2.American researchers fund females are the mre talkative sex because f a special “language prtein(蛋白质)” in the brain.
The study, cnducted by neurscientists (神经学家)and psychlgist frm the University f Maryland, cncluded that wmen talked mre because they had mre f the Fxp2 prtein. The research, published in the Jurnal f Neurscience, fund that higher levels were fund amng humans that were wmen but in rats that were males. Their findings came after it was previusly claimed that ladies speak abut 20,000 wrds a day – ver 13,000 mre than men. “This study is ne f the first t reprt a sex difference in the expressin f a language-assciated prtein in humans r animals,” said Prf Margaret McCarthy, wh led the study. In their study, the researchers attempted t determine what might make male rats mre vcal than their female friends.
They separated fur-day-ld rats frm their mthers and then cunted the number f times they cried ut in the “ultrasnic range”, the frequencies higher than humans can hear, ver five minutes. While bth sexes called ut hundreds f cries, the males called ut twice as ften, they fund. But when the pups were returned t their mther’s cage, she fussed ver her sns first. Tests cnducted n the parts f the brain knwn t be assciated with vcalcalls shwed the male pups have up t twice as much Fxp2 prtein as the females. The researchers then increased the prductin in the brains f female pups and reduced it in males. This led t the female rats crying ut mre ften and their mthers shwing mre interest t them. In cntrast, males became less “talkative”.
The researchers then tested samples frm ten children, aged between three and five, which shwed that females had up t 30 per cent mre f the Fxp2 prtein than males, in a brain area key t language in humans.
“Based n ur bservatins, we assume higher levels f Fxp2 in girls and higher levels f Fxp2 in male rats is an indicatin that Fxp2 prtein levels are assciated with the mre cmmunicative sex,” said Prf McCarthy. “Our results imply Fxp2 as a cmpnent f the neurbilgical basis f sex differences in vcal cmmunicatin in mammals. “

3.I prefer Lynne Truss’s phraselgy: I am a grammar “sticker”. And, like Truss – authr f Eats, shts & Leaves – I have a “zer tlerance” apprach t grammar mistakes that make peple lk stupid.
Nw, Truss and I disagree n what it means t have “zer tlerance”. She thinks that peple wh mix up basic grammar “deserve t be struck by lightning, hacked (砍) up n the spt and buried in an unmarked grave”, while I just think they deserve t be passed ver fr a jb – even if they are therwise qualified fr the psitin.
Everyne wh applies fr a psitin at either f my cmpanies, iFixit r Dzuki, takes a cmpulsry grammar test. If jb hpefuls can’t distinguish between “t” and “t”, their applicatins g int the bin.
Of curse, we write fr a living. iFixit.cm is the wrld’s largest nline repair manual (指南), and Dzuki helps cmpanies write their wn technical dcumentatin, like paperless wrk instructins and step-by-step user manuals. S, it makes sense that we’ve made a strng strike against grammar errrs.
But grammar is relevant fr all cmpanies. Yes, language is cnstantly changing, but that desn’t make grammar unimprtant. Gd grammar is credibility, especially n the Internet. And, fr better r wrse, peple judge yu if yu can’t tell the difference between “their” “there” and “they’re”.
Gd grammar makes gd business sense – and nt just when it cmes t hiring writers. Writing isn’t in the fficial jb descriptin f mst peple in ur ffice. Still, we give ur grammar test t everybdy, including ur salespeple, ur peratins staff, and ur prgrammers.
Grammar signifies mre than just a persn’s ability t remember high schl English. I’ve fund that peple wh make fewer mistakes n a grammar test als make fewer mistakes when they are ding smething cmpletely unrelated t writing – like stcking shelves r labeling parts. It is the same with prgrammers. Applicants wh dn’t think writing is imprtant are likely t think lts f ther things als aren’t imprtant.
32. The authr agrees with Lynne Truss in that ________.
A. grammar mistakes can’t be tlerated
B. bks n grammar make peple stupid
C. peple need t learn basic grammar
D. grammar mistakes are abslutely unavidable
33. What’s the authr’s “zer tlerance” apprach t these jb seekers wh mix up basic grammar?
A. They shuld be left ut fr a jb. B. They have t crrect their mistakes.
C. They aren’t qualified fr their jbs.D. They must be severely punished.
34. Which f the fllwing is TRUE f iFixit and Dzuki?
A. Only ne f them has a cmpulsry grammar test.
B. They are cmpanies where ne learns grammar.
C. Grammar is quite imprtant fr their existence.
D. They depend n grammar crrectin fr a living.
35. What can we learn frm the text?
A. Cmpanies giving grammar tests may have n gd business sense.
B. Grammar becmes unimprtant as language is cnstantly changing.
C. A “zer tlerance” apprach t grammar errrs might seem a little unfair.
D. Peple wh pay attentin t writing may pay attentin t ther things.

5.Tw new studies suggest that mdern running shes culd increase the risk f injuries t runners.
One study invlved sixty-eight healthy yung wmen and men wh ran at least twenty-fur kilmeters a week. The runners were bserved n a treadmill machine (跑步机). Smetimes they wre running shes. Other times they ran bareft (赤脚).
Researchers frm the JKM Technlgies cmpany in Virginia, the University f Virginia and the University f Clrad did the study.

The ther study appeared in the jurnal Nature. It cmpared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were frm Harvard University in Massachusetts, Mi University in Kenya and the University f Glasgw in Sctland.
They divided the runners int three grups. One grup had always run sheless. Anther grup had always run with shes. And the third grup had changed t sheless running.
Runners wh wear shes usually cme dwn heel first. That puts great frce n the back f the ft. But the study fund that bareft runners generally land n the frnt r middle f their ft. That way they ease int their landing and avid striking their heel.
Harvard’s Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way mst running shes are designed may explain why thse wh wear them land n their heels. The heel f the she is bigger and heavier than ther parts f the she, s it wuld seem mre likely t cme dwn first. Als, the heel generally has thick material under it t sften landings.
But the researchers d nt suggest that runners immediately start running bareft. They say it takes sme training. And there can be risks, like running when yur feet are t cld t feel if yu get injured.
The study was partly supprted by Vibram, which makes a kind f ftwear that it says is like running bareft. The findings have gtten a lt f attentin. But the researchers say there are many prblems in the way the press has reprted in their paper. S they have tried t explain their findings n a Harvard Website.
