Sme time ag, in my class I was abut t fail a student fr his answer t a physics questin when the student claimed he deserved a better scre. The examinatin questin sunded “safe”, “Shw hw it is pssible t determine the height f a tall building with the aid f a barmeter (气压表).” The student had answered, “Take the barmeter t the tp f the building, attach a lng rpe t it, lwer the barmeter t the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length f the rpe. The musical instruments used were almst entirely made by an American ice artist, Tim Linhart. Since he created his first musical instrument ut f ice mre than a decade ag, he has already carved varius ice instruments, including vilins, vilas, timber drum sets, xylphne, duble bass, mandlin and cell. He als created his wn large wind instrument, which uses the vibratin f an ice tube t prduce sund when the air flws thrugh.
Linhart makes the different parts f the ice instrument and then uses a liquid mixed with snw t glue them tgether, with a metal supprt placed where the strings need t be. A vilin can usually be made in tw r three weeks, while larger instruments can take mre time and effrts, smetimes taking mnths t make.
An ice instrument has a clearer sund than a wden instrument. Hwever, ice instruments are mre easily brken r damaged than rdinary instruments. The temperature in the ice theater changes depending n the number f peple in the audience. This als changes the temperature f the ice instruments, which in turn affects the 1 sund they prduce. Musicians need t tune their instruments frequently during perfrmances.
Althugh playing an ice instrument is nt easy, Linhart believes that ice and snw are gd materials fr making instruments. The nly dwnside is melting when the temperature is abve freezing.

But a new study cnducted by researchers in the US and Canada suggests nt all f the nearly 2,000 species f grund beetles fund in Nrth America will survive climate change. By studying the data n 136 different grund beetle species acrss cntinental Nrth America, Puert Ric and Hawaii, the researchers fund that a species’ chance f success in a changing climate depends n several imprtant factrs, such as its habitat preference, bdy size, and whether it flies, climbs r runs.
“We fund that less mbile, nnflying grund beetles, which are critical pest cntrl agents, are mre likely t fall ver time in a warmer, dryer climate,” said Tng Qiu, wh led the study. “That means yu’re ging t have mre pests that can influence agricultural and frest ecsystems.” But there is reasn fr hpe, Qiu added, because the analysis als shwed that habitat cnservatin can lessen these effects and imprve the situatin in sme areas.
“We hpe cnservatin bilgists will use this infrmatin and the nline map that we created t better manage habitats fr insects in general. Grund beetles are very beneficial t ecsystems, but peple pay little attentin t them. In this paper we’re shwing the brad influence they have n whle cmmunities in frested and agricultural ecsystems,” said Qiu.
The researchers used grund beetle cunt data frm the Natinal Science Fundatin’s Natinal Eclgical Observatry Netwrk (NEON) and frm 11 early published studies t measure and map the beetles’ distributin(分布) acrss Nrth America. Habitat infrmatin, such as the lcatin f gaps in frest canpies and the density f plants n a frest flr, was acquired by using NEON’s imaging technlgy t create detailed three-dimensinal images f landscapes.
