The first few mnths hme were the mst relaxing f my life. Every day I wake up t birds chirping, and sunlight cming in frm the windw-n traffic sunds r peple screaming n the streets. It sunds like a Disney mvie, but it’s s true! There is smething abut the air here-it’s clean. It smells gd. I can als see the Grand Mesa (the largest flat-tp muntain in the wrld) frm my bedrm windw. My wrk cmmute(通勤)is a fur-minute car ride. And n summer nights, my favrite thing t d is watch the sunset frm my prch because it’s the mst beautiful thing I have ever seen.
I’ve been hme fr almst three years nw, much t the surprise f my friends and family. Sme friends even made bets n hw lng “this” wuld last. S far, I’m winning. But since I’ve been hme my life has flurished. I realized that hme, fr me, is a place that inspires me. Because befre, in the city, I felt like I had t cmpete with everyne t get ahead. Many times, frgetting what I was “fighting” fr, I was cluded in cmpetitin and nt passin. I lst tuch with the ther parts f myself, never quite realizing that the quiet cuntry life prvided that t me.

When talking t babies, humans slw dwn their speech, raise their pitch(音高)and change the “clr” f their vice. This “baby talk”, as peple knw it, increases the baby’s attentin and facilitates language learning. Amng animals, mthers ften engage in child-directed vcalizatins(发声)t, but des this als imply vice changes? A team f scientists that included Smithsnian Trpical Research Institute (STRI) researchers explred whether child-directed cmmunicatin in bats resulted in vcalizatin changes.
They fcused n a bat called Saccpteryx bilineata, a cmmn Central and Suth American species with a remarkable vcal skill. During their first three mnths f life, as S. bilineata pups (幼崽) start experimenting with their “speech”, female and male adult bats respnd t them differently. Thrugh sund recrdings f their vcal interactins, the research team fund that mther bats “babble” as they interact with pups, which culd be interpreted as delightful feedback t pups during vcal practice.
Much like human “baby talk”, the child-directed vcalizatins f adult females presented a different “clr” and pitch than the calls directed twards ther adult bats. Male bats als cmmunicated with the pups, but in a way that seemed t carry the “vcal signature” f their scial grup. “Pup islatin calls sund mre similar t thse f males frm the same scial grup than t thse f ther males,” said Mirjam Knrnschild, STRI research assciate. “These results suggest that adult male vcalizatins may serve as guidance fr the develpment f grup signatures in pup calls.”
This is the first time that scientists describe a phenmenn that culd resemble “baby talk” amng bats, indicating that parent-ffspring cmmunicatin in bats is mre cmplex than previus thught and pening new avenues fr further research.
“These results shw that scial feedback is imprtant during vcal develpment, nt nly in humans but als in ther vcal-learning species like Saccpteryx bilineata,” said Mirjam. “I believe that bats are a very prmising species t investigate key shared features f language, such as the vcal learning ability, and that this study will inspire further studies in the bilinguistics field.”
28. What did the scientists aim t discver thrugh their research?
A. The vcal range f human vices.
B. The best way t attract kids’ attentin.
C. The effects f “baby talk” n vcalizatin.
D. The reasn fr bats’ gradual vice changes.
29. On what ccasin des a mther bat “babble”?
A. When she des nt feel secure.B. When she is searching fr fd.
C. When she has fd t feed her pups.D. When she is happy t interact with pups.
30. What can we learn abut bat pup calls frm Paragraph 3?
A. They have a higher pitch and changeable “clr”.
B. They sund mre similar t thse f their mms.
C. They are mainly determined by their adult males.
D. They are directed by female bats f the same grup.
31. Hw des Mirjam view the rle f scial feedback n vcal develpment?
A. Psitively.B. Dubtfully.C. Cautiusly.D. Critically.
D
D yu want t ensure yur child hits their expected develpmental milestnes? New UBC research suggests living in areas with high expsure t green space can help set them up fr success.
Fr the study, the researchers at UBC analyzed the develpmental scres f 27,372 children in Metr Vancuver wh attended kindergarten between 2005 and 2011.They estimated the amunt f green space arund each child’s residence frm birth t age five. They als assessed levels f traffic-related air pllutin and cmmunity nise.
The results highlight the fundamental imprtance f natural green spaces like street trees, parks and cmmunity gardens. “Mst f the children were ding well in their develpment, in terms f language skills, cgnitive(认知的)capacity, scializatin and ther utcmes,” says Ingrid Jarvis, a PhD candidate in the department f frest and cnservatin sciences at UBC. “But what’s interesting is that thse children living in a residential lcatin with mre vegetatin and richer natural envirnments shwed better verall develpment than their peers with less green space.”
Accrding t the researchers, the reasn fr this is partly green spaces’ ability t reduce the harmful effects f air pllutin and nise - envirnmental challenges that have been shwn t adversely(不利地)affect children’s health and develpment thrugh increased stress, sleep disturbances and central nervus system damage. “Few studies have investigated this pathway linking green space and develpmental utcmes amng children,” adds Jarvis.
The researchers assessed early childhd develpment using the Early Develpment Instrument (EDI), a survey cmpleted by kindergarten teachers fr each child. The tl measures a child’s ability t meet age-apprpriate develpmental expectatins.
“Mre research is needed, but ur findings suggest that urban planning effrts t increase green space in residential neighburhds and arund schls are beneficial fr early childhd develpment, with ptential health benefits thrughut life,” says the study’s senir authr Matilda Bsch. “Time in nature can benefit everyne, but if we want ur children t have a gd head start, it’s imprtant t prvide an enriching envirnment thrugh nature cntact.”
32. Which is a key factr in the researchers’ study?
A. The kids’ scres frm schl exams.
B. The average IQ scre f the subjects.
C. The green space where the kids lived.
D. The air pllutin level f the whle city.
33. What’s the message implied in Paragraph 4?
A. Air pllutin is largely t blame fr kids’ failures.
B. Kids living in a nisy area tend t feel mre stressed.
C. Pllutin harms kids’ nervus system mre than nise.
D. Greenspace is directly linked t kids’ mental develpment.
34. What des Matilda Bsch stress in the last paragraph?
A. The imprtance f nature in kids’ grwth.
B. The rle f research in scientific wrk.
C. The prper way f giving a gd start t kids.
D. The urgency f expanding greenspace in cities.
35. What culd be a suitable title fr the text?
