Wuld it surprise yu t learn that, like animals, trees cmmunicate with each ther and pass n their wealth t the next generatin?
UBC Prfessr Simard explains hw trees are much mre cmplex than mst f us

Nitrgen (氮) and carbn are shared thrugh miles f undergrund fungi (真菌)
netwrks, making sure that all trees in the frest eclgical system give and receive just the right amunt t keep them all healthy. This hidden system wrks in a very similar way t the netwrks f neurns (神经元) in ur brains, and when ne tree is destryed, it affects all.
Simard talks abut "mther trees", usually the largest and ldest plants n which all ther trees depend. She explains hw dying trees pass n the wealth t the next generatin, transprting imprtant minerals t yung trees s they may cntinue t grw. When humans cut dwn "mther trees" with n awareness f these highly cmplex "tree scieties" r the netwrks n which they feed, we are reducing the chances f survival fr the entire frest.
"We didn't take any ntice f it" Simard says sadly. "Dying trees mve nutritin int the yung trees befre dying, but we never give them chance." If we culd put acrss the message t the frestry industry, we culd make a huge difference twards ur envirnmental prtectin effrts fr the future.
What wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Old Trees Cmmunicate Like Humans B. Yung Trees Are In Need Of Prtectin
    C. Trees Are Mre Awesme Than Yu Think D. Trees Cntribute T Our Sciety

New research published this week in the Internatinal Jurnal f Obesity shws that wrking wmen are mre likely t be verweight, and the mre yu wrk, the mre punds yu’re likely t pile n. Like many wmen, I wrk... a lt! As a self-emplyed nutritin cmmunicatins specialist, I sit at my desk, in frnt f a cmputer, fr hurs n end. Sitting alne is ne f the wrst things yu can d fr yur health, and it’s directly linked t being verweight and increased fatness, s the fact that wmen in the wrkfrce gain weight isn’t that surprising. If yu wrk, yu have less time t mve arund. Obesity(肥胖症)researchers are revealing many ther ways that emplyment is harmful t yur diet and waistline.
In the Internatinal Jurnal f Obesity study, sme 9,276 Australian wmen aged 45-50 had their bdy weight and emplyment status mnitred fr tw years. Results? Thse wh wrked mre than 35 hurs were likely t gain weight cmpared t thse wh wrked fewer hurs r were ut f the wrkfrce. What’s mre, the mre hurs a wman wrked in a week, the mre weight she gained.
The authrs f the Australian study attribute weight gain amng wrking wmen t inactivity, lack f time fr fd preparatin, mre use f prepared fds, high levels f stress, lack f sleep and cnsuming mre alchl. ADDIS ABABA, Ethipia - One f the wrld's mst famus fssils (化石) - the 3.2 millin-year-ld Lucy skeletn ( 骨骼 ) unearthed in Ethipia in 1974 - will g n an exhibitin tur abrad fr the first time in the United States, fficials said Tuesday. Even the Ethipian public has nly seen Lucy twice.
The Lucy n exhibitin at the Ethipian Natinal Museum in the capital. Addis Ababa is a replica while the real remains are usually lcked in a secret strerm. A team frm the Museum f Natinal Service in t U.S. tur. Texas spent fur years disscusing with the Ethipians fr the U.S. tur. Which will start in Hustn next September.
"Ethipia's rich culture f bth the past and tday, is ne f the best kept secrets in the wrld," said Jel Bartsch, directr f the Hustn museum.
The six-year tur will als g t Washingtn, New Yrk. Denver and Chicag. Officials said six ther U.S. cities may be n the tur. But they said plans had nt yet been wrked ut. Traveling with Lucy will be 190 ther fssils.
Lucy, her name taken frm a Beatles sng that played in a camp the night f her discvery, is part f the skeletn f what was nce a 3½-ft-ball ape-man (猿人).

