[2023贵州贵阳摸底] Dandelin (蒲公英) seeds can travel fr miles befre finally flating dwn and settling smewhere new. Researchers recently discvered hw the plants decide t spread. "We nticed that the dandelin parachute (降落伞) is clsed in fggy mrnings but then pen again when the sun is up during the day," accrding t Nami Nakayama, a researcher f biengineering. "The dandelin uses a bunch f hairs t imprve air drag and aid its flight. Unlike insects r birds, they dn’t need any energy input t fly a lng distance — even hundreds f kilmeters — they simply catch the wind."
Researchers discvered the parachutes pen and clse using what they say is like an actuatr (触动器), a device that changes energy and signals int mvement. But this actuatr desn’t use any energy. The middle f the dandelin’s parachute is able t sense the amunt f humidity (湿度) by absrbing water mlecules (分子) in the air. Using signals abut humidity infrmatin, they either pen their parachutes and fly ff r they clse them and stay where they are.
"The center f the parachute changes its shape, mving the hairs altgether in unisn(一起)," Nakayama says. "It’s basically a spnge made f n-lnger living plant cells, which are arranged in a tube empty inside. The inner side and the uter side swell with water t different degrees, and that drives the mvement."
Knwing what causes dandelins t spread their seeds culd help scientists learn hw they deal with climate change. They say understanding the respnse culd help researchers design new sft rbts, which are thse made frm flexible materials that imitate sft bdies. "Hw plants mve their bdy parts are different frm animals and a simple, lcalized expansin culd be enugh t mve arms," Nakayama says. "Mvement f a few arms has been achieved, but this is the first f many arm actuatrs. It is simple in design, s there is a lt f space fr bimimicry (仿生学)."

[2024广东南粤名校联考]When Sarah Lee was a child, she lved t watch the birds in her backyard and wndered hw they culd fly s effrtlessly. As she grew lder, Sarah became interested in the science behind flight, s she decided t study aerspace engineering in cllege.
After graduatin, Sarah began wrking fr a cmpany that designed airplanes. Hwever, she sn realized that the traditinal methds f airplane design were nt always efficient r sustainable. She began t wnder if there was a way t design airplanes that mimicked the natural wrld.
Sarah started t study birds and insects, bserving hw they were able t fly with such grace and efficiency. She asked questins like: Hw d birds adjust their wings t different wind cnditins? Hw d insects use their wings t hver in place?
With this knwledge, Sarah began t design airplanes that incrprated bimimicry, r the imitatin f nature. She created wings that culd adjust their shape based n wind cnditins, just like a bird’s wings. She als designed planes that culd hver in place, like a dragnfly.

[2024辽宁沈阳市郊联体考试]There is n lack f excellent flying builders — such as bees — in nature. T build a nest, these insects team up t cllect the needed materials and fllw the specificatin f a cmplex design that ends up being many times their size. This building prcess takes mnths, even lnger than their average lifespan, during which the insects must adjust as they g.
Inspired by these insect building teams, Mirk Kvac, a rbticist, develped a way t imprve 3D printing fr the cnstructin industry. A typical 3D printer is limited by the range f its nzzle (喷嘴), and can nly make bjects smaller than itself. Besides, 3D cnstructin rbtics currently fcuses mstly n grund-based rbts. And large-scale systems that need t be cnnected t a pwer supply are limited in places where they can be laid ut.
Dr Kvac’s team has remved these limitatins by giving the printer nzzle wings. Dr Kvac describes a system f flying rbts that is cmpsed f tw types f drnes:BuilDrnes and ScanDrnes.
First, a builder flies ver its area f peratin and begins t release a jet f the building material. Once the builder rbt has sprayed a layer f material, the scanner rbt flies ver and inspects the prgress. The scanner then calculates the next layer that the builder shuld make, while als crrecting any errrs that might have been discvered in what has already been built. At this pint, peple can als step in the prcess when necessary.
The researchers tested the system’s capabilities by building bth a large cylinder (圆柱体)(72 layers and 2 meters tall) made f a lightweight material, and a small ne (28 layers, 18 cm) made f a high-density mixture. The tasks were nt simple. Making circles n tp f ther circles wuld nt have wrked, because the perfect alignment required wuld have been impractical t achieve. As a result, Dr Kvac’s rbts passed the test with flying clrs — the cylinders were built t within 5 mm f the width and height f the planned structures, which is f sufficient quality, as far as British building requirements are cncerned.
Because the flying rbts can, in thery, perate anywhere, they culd fix things in dangerus r therwise inaccessible places.
