“What is it?” whispered Huck, ging white with fear.
“Keep still! There’s smene dwnstairs!”
The bys lay dwn, lking thrugh the hles in the wden flr. There were tw men dwnstairs. One was an ld Spaniard(西班牙人) in a wide hat. The ther was dirty and unpleasant-lking. The bys shk with fear.
Then the Spaniard spke. It was Indian Je. Tm and Huck felt even mre frightened.
The men sat dwn n the flr and ate. They then lay dwn and fell asleep. When the tw men wke up, the stranger said, “It’s time fr us t mve, partner. What will we d with the $650 frm the rbbery?”
“Let’s keep $30 each and leave the rest here.”
The dirty man went t the fireplace(壁炉) and mved a stne. Then he lifted ut a bag full f mney and tk ut sme cins.

Grwing up, I thught math class was smething t be endured, nt enjyed. I disliked memrizing frmulas (公式) and taking tests, all fr the dull gal f getting a gd grade. One f my teachers tld my mther that I was “slw”. But my prblem wasn’t with math itself. In fact, when a tpic seemed particularly interesting, I wuld g t the library and read mre abut it.

The chances f that happening were very lw. But that didn’t stp my caches frm encuraging me t believe I culd reach my gal, and preparing and pushing me t wrk fr it. They made vide tapes f my perfrmances and sent them t cllege caches arund the cuntry. In the end, a Big Ten schl, Penn State, did ffer me a schlarship.
I wish math teachers were mre like ftball caches. Students are influenced by mre than just the quality f a lessn plan. They als react t the passin f their teachers and the engagement f their peers and they try t achieve a sense f purpse. They get advantages frm detailed and exact instructins and cnstant feedback (反馈).
Until I gt t cllege, I didn’t really knw what mathematics was. I still thught f it as labrius (耗时费力的) calculatins. Then my prfessr handed me a bk and suggested that I shuld think abut a particular prblem. It wasn’t easy, but it was attractive. My prfessr kept giving me prblems, and I kept chasing them, even thugh I culdn’t always slve them immediately. The mathematical research I was ding had little in cmmn with what I did in my high schl classrms. Instead, it was clser t the math and lgic puzzles I did n my wn as a by. When my sn finally started schl arund the age f fur, I felt as thugh I’d been prmted (晋级) t the new psitin f Schl Parent. It was an unexpectedly challenging rle, ne withut additinal benefits, r a raise fr that matter.
As a direct result f starting schl, there was the surprisingly unpleasant changes t ur schedule (time-table). As parents, we were ill-prepared fr the trubled time we had trying t get used t the practice f schl.

Getting t schl n time meant becming the ‘ht mess’ mum wh were ften seen in mvies. I was rushing kids ut the dr, frgetting lunch bxes and lsing car keys.
As a huge mrning persn, I tried my best t ensure that schl mrnings remained calm and slw-paced. I prepared as much as pssible the night befre. But it still felt like we were in a rush, which I really hated.
The trick. I later discvered, was t cver up my feeling f anxiety. I chanted t myself “D nt rush him, n ne likes t be rushed” while helping him get thrugh his mrning rutine and tasks in a timely manner. Whatever frustratin (沮丧) I fell abut hw slw he was mving, I wuldn’t let him knw it. I even didn’t allw anyne in ur huse t say phrases like, “Hurry up, we’re ging t be late!” Our cmmn gal, was nt just t get ur sn ut the dr in time fr schl, but mre imprtantly prve that mrnings can be relaxed and enjyable, rather than a hrrible start t the day.
Of curse by the time summer hliday came, ur family had grwn wise enugh. In what felt like the ‘lngest shrtest time’, we went frm anxius and cnfused, t calm and cnfident nce again. We were far mre prepared t have a smther start t the new schl year.

“Quickly, Drthy,” she shuted. “G t the cellar (地窖).”