When I first gt an email accunt ten years ag, I received cmmunicatins nly frm family, friends, and clleagues. Nw it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I have an endless series f advertisement and ther crrespndence that d nt interest the at all. If we want e-mail t cntinue t be useful, we need special laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件) a crime.
If lawmakers d nt d smething sn t prhibit spam, the prblem will certainly get much wrse. Cmputer prgrams allw spammers t spend hundreds f millins f e-mails almst instantly. As mre and mre advertisers turn t spam t sell their prducts, individual(个人的)e-mail bxes are ften flded with spam e-mails. Wuld peple cntinue t use e-mail if they had t deal with an annying amunt f spam each time?
This prblem is trubling fr individuals and cmpanies as well. Many spam emails cntain cmputer viruses that can shut dwn the entire netwrk f a cmpany. Cmpanies rely n e-mail n fr their emplyees t cmmunicate with each ther. Spam frequently causes failures in their lcal cmmunicatins netwrks, and their emplyees are thus unable t cmmunicate effectively. Such a situatin results in a lss f prductivity and requires cmpanies t repeatedly repair their netwrks. These cmputer prblems raise prductin csts f cmpanies, which are, in the end, passed n t the cnsumer.
Fr these reasns, I believe that lawmakers need t legislate (立法) against spam. Spammers shuld be fined, and perhaps sent t prisn if they cntinue t disturb peple. E-mail is a tl which helps peple all ver the wrld t cmmunicate cnveniently, but spam is destrying this cnvenience.
What is the purpse f the text?
    A. T infrm B. T educate C. T persuade D. T instruct

Eating t much fatty fd, exercising t little and smking can raise yur future risk f heart disease. But there is anther factr that can cause yur heart prblems mre immediately: the air yu breathe.
Previus studies have linked high expsure (暴露)t envirnmental pllutin t an increased risk f heart prblem, but tw analyses nw shw that pr air quality can lead t heart attack r strke (中风)within as little as a few hurs after expsure. In ne review f the research, scientists fund that peple expsed t high levels f pllutants (污染物)were up t 5% mre likely t suffer a heart attack within days f expsure than thse with lwer expsure. A separate study f strke patients shwed that even air that the U. S. Envirnmental Prtectin Agency (EPA) cnsiders t be f “mderate” (良好)quality and relatively safe fr ur health can raise the risk f strke as much as 34% within 12 t 14 hurs f expsure.
The authrs f bth studies stress that these risks are relatively small fr healthy peple and certainly mdest cmpared with ther risk factrs such as smking and high bld pressure. Hwever, it is imprtant t be aware f these dangers because everyne is expsed t air pllutin regardless f lifestyle chices. S stricter regulatin by the EPA f pllutants may nt nly imprve envirnmental air quality but culd als becme necessary t prtect public health.
The authr’s purpse f writing the text is mst likely t .
    A. infrm B. persuade C. describe D. entertain

As a result, many special are quickly dying ut.
On a mre glbal level, the destructin f the rainfrest fr full-sun cffee fields als threatens (威胁) human life. Medical research ften makes use f the frests' plant and animal life, and the destructin f such species culd prevent researchers frm finding cures fr certain diseases. In additin, new cffee-grwing techniques are pisning the water lcally, and eventually the wrld's grundwater.
Bth lcally and glbally, the cntinued spread f full-sun cffee plantatins (种植园) culd mean the destructin f the rainfrest eclgy. The lss f shade trees is already causing a slight change in the wrld's climate, and studies shw that lss f xygen-giving trees als leads t air pllutin and glbal warming. Mrever, the new grwing techniques are cntributing t acidic (酸性的) sil cnditins.
It is bvius that the way much cffee is grwn affects many aspects f life, frm the lcal envirnment t the glbal eclgy. But cnsumers d have a chice. They can purchase shade-grwn cffee whenever pssible, althugh at a higher cst. The future health f the planet and mankind is surely wrth mre than an inexpensive cup f cffee.

