71 years after starting cllege, a 90-year-ld wman, Jyce Vila DeFauw, was graduating this year. She first entered cllege in 1951, studying early educatin, and later, hme ecnmics. She left schl after three and a half years due t marriage.
The mm f nine, wh is nw als a grandmther t 17 and great-grandmther t 26, was busy thrugh the years but never frgt abut cllege. “I must have tld the children that I wish I had finished back in the 1950s,” DeFauw recalled. “They suggested that I g back and I thught ‘Well, OK.’” Since the pandemic began in 2019,instead f walking t campus t attend classes, she did s behind a cmputer screen frm her retirement hme. “I needed a cmputer and they gt ne fr me and s I’ve been able t use it and enjy it ’’
DeFauw reentered Nrthern Illinis University (NIU) in August 2019 and began t take nline curses tward a bachelr’s degree (学士学位) in general studies. Althugh there were times when she struggled with the curses and even thught abut giving up, DeFauw kept ding schl wrk almst every day. “We get t exchange ideas and things thrugh the cmputer and I’ve had wnderful instructrs that guided me,” DeFauw said. “As far as the encuragement f everyne—my friends, my family and my teachers—I just can’t give up.”

Despite a lt f cleaning, Lags has n prper system t dispse f rubbish, and nt having public awareness f pllutin brings a huge envirnmental challenge. Litter gets washed away by the rains and waterways and ends up in muntains f rubbish n the beaches. Light-huse Beach is ne f the beaches. It stretches fr abut 100 kilmeters alng the Atlantic, all the way t neighbring Benin. Lined with palm trees, the beach culd be beautiful if it weren’t fr all the pllutin.
“It is time that we shuld raise awareness f keeping the envirnment clean and clean up all the plastic,” says Chima Chukwura, wh helped pick up rubbish n Lighthuse Beach. At the end f a tiring day, 230 large bin bags were put tgether n the ht sand, filled with dirty plastic.
“Althugh the jb is challenging, a cmpany will cme and pick them up tmrrw. All the plastic here will get reused. Sld fr $ 500 a tnne, the plastic culd bring $ 250 millin t Lags each year, and a cleaner envirnment culd prmte the develpment f the city,” says Owade Yussuf, rganiser f the cleanup.
As the vlunteers leave at the end f the day, always just 100 meters is clean. “There is still a lt t d. Australian scientists have successfully tested a new methd fr freezing and string cral larvae(珊瑚幼虫), which they say culd eventually help restre the wild cral reefs(珊瑚礁) threatened by climate change. They are struggling t prtect cral reefs as rising cean tem peratures damage ecsystems. The Great Barrier Reef has suffered fur events f becming white in the last seven years including the first ne during a La Nina phenmenn, which typically brings cler temperatures.
Frzen cral can be stred and later reintrduced t the wild, but the current prcess requires sme mdern equipment including lasers(激光). The scientists say a new lightweight “crymesh(冷冻网)” can be prduced cheaply and better prtect cral. In a December lab trial, the wrld’s first with Great Barrier Reef cral, they used the “crymesh” t freeze cral larvae at the Australian Institute f Marine Sciences(AIMS). “If we can prtect the cral, we’ll have tls fr the future t really help restre the reefs, and this technlgy fr cral reefs in the future is a real game-changer,” said Mary Hagedrn, Senir Research Scientist at AIMS.
The “crymesh” was previusly tested n smaller and larger kinds f Hawaiian crals. Sme trials n the larger kinds failed. But then ther trials are cntinuing with larger varieties f Great Barrier Reef cral. The trials invlved scientists frm AIMS, the Smithsnian Natinal Z and Cnservatin Bilgy Institute, the Great Barrier Reef fundatin and the Tarnga Cnservatin Sciety Australia as part f the Reef Restratin and Adaptatin Prgram.
