Museum visits rise in ppularity in summer
Turists were seen queuing fr lng hurs in frnt f museums and btaining entrance tickets became mre challenging. In respnse t the grwing demand, 46 museums in Beijing canceled their custmary Mnday clsures and remained pen daily until August 31. On a fggy day, I was listening t the radi n my drive when suddenly smething caught my eye ut the driver’s side windw. I turned t lk but it wasn’t clear because f the thick fg. Then I didn’t knw hw lng I was kncked ut.
It didn’t take me lng t realize I culdn’t mve either arm and my face was bleeding heavily. Over the next few days in the hspital, I began t get a clearer picture f what had happened. A lcal high schl student, rushing t class, had crssed the center line and hit me head-n. I heard thrugh friends f mine wh knew his family that he was very, very upset by what had happened. I felt bad that he had such a burden t bear at such a yung age.
Furteen mnths after the accident. I was grcery shpping when a wman I didn’t knw apprached me and asked if I was Suzanne. She intrduced herself, and I realized it was the yung man’s mther. I appreciated learning hw he was ding. He avided severe injury but needed advice t help with the emtinal trauma (创伤) f causing the accident. I culd certainly understand the difficulty f getting back behind the wheel f a car. Secretly, I wished I culd talk t him myself.
Seven mnths later, it was time fr my daughter’s Christmas band cncert at the high schl. The first adult I recgnized upn entering the auditrium was the mther wh apprached me in the grcery stre. I wndered why she was there. One yung man in a white hdie and ball cap ran up. Suddenly, I realized that it was him, the driver, as he resembled that mther.
I edged my way thrugh the crwd. “Hi, I’m Suzanne,” I greeted. “I just wanted t say that I’m kay, and I was never mad at yu. I knw this was hard n yu.” He apparently knew wh I was. “Yu d?” came a slightly muffled (模糊不清的) answer. “I’m really kay,” I added, patting him n the shulder and feeling like I was the nly persn wh culd let him frgive himself. I was the nly persn wh culd give him that gift if he culd see me and hear frm me that all was well.

Think f a city yu knw, and try t picture it five years frm nw. Will its streets be full f electric cars. sme f them self-driving? If s, then the current prblem facing electric vehicles (EVs) will be a minr prblem. Hwever, US sales have slwed well belw the gvernment’s target, EVs’ share f the British market has stpped grwing and nly 1. 2 percent f Eurpean passenger cars in 2022 were battery-pwered. My bet is that, in cities at least, the c-car wn’t gain the upper hand in the years t cme.
EVs emit mre carbn ver their life cycle than any frm f urban transprt except petrl cars. They are still wrthwhile fr peple in suburbs, wh drive lng distances every day and wh will earn back the emissins and the financial expenses by never buying gas again.
EVs face many ther bstacles. Cities are claiming back space frm cars. Paris, where I live, is having a vte n February 4 n a special parking tax fr heavier SUVs. In a few years, mayrs might start handling self-driving cars. These are s cnvenient that if they ever became affrdable fr the mass market. almst everyne wuld buy ne, and they wuld clg up (阻塞) cities.
Then there’s the prblem f charging EVs. Suburbanites with hme garages can install chargers, but the lack f public chargers n city streets hasn’t becme a majr issue yet nly because s few peple wn EVs. Even if yu find an urban charger that wrks, charging can take hurs.
Crucially, mst f the wrld’s EVs with high quality are made in China, s there wn’t be an aggressive western lbby (游说团) casing their way. On the cntrary, gvernments may well raise taxes t blck them rather than let China utperfrm yet anther western industry.
Fr a city-resident getting rid f a petrl car, the calculatin then becmes: instead f an EV, can I buy a much cheaper, health-giving e-bike that I can charge in my flat, and supplement that with the dd taxi ride? That is the trend. Lking back in five years, we may cnclude that electric cars were made fr American suburbia and fr almst nwhere else.
    28. Paris is having a vte n a special parking tax. in rder t ________.
    A. increase taxesB. spare sme space
    C. expand urban areasD. reduce traffic jams
    29. Why did western gvernments raise taxes n EVs made in China?
    A. Because the gvernments needed t prtect their dmestic industries.
    A. Because the gvernments needed t prtect their dmestic industries.
    B. Because EVs made in China didn’t reach the standard required.
    C. Because the western lbby prmted EVs made in China.
    D. Because China was desperate t exprt its gds.
    30. Which pinin might the authr agree with?
    A. EVs are ec-friendly.B. EVs are cstly fr average peple.
    C. EVs will be in huge demand.D. EV chargers are readily available.
    31. What is the main idea f the text?
    A. EVs are nt the future.B. EVs are being replaced.
    C. EVs affect the envirnment.D. EVs have alarming prblems.

As new data frm Famile reveals the lneliness issue in the UK, its funder lks at the reality f scial islatin in tday’s digital age.
A cnsumer survey cnducted by Famile has revealed that nearly half f British adults feel discnnected frm their lved nes nwadays. The past few years have been unquestinably tugh. The islatin f the pandemic has led t many f us experiencing prlnged feelings f lneliness and seclusin (隐居), even lng after any restrictins were lifted. Pair this with the nging cst f living crisis, and peple are scializing with thers far less than befre. The way we interact with thers has becme dminated by digital channels, scial media exactly. While scial media have prven an incredibly useful tl, mst f Brits believe that ur grwing reliance n technlgy t interact has impacted the. frequency f in-persn scial interactin, leading t increased islatin.
Anther cntributing factr t scial islatin is physical distance. Cmbined with the demands f ur increasingly busy lives, the physical distance between family members ften prevents us frm keeping in cntact with ur lved nes as ften as we wuld like.
Talking f scial islatin, ur minds ften spring straight t the lder generatins. wh regularly find themselves left ut, wing t their declining physical capacity and a gap in digital literacy. Interestingly thugh, despite effrtlessly navigating the digital landscape, it is yunger generatins wh reprt feeling the mst islated, 41 per cent f peple aged frm 16 t 24 feeling the rise f scial media causing increased islatin.
While digital platfrms like Facebk serve as a means t send phts and life updates quickly and easily, the majrity f Brits still lve the tangible (可触摸的、可感知的) experience f receiving persnal pst. Cnsidered a dying art, it is clear snail mail, still has its place. Whether it be a letter, birthday card, r family newsletter, I have seen hw enriching the tuchable experience f sending and receiving persnal pst can be, t peple f all ages. Nurturing relatinships and fstering a prfund sense f being lved and better cnnected t lved nes, it is a vital tl that we shuld emply as a means t nt nly relieve the effects f scial islatin, but simply brighten smene else’s day.
    32. What des the wrd “lifted” underlined in the secnd paragraph refer t?
    A. Remved.B. Placed.C. Ignred.D. Raised.
    33. What is the attitude f the majrity f the British twards the impact f digital channels n scial cntact?
    A. Neutral.B. Indifferent.C. Favrable.D. Critical.
    34. What des the authr suggest readers d?
    A. Make smene else’s day.B. Turn t snail mail in the digital age.
    C. Bridge the gap in digital literacy.D. Fster a: sense f lving and being lved.
    35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
    A. The Hardship f the Past Few YearsB. Exchanging Tuchable Persnal Pst
    C. Scial Islatin in the Digital AgeD. Older Generatins’ Gap in Digital Landscape
