This childhd experience had gnawed (折腾) at the back f her mind, pushing her t d smething t ease the lives f fellw left-handers. In September 2018, she started The Left Out Stre, which makes everyday prducts ranging frm left-handed writing tls and scissrs t kitchen tls fr left-handed peple.
Starting The Left Out Stre wasn’t in the cards fr Maitri fr a very lng time. The idea fr The Left Out Stre came t Maitri in just 20 minutes during a festival at St. Jseph’s Institute f Management, where she was a pst-graduate student. She presented the rugh idea t judges wh later became spnsrs, and they enthusiastically supprted it. This encuragement gave her the push t make it a market research prject t test the waters and explre the ptential market.
Initially, Maitri faced a few hiccups. It tk her quite sme time t find vendrs (小贩) and make them understand hw t make the prducts. With everything in place, Maitri went thrugh a tugh time reaching custmers. The first time she made a prper sale was at an exhibitin at Lalit Ashk. “Peple were surprised at first, but gradually mre left-handed peple began appraching me, and said they relate t my struggles.” Since then, she has been regularly marketing her prducts at exhibitins, and keeps The Left Out Stre active n scial media.

We’ve all dne it befre---drpped a bx f unwanted husehld belngings at a flea market and driven ff with a sense f accmplishment. But have yu ever stpped t think abut where thse items actually g?
Business jurnalist Adam Minter began cnsidering this while cleaning ut his late mther’s hme. Seeking reassurance that his mther’s dnated items wuld be put t gd use rather than destryed, he started a jurney wrldwide that resulted in his latest bk, “Secndhand: ‘Travels in the New Glbal Garage Sale”. He fund the industry significantly in the dark, with a disturbing lack f data n secndhand gds, despite their crucial rle in clthing, furnishing and educating peple wrldwide.
In this bk, Minter fully reveals himself as an investigative jurnalist. He desn’t shy away frm the cmmnly-accepted assumptins abut the glbal trade in used gds. First, Minter questins the idea that shipments f secndhand clthes frm develped cuntries t Africa have destryed lcal textile industries (纺织业). That’s verly simplistic, he says. He further explains that multiple factrs, such as declining cttn prductin in lcal areas and ecnmic liberatin, have influenced the situatin.
Minter then explres the tpic f car seats, making a statement that recycling car seats, instead f selling them secndhand, is wasteful and might cmprmise (危害) safety fr children in develping cuntries. It is disturbing t say s in a sciety that priritizes child safety and highlights zer risk, but when yu cnsider the excessive cautin that might endanger children’s lives elsewhere, the situatin starts t lk different.
Minter calls it “waste clnialism,” this idea that develped cuntries can apply their wn safety standards nt the markets f develping cuntries-and it’s deeply wrng. Why label a used car seat r an ld TV as unsafe if smene else, with different skills, is perfectly capable f repairing it and willing t use it, especially if they lack access t new prducts and ther ptins?
The bk explres the huge prblems f handling surplus (剩余的) items and hw prducers discurage repairs and prmte the sales f new prducts. Minter calls fr initiatives t enhance prduct repairability and increase prduct lifetime.
28. Why des Minter set ut n a jurney wrldwide?
A. T remember his late mther. B. T explre where used items end up.
C. T cllect data fr fashin industries. D. T advcate recycling f used gds.

A. grundless B. ne-sidedC. cnventinal D. self-cntradictry
30. Which actin taken by develped cuntries might Minter describe as “waste clnialism”?
A. Selling ld TV sets t develping cuntries.
B. Denying access t used car seats dmestically.
C. Banning used gds exprt t develping cuntries.
D. Priritizing safety in new gds fr develping cuntries.
31. What des Minter encurage prducers t d in his bk?
A. Handle used items efficientlyB. Prmte sales f new prducts.
C. Make mre sustainable prducts. D. Take the initiative t bst prductin.

