"Nne."
"Where did yu g?"
"The crner f Belleville and Unin Avenues."
"What did yu d?"
"Std n the crner waiting fr smebdy t buy a Saturday Evening Pst.”
"Yu just stry there?"
"Didn't sell a single ne."
"My Gd, Russell!"
Uncle Allen put in, "Well, I've decided t take the Pst." I handed him a cpy and he paid me a nickel. It was the first nickel I earned.
Afterwards my mther taught me hw t be a salesman. I wuld have t ring drbells, address adults with self—cnfidence, and persuade them by saying that n ne, n matter hw pr, culd affrd t be withut the Saturday Evening Pst in the hme.
One day, I tld my mther I'd changed my mind. I didn't want t make a success in the magazine business.
"If yu think yu can change yur mind like this," she replied, "yu'll becme a gd-fr-nthing." She insisted that, as sn as schl was ver, I shuld start ringing drbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said n, she wuld scld me
My mther and I had fught this battle almst as lng as I culd remember. My mther, dissatisfied with my father's plain wrkman's life, determined that I wuld nt grw up like him and his peple. Cntrary t advertisements seen n televisin, read in magazines, r heard n the radi, spending a lt f mney n a gift fr a friend r lved ne is ttally unnecessary. Many peple cllect phts r mements(纪念品)frm special events, trips, r celebratins thrughut their lives, thrwing them in a drawer r cardbard bx smewhere, intending t srt them ut later. It seems, thugh, that "later" never cmes. S, the next time yu' re ready t buy a silk scarf r pair f leather glves fr that special smene, cnsider srting thrugh that junk drawer filled with mements and special phts.
Fr example, yu can decrate an inexpensive picture frame with clrful buttns fr yur mther wh is interested in sewing r use tiny machine parts fr yur wrkshp-crazed brther. Inserting a special pht f yu and that certain smene will create a gift that will be treasured fr ever. Shadw bxes are a wnderful way t display several bjects frm a single special event, such as a wedding. Take the riginal wedding invitatin, a dried flwer frm the table centerpiece, r anything else that yu can gather frm the wedding, and display them in bx.
When yu have many phts and mements, make a pht album r scrapbk(剪贴簿)fr a friend r family member. Tday, the ptins fr decrating yur bk are nearly endless. Entering a scrapbking stre can make yur head spin. If this happens t yu n yur first scrapbking visit, cnsider taking an intrductry class, which many stres ffer. Of curse, yu will have a much better idea f which scrapbk supplies t buy when the class ends.
Pictures r bks that can be enjyed ver and ver again are ne-f-a-kind, riginal gifts. There is nthing like receiving a gift that cmes straight frm the heart. Such gifts help peple recall happy times and strengthen the bnd between the giver and the receiver.

There are tw types f peple in the wrld. Althugh they have equal degree f health and wealth and ther cmfrts f life, ne becmes happy and the ther becmes unhappy. This arises frm the different ways in which they cnsider things, persns, events and the resulting effects upn their minds.
Peple wh are t be happy fix their attentin n the cnvenience f things: the pleasant parts f cnversatin, the well prepared dishes, the gdness f the wine and the fine weather. They enjy all the cheerful things. Thse wh are t be unhappy think and speak nly f the ppsite things. Therefre, they are cntinually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sur the pleasure f sciety, hurt many peple, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn f mind was funded in nature, such unhappy persns wuld be the mre t bed pitied. The intentin f criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitatin. It grws int a habit, unknwn t its pssessrs. The habit may be strng, but it may be cured when thse wh have it realize its bad effects n their interests and tastes. I hpe this little warning may be f service t them, and help them change this habit.
