The study desn’t prve that classrms that face mre challenges directly cause mental health prblems in kids. Hwever, “being in a classrm with a lack f resurces might disadvantageusly affect children’s mental health because children are frustrated r disheartened by their surrundings,” said study lead authr Melissa A. “Teachers may als be mre discuraged when they can’t teach prperly due t the fact that they are missing key parts,” she explained.
Milkie said the study shws that schls and teachers play imprtant rles in children’s mental health. “I think parents care a lt abut their children’s mental health—their emtinal and behaviral well-being—but we as a sciety dn’t fcus n that as much as we talk abut and think abut academic utcmes,” Milkie said.
The study is based n interview s with the parents and teachers f abut 10,700 first-graders in the United States. The researchers fund that students in classrms with fewer resurces, in terms f inadequate teaching materials and teachers wh didn’t feel supprted by clleagues, were mre likely t experience prblems in several mental health areas.
