During the Hallween seasn, many peple visit pumpkin (南瓜) fields r carve pumpkins. But paddle (用桨划) a 1,000-pund pumpkin in a race? On Octber 22 in Oregn, paddlers in Hallween clthes did just that.
The West Cast Giant Pumpkin Regatta tk place n the lake in Tualatin, a small city utside Prtland. Back in 2004, a club called the Pacific Giant Vegetable Grwers (PGVG) came up with the idea fr the event. The PGVG wanted t alter their large pumpkins int bats and paddle them. They asked the city f Tualatin if they culd use the lake fr a party.
The first year, abut 100 peple shwed up. Nw, abut 20,000 cme t watch the races. “It’s just a gd time t finally have sme fun with these pumpkins that we’ve spent cuntless hurs all year lng trying t grw,” said Jim Sherwd, a champin pumpkin grwer, wh is ne f the Regatta’s funders and rganizers.
The PGVG prvides pumpkins fr the Regatta’s five races. This year, paddlers came frm acrss the cuntry and frm as far away as France and Japan. “Surprisingly, it’s n a lt f peple’s wish list t paddle a pumpkin,” said Heidi Marx, the event’s directr fr the city f Tualatin.
Just befre the races began, the grwers emptied the pumpkins. The paddlers dressed in hliday clthing jumped in, and the first race started.
Gary Kristensen frm Happy Valley, Oregn, wn the first race. He was dressed as the mvie character Mrs. Dubtfire. It was Kristensen’s furth year winning a pumpkin race. “Once everybdy thinks yu will win, it starts t give yu a little bit f pressure,” he said. “Frtunately, my pumpkin was pretty fast.”
Fr the less cmpetitive players, the Regatta was all abut fun. “The best part is just watching all the families enjying the day.” Marx, a player, said. Peple are ging t remember it fr a lng time.”

Atlantic puffins lk and walk similarly t penguins. A wildlife rganizatin says the ppulatin f the yung birds n islands f the cast f Maine fell a lt in 2021. But last year, abut tw-thirds f puffins in the area prduced yung. While the numbers did nt reach that same level this year, the birds still had a better year than in 2021.
The main reasn fr the falling numbers in 2021 was a drp in the ppulatin f small fish puffins feed n. Puffin grups suffered ne f the lwest numbers f yung birds in many years. Only abut ne-quarter f the birds were able t raise yung.
Envirnmental grups have cnnected the smaller fish ppulatins in the area t higher cean temperatures. The Gulf f Maine, which has puffin grups n its islands, is warming faster than mst f the wrld’s ceans. In recent years, it has been especially warm and a lcal climate rganizatin has said this summer appears t have been “still unusually warm”.
Maine’s puffins are the nly breeding (繁殖) Atlantic puffins in the United States. Wrldwide, the species lives in the Nrth Atlantic frm Maine and Canada t Eurpe. Other cuntries with large puffin ppulatins, such as Iceland, have als seen their bird ppulatins drp.
