When ancient Egyptians put pen t paper—r, mre accurately, ink t papyrus (纸莎草纸) —they tk steps t ensure that their wrds wuld last frever, a new study suggests. Researchers frm the University f Cpenhagen have fund that ancient scribes (抄写员) likely added lead t their inks t help their writing dry. Mre than 1,000 years later, reprts Csms Magazine, 15th-century Eurpean artists emplyed lead as well. Accrding t the Lndn Natinal Gallery, lead-based pigments fund in many Old Master paintings are “knwn t aid the drying f paint films.”
t a statement frm the University f Cpenhagen, the study’s authrs analyzed 12 papyrus pieces dating back t between 100 and 200 C.E., when Egypt was under Rman cntrl. The team used X-ray micrscpe t determine the raw materials used in different inks, as well as the chemical structure f the dried ink attached t the ancient paper. Ancient Egyptians began writing with ink—made by burning wd r il and mixing the resulting material with water—arund 3200 B.C. Typically, scribes used black, carbn-based ink fr the bdy f text and reserved red ink fr headings and ther key wrds in the text. Thugh black and red inks were mst cmmn, shades f blue, green, white and yellw als appeared in ancient texts.
The researchers write that the Egyptians created red inks with irn-based cmbinatins—mst likely natural earth pigments. The team als identified the presence f lead. They were bwled ver that there was n lead white r ther cmbinatins that wuld typically be present in a lead-based pigment. Instead, the ancient ink’s lead pigments appeared t wrap arund the papyrus cell walls and irn particles (微粒). The resulting effect lked “as if the letters were utlined” in lead. This finding indicates that the ancient Egyptians invented a system f adding lead t red and black inks specifically fr the purpse f sticking the wrds t paper.
The 12 analyzed papyrus pieces are part f the University f Cpenhagen’s Papyrus Carlsberg Cllectin. The dcuments riginated in Tebtunis, the nly large-scale institutinal library knwn t have survived frm ancient Egyptian times.
    28. What is the main functin f lead in the masterpieces f the ancients?
    A. T make the clrs brighter.B. T stick the ink t the pen.
    C. T help the writing dry.D. T increase their thickness.
    29. What can be inferred frm the statement?
    A. It was easy fr X-ray micrscpe t detect the raw materials.
    B. Only wet inks can be used t determine their chemical cmpnents.
    C. Ancient Egyptians already knew black culd catch eyes easily.
    D. The inks used by the ancient Egyptians came in a variety f clrs.
    30. What d the underlined wrds mean?
    A. Amazed.B. Cncerned.C. Angry.D. Wrried.
    31. Hw did the ancient Egyptians make wrds stay n paper fr a lng time accrding t Paragraph 3?
    A. By cmbining several kinds f clrs.
    B. By adding lead t red and black inks.
    C. By breaking the structure f the clrs.
    D. By analyzing the elements f the paper.
    D
A recent study has fund that using wd fr cnstructin instead f cncrete and steel can reduce emissins. But Tim Searchinger at Princetn University says many f these studies are based n the false fundatin that harvesting wd is carbn neutral (碳中和). “Only a small percentage f the wd gets int a timber (木料) prduct, and a part f that gets int a timber prduct that can replace cncrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different cuntries, but large amunts f a harvested tree are left t be divided int parts, used in shrt-lived prducts like paper r burned fr energy, all f which generate emissins.
In a reprt fr the Wrld Resurces Institute, Searchinger and his clleagues have mdelled hw using mre wd fr cnstructin wuld affect emissins between 2010 and 2050, accunting fr the emissins frm harvesting the wd. They cnsidered varius types f frests and parts f wd ging twards cnstructin. They als factred in the emissins savings frm replacing cncrete and steel.
Under sme circumstances, the researchers fund significant emissins reductins. But each case required what they cnsidered an unrealistically high prtin f the wd ging twards cnstructin, as well as rapid grwth nly seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they fund a large increase in glbal demand fr wd wuld prbably lead t rising emissins fr decades. Accunting fr emissins in this way, the researchers reprted in a related paper that increasing frest harvests between 2010 and 2050 wuld add emissins equal t rughly 10 percent f ttal annual emissins.
Ali Amiri at Aalt University in Finland says the reprt’s cnclusins abut emissins frm rising demand are prbably crrect, but the stry is different fr wd we already harvest. “Bsting the efficiency f current harvests and using mre wd fr lnger lived purpses than paper wuld cut emissins,” he says. “We cannt just say we shuld stp using wd.”
32.What is wrng with previus researches accrding t Searchinger?
A.They gt wrng statistics.B.They used an incrrect cncept.
C.They included t many factrs.D.They were applied in limited cuntries.
33.What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
A.The prcess f the new research.B.The backgrund f the new study.
C.The challenge f the new research.D.The achievements f the new study.
34.When will the emissins drp ff greatly accrding t the new study?
    A.When wd grws slwly.
B.When wd is used t make paper.
C.When wd is used t build a huse.
D.When wd is harvested in cuntries like Brazil.
35.What is Ali Amiri’s attitude tward the new result?
    A.Favrable. B.Dubtful. C.Critical. D.Objective.