Althugh in fact it is chiefly an act f the imaginatin, it has serius results in life since it brings n deep srrw and bad luck. Thse peple ffend many thers; Nbdy lves them, and n ne treats them with mre than the mst cmmn pliteness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them int arguments. If they aim at getting sme advantages in scial psitin r frtune, nbdy wishes them success. Nr will anyne start a step r speak a wrd t favr their hpes. If they bring n themselves public bjectins, n ne will defend r excuse them, and many will jin t criticize their wrngdings. These shuld change this bad habit and be pleased with what is
pleasing, withut wrrying needlessly abut themselves and thers. If they d nt(change this bad habit), it will be gd fr thers t avid any cntact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and smetimes very incnvenient, especially when ne becmes mixed up in their quarrels.
51. Peple wh are unhappy____________.
A. always cnsider things differently frm thers
B. usually are affected by the results f certain things
C. usually misunderstand what thers think r say
D. always discver the unpleasant side f certain things
52. The phrase "sur the pleasure f sciety" mst nearly means____________.
A. have a gd taste with scial life B. make thers unhappy
C. tend t scld thers penly D. enjy the pleasure f life
53. We can cnclude frm the passage that____________.
A. we shuld pity all such unhappy peple
B. such unhappy peple are dangerus t scial life
C. peple can get rid f the habit f unhappiness
D. unhappy peple can nt understand happy persns
54. If such unhappy persns insist n keeping the habit, the authr suggests that peple shuld____________.
A. prevent any cmmunicatin with them
B. shw n respect and pliteness t them
C. persuade them t recgnize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
55. In this passage, the writer mainly____________.
A. describes tw types f peple wh enjy the same scial life
B. laugh at the peple wh make us unhappy and disgusting
C. suggests the unhappy peple shuld get rid f the habits f unhappiness
D. tells peple hw t live a happy life in ur daily lives

第三部分: 写作(共二节, 满分35分)
第一节阅读表达(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分)
阅读下面短文, 并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
Science has a lt f uses. It can uncver laws f nature, cure diseases, make bmbs, and help bridges t stand up. Indeed science is s gd' at what it des that there's always a temptatin(诱惑)t drag it int prblems where it may nt be helpful. David Brks, authr f The Scial Animal: The Hidden Surces f Lve, Character, and Achievement, appears t be the latest in a lng line f writers wh have failed t resist the temptatin.
Brks gained fame fr several bks. His latest bk The Scial Animal, hwever, is mre ambitius and serius than his earlier bks. It is an attempt t deal with a set f weighty tpics. The bk fcuses n big questins: What has science revealed abut human nature? What are the surces f character? And why are sme peple happy and successful while thers aren't?
T answer these questins, Brks surveys a wide range f disciplines(学科). Cnsidering this, yu might expect the bk t be a dry recitatin(背诵)f facts. But Brks has structured his bk in an unrthdx(非常规的), and perhaps unfrtunate, way. Instead f intrducing scientific theries, he tells a stry, within which he tries t make his pints, perhaps in rder t keep the reader's attentin. S as Harld and Erica, the her and herine in his stry, live thrugh childhd, we hear abut the science f child develpment and as they begin t date we hear abut the thery f sexual attractin. Brks carries this thrugh t the death f ne f his characters.
On the whle, Brks' stry is acceptable if uninspired. As ne wuld expect, his writing is mstly clear and, t be fair, sme chapters stand ut abve the rest. I enjyed, fr instance, the chapter in which Harld discvers hw t think n his wn. While Harld and Erica are certainly nt strng r memrable characters, the mre serius prblems with The Scial Animal lie elsewhere. These prblems partly invlve Brks' attempt t translate his tale int science.
56. What is the main idea f paragraph 2?(n mre than 10 wrds)
57. Why des Brk use a stry t intrduce scientific theries?( n mre than 15wrds)
58. Accrding t The Scial Animal, hw can we learn abut the science f child develpment?(n mre than 10 wrds)
59. Please explain the underlined wrd "weighty" in English.(n mre than 1 wrd)
60. D yu like Brks' way f dealing with science in The Scial Animal? Why?(n mre than 20 wrds)
