    Absence f evidence is nt the same thing as evidence f absence. But if yu try t find the difference and keep failing t get it, yu can be frgiven. And s it is with the cmplicated subject f explicit(明确的) grammar teaching in schls, and its link with imprved writing ability.
    A recent study, like nearly all previus studies n this subject, fund that teaching kids hw t label(标注) the bits and pieces in a sentence des nt make them better writers. Other bservers may begin t wnder whether the Natinal Curriculum, which since 2014 has made grammar such a central part f its English prgram, might have gne dwn a blind alley.
    The prmter f the curriculum, a frmer secretary f educatin, Michael Gve, insisted n the insertin f persnal preference int the grammar curriculum, ntably the subjunctive frm, “If I were”. Mentin f his name alne wrinkles many teachers’nses—partly because sme f them were hardly prepared t teach the new material themselves after decades in which grammar was largely absent frm classrms.
    In reflectin, it seems unsurprising that learning t underline a mdal verb, such as “can”, “shuld” and “may”, des little t help students use them effectively in their wn writing. These wrds are anyway grasped by tiny children withut the need t knw what they are called. This may lead t the cnclusin that the teaching f grammar shuld be shelved(搁置) altgether. Hwever, it shuldn’t be abandned, thugh it shuld be refrmed.
    There are practical reasns fr teaching and learning grammar. One is that an explicit knwledge f it will make learning a freign language easier. If yu did intuit(直觉上知道) hw t make subrdinate clauses in yur mther tngue, getting t grasp them in a freign language in later years is simpler if yu knw hw t define and spt them.
    Fr grammarians keen n the jbs f the future, the field f natural language prcessing is bming. Technlgical talents have invented prgrams fr autmated translatin, speech recgnitin and ther services that are actually usable, even if far frm perfect. These tls may rely mre n knwledge f AI than f grammar, but grammar still matters.
    Grammar culd still be taught better. One small study shwed imprvement in sme students when cncepts were linked cncretely t writing tasks. Therefre, the science f hw wrds cmbine t make meaning is fascinating as well as fundamental.
