Adlescent chimpanzees share sme f the same risk-taking behavirs as human teens, but they may be less impulsive (冲动的) than human adlescents, accrding t research published in the Jurnal f Experimental Psychlgy: General by the American Psychlgical Assciatin.
“Adlescent chimpanzees are in sme sense facing the same psychlgical tempest that human teens are,” said lead researcher Alexandra Rsati, an assciate prfessr f psychlgy at the University f Michigan. “Our findings shw that several key features f human adlescent psychlgy are als seen in chimpanzees.”
The researchers cnducted tw tests invlving fd rewards with 40 wild-brn chimpanzees in the Republic f Cng. The chimpanzees vluntarily participated in the games in rder t receive fd treats.
In the first test, adlescent and adult chimpanzees culd chse between tw cntainers. One cntainer always cntained peanuts, a fd that chimpanzees smewhat like. The ther cntainer hid either a less favrite fd―a cucumber slice―r a favrite fd―a banana slice. The chimpanzees culd play it safe and get the peanuts, r take a chance fr sme banana at the risk f ending up with unappetizing cucumber. The chimpanzees’ reactins were recrded, and their saliva (唾液) samples were cllected fr analysis.
During several runds f the test, adlescent chimpanzees tk the risky ptin mre ften than adult chimpanzees, but adlescents and adults had similar negative reactins when they received cucumber.
The secnd test examined delayed satisfactin where chimpanzees culd receive ne banana slice immediately r wait fr ne minute t receive three slices. Bth adlescent and adult chimpanzees chse the greater delayed reward at a similar rate. Human teens tend t be mre impulsive than adults s they wuld be mre likely t take the immediate reward. “Previus research indicates that chimpanzees are quite patient cmpared with ther animals, and ur study shws that their ability t delay satisfactin is already mature at a fairly yung age, unlike in humans,” Rsati said. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
Hwever, adlescent chimpanzees weren’t happy abut waiting fr the extra banana slices and they shwed greater anger during the ne-minute delay than adult chimpanzees. “Risk-taking behavir in bth adlescent chimpanzees and humans appears t be bilgically rted, but increases in impulsive behavir may be specific t human teens,” Rsati said.
24. Which f the fllwing best explains the underlined wrd “tempest” in paragraph 2?
A. Illness. B. Training. C. Recgnitin. D. Struggle.
25. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut cncerning the test?
A. Its ptential risks. B. Its research results.
C. Its experiment prcess. D. Its first-stage preparatins.
26. What did the first test find?
A. Adult chimpanzees tended t take n mre challenging tasks.
B. Adlescent chimpanzees stayed calm when eating less favrite fds.
C. Adlescent chimpanzees were mre likely t take risks than adult nes.
D. Adult chimpanzees weren’t willing t participate in games with fd treats.
27. What can we learn abut chimpanzees’ ability t delay satisfactin?
A. It leads t mre risk-taking behavir. B. It develps earlier than that f humans.
C. It differs greatly in different age grups. D. It is mainly assciated with the waiting time.

