Even after mre than a thusand years have passed, we can still feel the pwer within its burning eyes, bared teeth and kicking hves. Night-Shining White, nw kept in New Yrk’s Metrplitan Museum f Art, is regarded as ne f the mst significant hrse paintings in the histry f Chinese art. Its artist, Han Gan, is knwn fr his skill in capturing nt nly the physical features f the animal, but als its inner spirit and strength.

A leading hrse painter f the Tang dynasty, Han Gan was knwn fr capturing nt nly the likeness f a hrse but als its spirit. This painting, the mst famus wrk attributed t the artist, is a prtrait f a charger (战马) f Emperr Xuanzng (r. 712–56). With its burning eye, flaring nstrils, and dancing hfs, the fiery-tempered hrse epitmises (是...的典范) Chinese myths abut Central Asian “celestial steeds（神马）” that “sweated bld” and were actually dragns in disguise.

2 Brn int a pr family in the early Tang Dynasty, the yung Han Gan had t help supprt his family by wrking in a lcal wine shp. His artistic talent was discvered by accident when he was sent t the pet Wang Wei’s huse t cllect payment fr sme wine.

3 The Tang emperrs were very fnd f hrses. This meant that the animal was a frequent subject fr artists. At that time, the mst cmmn way t study hrse painting was by cpying the wrks f previus painters. Han Gan’s methd, hwever, was different—he bserved the animal itself. He was a frequent visitr t the ryal stables and even mved in t live with the stable wrkers fr quite sme time.