I'd planned t spend my weekend in the sun, ptting flwers utdrs. But that was befre the pair f crws (乌鸦). Out f nwhere, they had set up their base camp in ur backyard.
We first discvered ur feathered enemies n Friday mrning. It was early, and the sund the birds made traveled thrugh ur neighbrhd. I figured they'd g away sn. But, n. They were getting luder and prbably annying my neighbrs nearly as much as us with the nise. I admit I gt a little desperate.
Then, n Sunday afternn, I lked ut the kitchen windw t see ur dg Quatchi staring at smething n the grund. I went t explre and fund a small cal-black bird in the grass. Its eyes were milky, and it stayed perfectly still as my dg walked twards it. Only when Quatchi tuched his nse t its head did it walk away. I grabbed the dg and lcked him inside and came back with my camera.
It never ccurred t me that the yung wuld be hanging ut n the grund, grwing and gaining strength as its parents guarded it frm abve. The secnd I saw this little creature I frgave the crws.
T be hnest, I've never been much f a bird persn. I als have a healthy respect fr birds. They're basically living dinsaurs.
I wish they'd chsen anther backyard. There are nly s many sunny days in Seattle, and I still can't d any gardening ut there. But I'm als grateful that I gt t see this little bit f nature unfld up clse. It's pretty amazing.
The experience has als strengthened my desire t create a beautiful backyard garden that attracts lts f bees, butterflies, and yes, birds. They are welcme here.

    A. shw an annying situatin B. share a persnal experience
    C. call n readers t prtect birds D. seek advice n dealing with crws

Stained glass (彩色玻璃) artists create different designs by making cuts n the glass t “scre” it and then breaking ff the pattern that they want t use in the finished prduct. The mst difficult cut in stained glass is called an inside cut. Basically, it’s a curved (弯曲的) line where yu thrw away the part inside f the curve. The prblem with inside cuts is that the edges f the curve tend t break ff when the pieces f scred glass are brken apart.
As the artist talked abut inside cuts, he said, “The glass will break int pieces if yu try t cut t much ff at nce. The best way t d an inside cut is t slice ff smaller curves piece-by-piece. In fact, it’s nt just the best way t d it, but it’s the nly way t d it.”
Hw many times d yu try t make a big change and cut the entire piece at nce? We cnvince urselves that we can d this all the time. We’ll cmmit t transfrming ur diet vernight r we get inspired t launch a business in a weekend r we finally get mtivated t wrk ut and push urselves t the edge f burning ut.
Why nt apprach yur gals and dreams like a stained glass artist? Starting by slicing a shallw curve and breaking a small piece ff, yu cut a slightly deeper curve and break that ff until yu have yur full inside cut. By slwly cutting deeper and deeper curves, yu prevent the glass frm breaking as it change shape.
Of curse, change isn’t easy — n matter hw yu d it. Slw gains are bring, but if we keep making small imprvements, then pretty sn we will end up with a beautiful masterpiece n ur hands instead f a bunch f brken pieces.
What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
    A. T shw his lve f stained glass.
    B. T intrduce the skill f an inside cut.
    C. T appreciate designs f stained glass artists.
    D. T share his pinins n hw t make a change.

    【解题技巧】
    找常具有概括性和深刻性的段落主题句。
1)第一句是中心句:即第一句是中心,然后围绕这一主题作具体的陈述。如果从第二句就开始对第一句进行说明,论述或描述,那第一句就是主题句。有些段落,在主题句后面有明显引出细节的信号词,如fr example, an example f; first, secnd, next, last, finally; t begin with, als, besides; ne, the ther; sme, thers等。在阅读中应尽量利用上述信号词来确定主题句的位置。
2)第二句是中心句:第一句是过渡句。第二句与第一句存在转折关系(but, hwever, yet, in fact)或者递进关系(mrever, after all, indeed)
如s,s that, therefre,thus,cnsequently; in cnclusin,in shrt; in a wrd, t sum up;all in all; generally等来确定主题句的位置在段尾。
    4)没有明显的中心句:充分发挥语文总结中心思想能力,能用最简洁的一两个词概括总结出段落主旨大意。
