Fr many peple, catching a smell f freshly cut grass is a pleasant sign that warmer weather is here t stay. Fr the grass, hwever, this scent signals an entirely different stry.
The smell we assciate with freshly cut grass is actually a chemical SOS, ne used by plants t beg nearby creatures t save them frm attack. After all, when danger strikes —whether it's gardening equipment r a hungry caterpillar — plants can't lift their rts and run. They must fight where they stand. T prtect themselves, plants emply a string f mlecular (分子) respnses. These chemical cmmunicatins can be used t pisn an enemy, warn surrunding plants f dangers r attract helpful insects t perfrm needed services.
Clearly, plants can cmmunicate. But des that mean they can feel pain? Accrding t sme researchers, plants release gases that are the equivalent f crying ut in pain. Using a laser-pwered micrphne, researchers have picked up sund waves prduced by plants releasing gases when cut r injured. Althugh nt audible t the human ear, the secret vices f plants have revealed that cucumbers scream when they are sick, and flwers cry when their leaves are cut.
There's als evidence that plants can hear themselves being eaten. Researches shw that plants understand and respnd t chewing sunds made by caterpillars dining n them. As sn as the plants hear the nises, they respnd with several defense mechanisms.
Fr sme researchers, evidence f these cmplex cmmunicatin systems — giving ut nises via gas when in pain — signals that plants feel pain. Others argue that there cannt be pain withut a brain t register the feeling. Still mre scientists infer that plants can exhibit intelligent behavir withut pssessing a brain r cnscius awareness.
As they grw, plants can change their paths t avid bstacles r reach fr supprt with their tendrils (卷须). This activity cmes frm a cmplex bilgical netwrk distributed thrugh the plants' rts, leaves and stems. This netwrk helps plants reprduce, grw and survive.

Handwritten Chinese characters (文字) can be beautiful. I still remember lking at Chinese and nt understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strng attractin. In fact, sme students start learning Chinese because f the characters. After having studied Chinese fr a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese takes a very lng time t learn.
Living as we d in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphnes and cmputers, mst students sner r later ask themselves this questin: Is it really necessary t learn hw t write by hand in Chinese? When using smartphnes r cmputers, we can use phnetic input (语音输入) systems, which chse the characters we want fr us as lng as we can remember hw they are prnunced. Since we enter different characters, we seldm need t be able t recgnize the difference between characters in detail; the cmputer makes the right chices fr us. D we really need t write Chinese by hand at all?
I think mst peple agree that yu shuld learn t write at least sme characters at sme pint as a student f Chinese, althugh nt necessarily straight away and nt necessarily all the characters that yu can say. But unless yu dn’t care abut written language at all, yu shuld learn the basics f handwriting. Withut it, it will be very hard t understand characters. Yu dn’t need t be a calligraphy master (书法大师), but yu d need basic handwriting skills t d this. Simply lking at things is, as usual, a bad way f learning.
I think learning the mst cmmn 500 characters r s is a gd idea fr all students. If yu actually want t write by hand, increase that t 1, 000. Then learn t handwrite characters utside f the 1, 000 mst cmmn n a need-t-knw basis.

A. They are less cmmunicative than English wrds.
B. They attract sme freigners t learn Chinese.
C. They shw the greatness f Chinese culture.
D. They are nt really that difficult.

B. Peple believe learning t write characters is imprtant.
C. Peple dubt the necessity f learning t write characters.
D. Characters may disappear with the develpment f sciety.
14.What des the underlined wrd “this” in Paragraph 3 refer t?
A. Understanding characters.
B. Being a calligraphy master.
C. Keeping a gd learning habit.
D. Learning basic handwriting skills.
15.What’s the authr’s attitude t learning t write characters in the digital age?
A. Uncaring.B. Wrried.
C. Supprtive.D. Surprised.