Cnsumers increasingly use smartwatches and ther wearable devices t measure their heart rates and rhythm during exercise and fr verall health mnitring. Hwever, thse measurements may be less accurate in peple with darker skin tnes (肤色), accrding t a study.
The findings are based n a systematic review f 10 previusly published studies invlving a ttal f 469 participants. The study is the first t pl data frm many studies t specifically examine hw skin tnes may affect the accuracy f heart data in wearables. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
After screening 622 scientific papers, the researchers identified 10 studies that reprted the heart rate and rhythm data fr cnsumer wearable technlgy accrding t a participant’s skin tne. Of thse studies, they fund that heart rate measurements were significantly less accurate in darker-skinned individuals cmpared with either lighter-skinned individuals r measurements frm prven devices, such as chest strap mnitrs r electrcardigrams (心电图). One study reprted that althugh there was n difference in heart rate accuracy, wearable devices recrded significantly fewer data pints fr peple with darker skin.
Mst wearables detect the heart rate and rhythm by aiming a beam f light at the wrist and then detecting hw much light is absrbed. Greater light absrptin indicates a greater vlume f bld flwing thrugh the veins (静脉) under the skin. The study results suggest that this signaling prcess might nt wrk well in darker skin that cntains mre melanin (黑色素), which absrbs light. In additin t the rising use f wearables t mnitr physical activity and sleep patterns, interest in the use f cnsumer wearables fr medical research and even early detectin f heart prblems has increased in recent years.
The study emphasizes the imprtance f ensuring that technlgy meets the needs f diverse ppulatins, especially when it’s intended t imprve health. “It’s urgent t explre alternative ptins t cllect reliable data frm all users. There is sme evidence t suggest that certain light, particularly green light, is mre accurate in peple acrss all skin tnes,” Daniel Kerber, the study’s c-lead authr, said.
28. Hw did researchers cnduct research?
A. They surveyed wearable device users. B. They tk advantage f existing data.
C. They cmmunicated with prfessinals. D. They tested wearable devices n the market.
29. Hw d mst wearables detect users’ heart rates?
A. By detecting melanin levels in users’ skin.
B. By bserving users’ breathing rates and bld pressure.
C. By measuring the speed f the bld flw in users’ veins.
D. By detecting the amunt f light absrbed by users’ wrists.
30. Which f the fllwing statements abut wearables may Daniel Kerber agree with?
A. They require imprvement. B. They face severe cmpetitin.
C. They are a duble-edged swrd. D. They are a kind f marketing trick.
31. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Hw is yur heart rate detected prperly?
B. Hw accurate is the heart data frm yur smartwatch?
C. What challenge des future wearable technlgy face?
D. Hw may skin tnes affect the accuracy f heart data in wearables?
D
Remember Malclm Gladwell’s famus “10,000-hur rule” frm his bk Outliers? It prpsed that achieving mastery in any field required rughly 10,000 hurs f practice, emphasizing the imprtance f early prfessinalizatin and intensive practice fr becming an elite (精英) in a particular field.
This apprach, knwn as deliberate practice, encurages setting gals frm a yung age, investing time, and specializing in a specific field. On paper, it sunds like the surefire (必定成功的) path t success, but when we deeply study the lives f elite athletes, musicians, and schlars, we find a different stry.
In reality, many individuals wh have risen t the tp f their respective fields tk a mre diverse and circuitus (曲折的) rute. They ften explred a wide range f activities, gained a brad skill set, and nly specialized at a later stage in life. Studies have shwn that an apprach called the “sampling perid” is ften mre effective fr achieving success. During this phase, individuals try varius activities, gain diverse skills, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and nly chse a field t specialize in nce they have a clearer understanding f their passins and abilities.
Cnsider the jurney f Rger Federer, ne f the greatest tennis players f all time. At the age f 6, he dabbled (涉足) in rugby, skiing, and wrestling, nly returning t tennis later. The trial perid benefited him nt just because he fund his true passin but als because his experiences in varius sprts enriched his tennis game with a unique set f skills. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
Setting strict gals fr children frm a yung age, driven by the deliberate practice mdel, may nt be the ideal path t success. The cncept f the “sampling perid” ffers a mre flexible and effective apprach. It allws individuals t explre their interests, gain diverse skills, and discver their true passins.
In a wrld marked by cnstant change and cmplexity, the ability t draw frm a range f experiences and knwledge is a critical skill fr achieving excellence and innvatin. S, perhaps it’s time t recnsider the way we nurture the talents and ambitins f the next generatin.
32. What is the key t becming elite in a field accrding t the bk Outliers?
A. The prfessinal instructin. B. The crrect practice methd.
C. Lng and cntinuus practice. D. The determinatin t try different activities.
33. What d many peple wh have excelled in their fields share accrding t paragraph 3?
A. They all have strng determinatin t succeed.
B. They all achieved success in their fields at an ld age.
C. They all tried many things befre fcusing n their fields.
D. They all have been passinate abut their careers frm an early age.
34. Why is Rger Federer mentined in paragraph 5?
A. T prpse a spirit. B. T make a cmparisn.
C. T prvide a suggestin. D. T serve as an example.
35. What can be learned frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. Experience is mre imprtant than success.
B. Parents shuld nt set gals fr their kids at an early age.
C. It is never t late t start fllwing yur passin.
D. Children shuld be taught abut the cmplexity f the wrld.

Mst f us have a map f the wrld in ur mind that we use any time we think abut places. 36 In fact, many f the maps in ur heads share the same errrs, sme f which are quite large and surprisingly resistant t crrectin.
Fr example, we all believe that Suth America is just suth f Nrth America, f curse. But yu may be surprised by the fact that virtually the entire Suth American cntinent is east f Flrida. There are lts f pssible reasns fr gegraphical miscnceptins like this ne, says cartgrapher (地图绘制员) Jhn Nelsn. 37 After all it’s nt called Sutheast America. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
Eurpe is als ften placed much farther suth n mental maps than it really is. But it actually lines up better with Canada. 38 Western Eurpe is relatively warm fr its latitude (纬度) thanks t the Gulf Stream which brings warmer water frm the Gulf f Mexic acrss the Atlantic. The warmer temperatures are mre similar t the climate f the lwer 48 states than Canada’s.
39 We als have miscnceptins abut the relative size f things. This may be due in part t the nature f 2D maps. Flattening a 3D glbe nt a flat surface isn’t pssible withut sme distrtin (变形). This is especially bvius fr maps that use certain prjectins.
Mercatr maps distrt the shape and relative size f cntinents, particularly near the ples. This is why Greenland appears t be similar in size t all f Suth America n Mercatr maps. 40
A. Lcatins aren’t the nly way ur mental maps can be wrng.
B. But these mental maps aren’t necessarily dependable.
C. Nelsn says that climate might play a rle in this misunderstanding.
D. In fact, Suth America is mre than eight times larger than Greenland.
E. He believes the misplaced Americas may be partly a result f their names.
F. Hwever, ur physical experience f the wrld may cme int play as well.
G. Nne f these gegraphic miscnceptins wuld be surprising fr a student.

Debra, a five-year-ld cusin f mine, ften annyed me ... I hated it and never taught her t dance ... Debra desired t jin us, but what culd a five-year-ld kid cntribute t ur cnversatins? ... I left the table where we were sitting, leaving behind my mther, my grandmther and Debra 等信息可 知,作者不喜欢和 Debra 玩,嫌她烦; 材料中的 She tld me, “Debra has been badly hurt. My interest in the language was due t the passin f ur Arabic lecturer and as the curse prgressed, my interest in the culture als grew with it. I cnsidered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided n Cair due t its energetic cultural scene.
Hwever, in the city, we faced sme challenges, including difficulties finding a htel and accmmdatin as we were a grup f unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shck was intense fr sme f us. One member f ur grup returned hme within the first week. Luckily I became accustmed t the life in Cair gradually.
The biggest challenge f learning Arabic is the discnnectin between the written and the spken frms.
Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absrbing myself in the culture and getting t knw the lcals and even negtiating at a lcal market. Highlights were being invited t a traditinal Arabic meal at ne f the lcals’ hme and being able t cnfidently cmmunicate.