It seems like just anther grup f nn-player characters (NPCs) in a vide game. But unlike traditinal NPCs, these characters’ behavir isn’t prgrammed by a cder (程序员). Instead, they generate their behavir accrding t a shrt bigraphy given t them cnsisting f a name, age, jb, family, interests, and a few habits. What is surprising? They behave in ways that are believably humanlike.
In the experiment, a team f Stanfrd researchers led by Jn Sung Park placed 25 generative agents within a virtual wrld. Each agent was assigned a unique backgrund and participated in a tw-day simulatin (模拟). Varius remarkable behavirs were. then bserved. Fr example, ne agent planned a party and infrmed friends and relatives, many f whm shwed up at the crrect time and place; anther agent wh decided t run fr president set ff heated discussins amng the cmmunity, with different agents hlding varying pinins n this candidate.
The researchers used a cntrl grup f human participants, each rle-playing ne f the 25 agents, and were astnished by the result: actual humans generated respnses that an evaluatin grup f 100 individuals rated as less human-like than the generative agents.
The study has inspired interest amng game designers wh hpe generative agents will make game play mre engaging. But Park is mst interested in ther dwnstream applicatins, including generative agents’ ptential usefulness fr scial science studies. “Fr example, researchers culd explre hw peple in an nline frum are likely t respnd t a particular measure aimed at cuntering false infrmatin, “Park envisins.
Hwever, Park acknwledges that generative agents als raise sme ptential ethical (伦理的) prblems. One highlighted risk is that peple will develp ne-sided “fake friendships” with humanlike generative agents at the expense f relatinships in real life. The researchers described the ethical cncerns with sme prpsed slutins. “It’s always better t ver-wrry abut ethical prblems at the beginning rather than underestimate their significance and regret it later,” Park says.
32. Hw d the generative agents in the study differ frm traditinal NPCs in vide games?
A. They can write bigraphies. B. They are cntrlled by cders.
C. They behave in humanlike ways. D. They have unique cultural backgrunds
33. Which f the fllwing steps is taken in the experiment?
A. Having peple rate the generated behavir.
B. Managing the human rle-players’ respnse
C. Evaluating the 100 individuals’ generated respnse.
D. Making the characters imitate the human participants.
34. Accrding t Park, what culd be a ptential use f generative agents?
A. Enhancing nline frum engagement. B. Making technlgical breakthrughs
C. Designing mre absrbing vide games. D. Predicting human actins in a scial cntext.
35. What is Park’s recmmended apprach t the ethical issues raised by generative agents?
A. Discunt their significance. B. Address cncerns instantly.
C. Be deeply wrried thrughut. D. Pstpne slutins t a later time.

Standing n a hill at Cliveden Gardens n a sunny winter day, its dark-green lake surrunded by centuries-ld trees tk my breath away. 36 It’s just a lcal park near Lndn that I’d never heard f during my eight years living in the UK. Text 10:
M: Selling yur things nline helps yu get rid f thse yu dn’t need, and it can als be a great surce f incme. One thing yu need t cnsider carefully is the platfrm n which yu are ging t advertise. Mst big platfrms in the field are s ppular with sellers, nt just because they can give yu access t a bigger pl f ptential custmers, but als because they ffer insurance, bth t the seller and the buyer. The disadvantage, hwever, is that yu will need t pay sme mney fr using the platfrm. Yu can use sme platfrms that either charge a smaller fee fr advertising r even n fee at all-but, in that case, what yu will need t keep in mind is yur safety, especially if the value f the prduct yu’re selling is high. It’s always best t meet the buyer during the day at a public place such as a cffee shp, a library, r a supermarket parking lt anywhere mnitred by security cameras is gd. A few mre things t keep in mind: always be accurate with yur descriptins f the things yu are selling. The last thing yu want is t be accused f cheating and banned frm the website. Mrever, be careful with yur persnal infrmatin: d nt give away yur full name, hme address r cell phne number unless yu have t, and have a separate e-mail address fr selling nline. Remember that a smart, prepared seller is a happy seller.