I, as a mther, was tired frm the anger and her inability t cmmunicate because f her slwed language develpment.(我花了一晚上的时间照顾三岁的女儿,第二天早上,我迫不及待地送她去上学。 故选A项。
根据划线词所在句子“I returned that afternn as disenchanted with my little girl as when I left.(当天下午我回到学校接她时的心情和送她上学离开时一样‘disenchanted’) ”可知,作者下午的心情和早上的心情一样。结合第二段首句“As I accmpanied her int the car, I felt desperate.(当我陪她上车时,我感到绝望)”可知,作者早上送孩子离开时感到绝望无助。
根据第三段“His breathy wrds were supprted by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. ‘See that climber.’ He pinted t a wden piece f playgrund equipment that lked like a rck wall. I ndded. ‘Well, every day since she started schl, she’s tried and failed t make it t the tp.’ He tk a breath. ‘And tday she did it!’(他很兴奋地气喘吁吁地说的这些话。我没有打断他。‘看那个攀登架。’他指着一块木制的操场设备,看起来像一堵石墙。我点了点头。‘嗯,自从她上学以来,她每天都在努力,但都失败了。’ 他吸了一口气。‘今天她成功了!’)”可知,老师感到兴奋是因为作者的女儿终于成功爬上了木制设备。故选D项。
7.答案: B
解析:推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“We encurage yu t click these brief accunts and invite yu t share yur wn stry.(我们鼓励您点击这些简短的叙述,并邀请您分享自己的故事)”中“click(点击)”可推知这篇文章来自网络。故选B项。
根据第二段中“The smell we assciate with freshly cut grass is actually a chemical SOS, ne used by plants t beg nearby creatures t save them frm attack.(我们联想到的新割的草的气味实际上是一种化学物质SOS,植物用这种气味乞求附近的生物,使它们免受攻击)”可知,新割的草的气味是草的呼救声。故选C。
9.答案: A
根据第三段的“Accrding t sme researchers, plants release gases that are the equivalent f crying ut in pain. (据一些研究人员称,植物释放的气体相当于疼痛时的哭泣)”可知,植物表达它们的疼痛是通过释放气体。故选A。
根据最后一段的“ This activity cmes frm a cmplex bilgical netwrk distributed thrugh the plants' rts, leaves and stems. This netwrk helps plants reprduce, grw and survive.(这种活动来自分布在植物根、叶和茎的复杂的生物网络。这个网络帮助植物繁殖、生长和生存)”可知,让植物的智能行为成为可能的是分布在植物根、叶和茎的复杂的生物网络。故选B。
11.答案: A
根据第三段的“Clearly, plants can cmmunicate. But des that mean they can feel pain? Accrding t sme researchers, plants release gases that are the equivalent f crying ut in pain. (很明显,植物是可以交流的。但这是否意味着它们能感觉到疼痛呢?据一些研究人员称,植物释放的气体相当于疼痛时的哭泣)”以及再结合整篇文章的主旨大意可知,整篇文章一直在围绕植物是否能感受到疼痛而展开。故选A。
根据第一段“Handwritten Chinese characters (文字) can be beautiful. I still remember lking at Chinese and nt understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strng attractin. In fact, sme students start learning Chinese because f the characters.(手写的汉字很漂亮。我还记得我曾经看着汉语,虽不懂是什么意思,但却感受到强烈的吸引力。事实上,一些学生开始学习中文是因为汉字)”可推测,作者提到的开始学中文的这些学生应该是外国学生,他们感受到了中国文字的吸引力,即汉字吸引了一些外国人学习汉语。故选B项。
13.答案: C
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段“Living as we d in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphnes and cmputers, mst students sner r later ask themselves this questin: Is it really necessary t learn hw t write by hand in Chinese? When using smartphnes r cmputers, we can use phnetic input (语音输入) systems, which chse the characters we want fr us as lng as we can remember hw they are prnunced.(我们生活在一个拥有智能手机和电脑的数字时代,大多数学生迟早会问自己这个问题:学习手写中文真的有必要吗? 当使用智能手机或电脑时,我们可以使用语音输入系统,只要我们能记住它们的发音,就可以为我们选择我们想要的字符)”可推测,人们认为有了智能电子产品,都可以使用语音输入,所以人们怀疑学习手写汉字的必要性。故选C项。
14.答案: A
根据第三段划线词所在句子及上文“But unless yu dn’t care abut written language at all, yu shuld learn the basics f handwriting. Withut it, it will be very hard t understand characters. Yu dn’t need t be a calligraphy master (书法大师), but yu d need basic handwriting skills t d this.(但除非你根本不在乎书面语言,否则你应该学习书写的基础知识。没有它,就很难理解文字。你不需要成为一个书法大师,但你确实需要基本的书法技巧来做到this)”可知,如果不学书写的基础知识,理解汉字是非常难的。所以需要基本的书写技巧来理解汉字,所以this指代的是上文“t understand characters”。故选A项。
根据最后一段“I think learning the mst cmmn 500 characters r s is a gd idea fr all students. If yu actually want t write by hand, increase that t 1, 000. Then learn t handwrite characters utside f the 1, 000 mst cmmn n a need-t-knw basis.(我认为学习最常见的500个字左右对所有学生来说都是一个好主意。如果你真的想手写,那就增加到1000。然后学习手写1000个最常见的字符以外的字符)”可知,作者认为数码时代学写汉字是很好的,很支持学习常用汉字的书写。故选C项。
16.答案:FCAGD
解析:①联系上文题。根据上文But yu must remember yu cannt just becme a different persn vernight when the clck strikes 12.(但你必须记住,你不可能在时钟敲响12点的时候一夜之间就变成了另一个人。) 选项F(改变是一个艰难的过程,关键字是"困难"和"过程")符合语境,故选F。
Chse a very specific gal(选择一个具体明确的目标)"可知,以及前句"They are unclear plans and desires, and are very easy t explain away due t hw unclear they are.(它们是不明确的计划和愿望,很容易被解释掉,因为它们是那么不明确。) Such gals with a certain task, are much mre dable than unclear gals.(这样带有特定任务的目标,比不明确的目标更可行。)可知,此设空处表示要设定具体的目标,与前句形成对比,与后句形成呼应,选项C(相反,设定像"每天锻炼20分钟"或"减掉15磅"这样的目标)符合语境,故选C。
根据下面对应段落中的make a very detailed plan(制定一个详细的计划)以及Having a plan and a pathway can help yu imagine yur prgress and wn't make yu impatient fr immediate results.(制定计划和路径可以帮助你想象自己的进步,也不会让你急于求成。) 选项A(制定一个相应的计划以此达到目标)符合语境,故选A。
