narrw tube int the ear canal, enabling the canal t remain pen. Thus, sme peple prefer it because their wn vice des nt sund “plugged up"
· In-the-ear (ITE) aids fit cmpletely inside the uter ear. Sme ITE aids may have added features, such as a telecil that allws users t receive sund thrugh the circuitry f the hearing aid, rather than thrugh its micrphne.
· Canal aids fit int the ear canal and are available in tw styles. In-the-canal (ITC) aids are made t fit the size and shape f the ear canal. Cmpletely-in-canal (CIC) aids are hidden in the ear canal.
The hearing aid that will wrk best fr yu depends n yur hearing needs and lifestyle. Price is als a key cnsideratin. D humans have the ability t understand what animals are saying, r are we just barking up the wrng tree?
“Artificial intelligence (AI) hlds the key t unlcking the fascinating insights. Beynd creating chatbts that charm peple, machine learning may sn make it pssible t decde(解码) animal calls,” says Raskin, c-funder f the nnprfit Earth Species Prject. It's develping AI mdels that imitate a variety f species, aiming t have “cnversatins” with animals. Its team is cllecting diverse data frm varius species and building machine-learning mdels fr analysis. Prject CETI(鲸类动物翻译计划)fcuses n understanding a particular species, in this case the sperm whale.
Sperm whales have cmplex scial grups. When a familiar yung male rejined his family, researchers seized the chance t recrd their sunds. Fr tw decades, scientists dcumented tw sperm whale grups, capturing their clicking sunds. After manually decding sme sunds, they turned t AI fr faster translatin. Using a neural(神经的) netwrk, the team trained it t discern individual whales frm a subset f sunds. Next, their ambitius gal is t train a cmputer t speak whale.
As tech advances, the dr has been pened t using machine learning t decde unfamiliar languages. It's fund that AI tls have practical value beynd research. Translating animal sunds aids endangered species. Scientists study caged birds' calls t grasp sund changes, explaining difficulties in reintrductin. Machine learning decdes pets' signals like barks and facial expressins. Raskin's AI mdel translates dgs' expressins, revealing their surprising capabilities t wners. Additinally, it helps predict pig emtins based n their sunds, enhancing animal welfare. Advancements deepen ur understanding f animals.
Nw enthusiastic scientists are cmmitted t pen-surce data and mdel sharing. “Every time yu invent a technlgy, yu als invent a respnsibility,” Raskin says. “Designing a ‘whale chatbt’ demands we imagine an animal's experience. The true value f any language is that it helps us relate t thers.”
28. What is the purpse f the Earth Species Prject?
A. T gather vast data with a cmputer. B. T create chatbts that imitate animals.
C. T understand animal languages using AI. D. T study the scial behavir f sperm whales.
29. What des the underlined wrd “discern” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Train. B. Prtect. C. Recrd. D. Recgnize.
30. Hw d AI tls prvide practical value in deepening ur insights int animals?
A. By reintrducing endangered species. B. By advancing animal well-being
C. By translating animals' calls and lks. D. By studying animals' negative emtins.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Lst in Translatin? Nt with AI B. A Future f Chatting with Animals
C. Whales SOS: Human-AI Unite fr Miracles D. Practical Value f Machine Learning Mdels

Many rbts track bjects by “sight” as they wrk with them, but ptical(光学的) sensrs can't take in an item's entire shape when it's in the dark r partially blcked frm view. Nw a new lw-cst technique lets a rbtic hand “feel” an unfamiliar bject's frm-and skillfully handle it based n this infrmatin alne.
University f Califrnia, San Dieg, rbticist Xialng Wang and his team wanted t find ut whether cmplex actins culd be achieved in rbtics using nly simple tuch data.
The researchers attached 16 cntact sensrs, each csting abut $12, t the palm and fingers f a fur-fingered rbt hand. These sensrs simply indicate if an bject is tuching the hand r nt. “While ne sensr desn't catch much, a lt f them can help yu capture different aspects f the bject,” Wang says. In this case, the rbt's task was t rtate (旋转) items placed in its palm.
They first ran simulatins (模拟) t cllect enugh tuch data as a virtual rbt hand practiced rtating bjects, including balls and ther irregular bjects. Using infrmatin frm each sensr, the team built a cmputer mdel that determines an bject's psitin at every step f the handling prcess and mves the fingers t rtate it smthly and stably.
Next they transferred this capability t perate a real rbt hand, which successfully cntrl previusly unfamiliar bjects such as apples, tmates, sup cans and rubber ducks. Transferring the cmputer mdel t the real wrld was relatively easy because the sensr data were s simple. Hwever, New Yrk University's Lerrel Pint, wh studies rbts' interactins, wnders whether the system wuld fail at mre cmplicated tasks.
S in future wrk, Wang's grup aims t tackle mre cmplex mvements as well as t add sensrs in places such as the sides f the fingers. “This means that there will be mre accurate infrmatin frm tuching that allws recnstructing the bject shape,” Wang says. The researchers will als try adding visin t cmplement tuch data fr handling cmplicated shape.
32. What was the intentin f the research cnducted by Xialng Wang's grup?
A. T develp a rbt with advanced ptical sensrs
B. T create a rbtic hand t grasp familiar bjects
C. T investigate the impact f lighting n rbtic recgnitin.
D. T explre the use f tuch data in cmplex rbtic actins
33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. The way that rbt hands capture different bjects
B. The functin f rbt hands in Wang's research
C. The wrking principle f rbt hands in Wang's research.
D. The type f cntact sensrs attached t the rbt hand.
34. Hw did the researchers gather tuch data fr the rbtic hand's training?
A. They used real-wrld bjects. B. They used cmplex ptical sensrs.
C. They relied n visin-based technlgy. D. They cnducted simulatins with the rbt hand
35. What is XiaLng Wang's attitude twards Pint's cncern ver the system?
A. Psitive B. Dubtful C. Unclear D. Dismissive
