Fr their research,Kersting and Linares mnitred 243 clnies f the endangered reef-building cral Cladcra caespitsa(丛生) in Spain’s Clumbretes Islands Marine Reserve ver 16 years,starting in 2002.The mnitring revealed that Cladcra caespitsa in the Mediterranean uses rejuvenescence t cpe with warming events.This prcess invlves the plyps(息肉) — r the individual cral animals in a clny—shrinking inward and abandning their skeletns(骨骼) during warm perids,befre rejuvenating at a later pint.“What happens is that sme plyps in a cral clny—smetimes just ne—reduces cmpletely its dimensins and partially retreats frm its skeletn,” Kersting said.“Once the stressful event is ver,the shrunken r rejuvenated plyp recvers its size and builds up a new skeletn.Eventually,it begins t reprduce itself thrugh budding and begins t cver the dead clny surfaces.”
He cntinued,“The results were very surprising because I started t bserve clnies that were dead years ag,that were shwing living parts many years after their death.”
