    1. Fans f US televisin dramas watch their favrite series fr different reasns: sme want t imprve their English skills, thers just want t kill time.
Sme TV series are mre than pure entertainment―they have a certain depth. Mad Men, which returned with a sixth seasn recently; Mnday Mrnings, which just finished its first seasn; and Mdern Family, which sweeps the awards every year, are just a few examples.
Why d these shws stand ut amng s many similar nes? TV critics Raymnd Zhu will give yu an idea f why sme shws are better than thers.
    Perid drama—Mre than time travel
Perid dramas are intended t capture the ambience (气氛) f a particular era. Directrs must therefre attract audiences as much by their recreatin f a histrical setting as by an interesting stryline.
Mad Men is an excellent example f this balance being struck. Set in New Yrk during the 1960s, it accurately shws US attitudes in the wrkplace thrugh the alchlism and chain-smking cmmn f the time, and places an absrbing plt right in its center.
But rather than merely presenting a past decade, Mad Men’s subtle (微妙的) descriptin f the struggles f white-cllar wrkers at the time, bth male and female, makes it stand ut.
“The series’ attentin t detail is superb,” Raymnd Zhu said. “Fr example, creatr Matthew Weiner makes Dn Draper―the leading rle f the series―drive a Buick instead f a Cadillac, because Weiner thinks the ad man lacks the self-pride t buy a luxury car. It’s this kind f attentiveness that raises the shw’s artistic value.”
    Critics als recmmend
Anther perid drama that wrks is Bradwalk Empire, set during the prhibitin perid f the 1920s and 1930s in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Heather Havrilesky at Saln magazine nted hw the shw “revels in the ddities(怪事) f its time, peeling back the layers f plite sciety t reveal a shadw wrld f criminals and pliticians wrking tgether t keep the liqur flwing.”
Why des it appeal t viewers? Because they knw that the “liqur” is a metaphr (暗喻) fr tday’s plitical scandals (丑闻).

3.With nly a click f the muse, rumrs can be frwarded between micrblgs very quickly. As an example, recently, perceptive netizens discvered that sme phts displayed n micrblgs depicting Beijing’s June rainstrm had actually been fabricated.
Sina.cm is ne f the majr internet prtals(门户网站) in China with hundreds and thusands f users, and a majrity f celebrities and renwned citizens have their micrblg accunts n this prtal. As recently as six mnths ag, the website decided t establish a specialized team t verify rumrs and prvide accurate infrmatin fr its users. Tan Cha is in charge f the team.
“Befre I tk the jb, I usually culdn’t identify what infrmatin was real and what was fake. But during the rumr verificatin prcess, we discvered that a lt f infrmatin was false, including fake phts, fake news stries and rumrs that had been spread thrugh micrblgs.”
It‘s nt just website prtals which are taking n fact-checking respnsibilities, but als a number f civic-minded netizens, wh recently set up a Rumr Verificatin Federatin n Sina.cm’s micrblg system t help netizens identify fake infrmatin nline.
Dianzizheng is the team leader f the federatin. He says they’ve publicized mre than 150 pieces which refute rumrs, which attracted mre than 10 thusand visitrs within tw mnths.
“We live in an age f new media, s we can’t use the ld methds t verify rumrs. We can’t wait fr the media t verify the facts with related administrative departments and then release a frmal annuncement. We can’t allw rumrs t run rampant and then deal with it, we need t fight rumrs while they’re spreading. I think that this is the best way t deal with rumrs nwadays.”
Sme experts say this demnstrates the advantages f the internet cmpared t ther traditinal media. The pen platfrm allws infrmatin t be examined and clarified by netizens. But experts like Ding Wengu, President f the Jurnalism and Cmmunicatin Cllege at the China University f Plitical Science and Law says this self-crrectin functin f the internet is still quite limited.
“It’s still quite difficult t tell which infrmatin is true in such an pen envirnment by just reading a number f different pinins n the same issue. This is smething which we need t pay attentin t. If sciety is deluged with t much false infrmatin, and it’s allwed t spread in such a fast manner, then peple will be suspicius f all kinds f infrmatin including imprtant infrmatin frm authrities. It als exacerbates(恶化) prblems relating t scial cmmunicatins and mutual-understanding, which in turn harms sciety as a whle.”
Experts suggest that the gvernment shuld react mre quickly in the internet age. Once a rumr begins t spread, administrative departments shuld make annuncements as early as pssible t dispel rumrs befre they lead t bad utcmes.
    Sina.cm decided t fund a specialized team t ____.

They suggest taking the stairs rather than the lift, walking up escalatrs, playing active games with yur children, dancing r gardening. And accrding t a sprts psychlgist, Prfessr Biddle, gyms "are nt making the natin fit", and may even cause harm.
There's new scientific evidence that t much exercise may actually be bad fr yu. Scientists at the University f Ulster have fund that unsuitable exercise releases dangerus free radicals that can adversely (ppsitely) affect nrmal functin in unfit peple. The nly peple wh shuld push their bdies t that level f exercise n a regular basis are trained athletes.
S, shuld we frget abut gyms and fllw sme expert's advice t reduce sedentary (久坐不动的) activities and increase exercise in ur daily life? But trading nline is gaining ppularity these days, with several sites in peratin, including Hme Exchanges. Funded in 1992, with sme 28,000 listings, this cmpany bills itself as the wrld’s largest hme exchange club, reprting that membership has increased 30% this year.
The annual fee is usually less than US$100. Members can access thusands f listings fr apartments, villas, suburban hmes and farms arund the wrld. Initial cntact is made via e-mail, with subsequent cmmunicatin usually by phne. Befre a match is made, ptential swappers tend t discuss a lt.
