We’ve all heard the stries f an actr’s struggles befre a career breakthrugh: living a hard life, wrking part-time, being a cuch ptat befre getting that majr rle. Shelby, the star f “A Dg’s Way Hme”, has a hard-luck tale that culd tp them all. Befre her big break, she was living in a landfill, rting thrugh garbage fr her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-cntrl fficer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham Cunty, Tennessee. Out n an unrelated call, Buhler sptted and apprached what she recalled was a nticeably scared puppy emerging frm the dump. “I knelt dwn and just said, ‘Oh, cme here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was s scared, but she came right up t me, and I was able t put her in my track.” The pair headed t the cunty animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and thers didn’t knw that 3,200 kilmeters away, Hllywd was lking fr a dg t play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michn. The find-a-Bella jb went t freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miller. Her missin was t search shelters natinwide fr a dg that culd play Bella. One day, Miller sptted Baby Girl’s adptin pht. “Hnestly, it was a really gd picture, and she was flat-ut smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her n persnality and the ability t respnd t simple cmmands. After assessment, she adpted Baby Girl frm the shelter, renamed her Shelby and tk her t Califrnia fr training. Miller and Shelby trained fr just ver three mnths befre filming began. Then they were tgether each day n the set.
Mst f the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s perfrmance. Variety made the cmments “an amazing dg, perfect perfrmance!”
Shelby has cme a lng way frm the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently and needed nly a secnd t cmpare the mvie star with the dg she fund frm piles f rubbish. “She is exactly the same,” Buhler said.

Back in the early 2000s, lts f peple culdn't have imagined life withut alarm clcks, CD players, calendars, cameras, r lts f ther devices. But alng came the iPhne and ther smartphnes, and they tk ver the functins f dzens f things we used t think were essential.
The smartphne stry culd even be a mdel fr fighting climate change; nt because smartphnes use a small part f the energy f all the things they replace一althugh they d—but because they represent a different apprach t design in general. And that apprach is t fcus n functin rather than frm. That requires fcusing n understanding the underlying prblem, and then engineering a wide range f ptential slutins. This apprach culd revlutinize hw we think abut energy efficiency.
Traditinally, imprvements in energy efficiency have mstly fcused n individual devices, which can be quite fruitful. But fcusing n individual devices is like if Apple had spent effrt inventing a better alarm clck, a better CD player, a better calendar, and a better camera. Nw with an iPhne, we dn’t need the standalne devices at all, because it can functin as all f them.
S when it cmes t using energy efficiently, rather than just installing a mre efficient heater, sme peple have fcused instead n the desired functin: staying warm. They designed and cated their huse s well that they culd get rid f their heater altgether, letting them heat their huse with 99% less energy.
In the same way , rather than just making cars mre efficient , what if we fcus n the desired functin—getting where we want when we want—and create an efficient transprtatin system where we can drive less r get rid f ur persnal cars entirely?
The mst energy efficient car r heater is n car, r n heater, while still being able t get arund and stay warm. In ther wrds, it’s nt thinking efficient, it’s thinking different.
8.What makes the iPhne a gd example f envirnmental prtectin?
A.Perfecting individual devices.B.Cmbining pssible functins.
C.Adpting a minimalist design.D.Reducing the energy cnsumptin.
9.Accrding t the passage , what is the cre f imprving energy efficiency?
A.Using recyclable materials.B.Revlutinizing technlgies.
C.Figuring ut varius slutins.D.Cncentrating n the essential needs.
10.What des the authr think f traditinal practices in energy imprvements?
A.Out-f-date.B.Ineffective.C.Adequate.D.Successful.
11.What can we learn frm the passage?
A.Think ut f the bx.B.Differences make it unique.
C.Be ecnmical with energy.D.Step ut f the cmfrt zne.
The US Institute f Electrical and Electrnics Engineers (IEEE) recently asked scientists, lawyers, scial scientists and ther experts t cnsider sme f these ethical dimensins. T give tw examples: n privacy, as we let mre listening devices int ur hmes, hw d we prevent the data they cllect falling int the wrng hands thrugh hacking (黑客) r simply being sld between cmpanies withut us receiving any mney? Anther example: mixed reality, including virtual reality, will becme pervasive in the next few years. As we mve frm headsets t what the IEEE cmmittee describes as “mre subtle and integrated sensry enhancements” we will use technlgy t live in an illusry wrld in many aspects f ur lives. Hw d we balance the rights f the individual, cntrl ver ur virtual identity, and the need t live and interact n a face-t-face basis while being empwered t live rich lives in mixed reality?
There is, f curse, always a tensin between innvatin and regulatin. But it can ften seem that giant steps are taken in technlgy with minimal public discussin. Take the self-driving car: althugh it may be safer than human drivers and is likely t save mre than a millin lives a year wrldwide, it will als take jbs frm drivers, traffic plice, sign-makers, car-repair cmpanies, carmakers and mre. Is this a bargain we want t make? In taking that decisin, have we given thught t a car that knws everywhere we g, decides rutes, perhaps, based n paid advertisements frm shps alng the way—and listens and sees everything we d n bard? What will happen t that data and can it be kept safe?
Additinally, while sme wrry abut the uncmmn “trlley prblem” f whm the car shuld chse t hit in a freak accident—an ld lady r a mther and baby—perhaps the mre frequent issue will be hw we find ut what the algrithm (算法) was thinking at the time f an accident, because AIs (Artificial Intelligence) are self-learning and devise their wn strategies.
Similar cncerns are emerging ver the internet f things. Rbt vacuum-cleaners already plt cleaning cycles using cmputer-aided visin that, fr sme mdels, is relayed t their manufacturers. As mre things at hme becme cnnected, they will be hackable and the data they cllect sellable.
It’s time fr sme messy, demcratic discussins abut the future f AI.
12.What is the purpse f the tw examples in Paragraph 1?
A. T cast sme light n hacking in ur mdern life.
B. T lead the reader t think f ethical issues brught by hi-tech.
C. T lead in the fllwing example cncerning the self-driving car.
D. T list the existing prblems that caught the attentin f experts.
13.What des the underlined wrd “pervasive” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Intelligent.B. Pwerful.C. Widespread.D. Skillful.
14.What is the authr’s attitude twards the big steps in technlgy?
A. Psitive.B. Negative.C. Cautius.D. Unclear.
15.Hw des the authr supprt his claim?
A. By expsing sme underlying prblems in high-tech.
B. By calling n peple t mve away frm innvatin.
C. By illustrating AI’s abilities in self-learning strategies.
D. By displaying ur cmputer-aided life in future.
