展开1.A few mnths ag as I wandered thrugh my parents’ huse, the same huse I grew up in, I had a sudden, scary realizatin. When my parents bught the huse, in 1982, they were nly tw years lder than I am nw. I tried t imagine myself in tw years, ready t settle dwn and buy the huse I’d still be living in almst 30 years later.
It seemed ridiculus. On a practical level, there’s n way I culd affrd t buy a huse anytime sn. Mre imprtantly, I wuldn’t want t. I’m nt sure where I’ll be living in tw years, r what kind f jb I’ll have. And I dn’t think I’ll be ready t settle dwn and stay in ne place.
S this is prbably the generatin gap that divides my friends and me frm ur parents. When ur parents were ur age, they’d gtten their educatin, chsen a career, and were starting t settle int respnsible adult lives.
My friends and I – “Generatin Y” – still aren’t sure what we want t d with ur lives. Whatever we end up ding, we want t make sure we’re happy ding it. We’d rather take risks first, try ut different jbs, and mve frm ne city t anther until we find ur favrite place. We’d rather spend ur mney n travel than put it in a savings accunt.
This casual attitude twards respnsibility has caused sme critics t call my generatin “arrgant”, “impatient”, and “verprtected”. Sme f these cmplaints have a pint. As children we were encuraged t succeed in schl, but als t have fun. We grew up in a wrld full f technlgical innvatin: cellphnes, the Internet, instant messaging, and vide games.
Our parents lked t rise vertically(垂直的)– starting at the bttm f the ladder and slwly making their way t the tp, n the same track, ften fr the same cmpany. That desn’t apply t my generatin.
Because f that, it may take us lnger than ur parents t arrive at respnsible, stable adulthd. But that’s nt necessarily a bad thing. In ur desire t find satisfactin, we will wrk harder, struggle fr ways t keep life interesting, and gain a brader set f experiences and knwledge than ur parents’ generatin did.
