Each US university and cllege sets its wn admissin standards and decides which applicants meet thse standards. But the steps are the same fr each. Here are sme f the majr steps yu will fllw:
    Timing
Universities and clleges in the US usually ffer tw main academic terms: Spring terms run frm January t May and fall terms run frm mid-August r September t December. While each US university and cllege will have different dates fr applying t prgrams, applicatin submissins are usually pen and accepted 10 mnths befre the prgram starts.
    Applicatin
Each institutin has its wn applicatin frm, and all US universities which accept internatinal students give yu the ptin t apply nline. Keep in mind that almst all US institutins have an applicatin fee.
    Take admissins tests
Students applying t universities and clleges in the US must take certain examinatins (SAT, ACT, GMAT, etc.) that measure achievement. Internatinal students must als take a test that measures English language prficiency. These tests are given at test centers arund the wrld. They are “standardized", s that students take the same test at every test center. Yur scres give the admissins ffice a unifrm internatinal standard fr measuring yur ability in cmparisn with ther students.
    Receive acceptance letters
After the applicatin deadline, yu will begin receiving letters frm yur chsen schls. Sme universities infrm candidates f their acceptance sn after their dcuments have arrived in the admissins ffice; this is called “rlling admissins". Then five years after stepping back frm academia,I felt ready t re-enter mre fully. Because I had been able t Keep my hand in during my time away, the prspect was much less daunting than it wuld have been therwise. I ended up landing a lecturer psitin that allwed me t slwly ease back in, 1cusing n teaching and schlarship with research taking a back seat. And when, 4 years n, a sen1r lectureship psitin came up in the very grup I had left a decade earlier, the timing was right. With bth f my children in "big schl," I was ready t really put my ft dwn n the career acceleratr. I gt the jb.
Nw, 6 mnths int my new rle, I am happy t be right where it all began, with invlvement in s many interesting prjects. But what truly made the difference fr me was the ffer f what I needed during that time away. I hpe mre institutins and Pls can cme up with creative prvisins fr thse in their wrkfrce wh dn't want t give up their careers but want-r need-t take extended perids f leave. And t thse wh are taking such breaks, r cnsidering it, knw that returning is pssible. Abve all, n bth sides: Please d nt discunt extended leavers. We have a lt t ffer-if we are given the chance.

Phnics, which invlves sunding ut wrds syllable(音节) by syllable, is the best way t teach children t read. But in many classrms, this can be a dirty wrd. S much s that sme
teachers have had t take phnics teaching materials secretly int the classrm. Mst American children are taught t read in a way that study after study has fund t be wrng.
The cnsequences f this are striking. Less than half f all American adults were efficient readers in 2017.American furth graders rank 15th n the Prgress in Internatinal Literacy Study, an internatinal exam.
America is stuck in a debate abut teaching children t read that has been ging n fr decades. Sme advcate teaching symbl sund relatinships (the sund k can be spelled as c, k, ck, r ch) knwn as phnics Others supprt an immersive apprach (using pictures f cat t learn the wrd cat), knwn as “whle language”. Mst teachers tday, almst three ut f fur accrding t a survey by EdWeek Research Centre in 2019, use a mix f the tw methds called “balanced literacy”.
“A little phnics is far frm enugh.” says Tenette Smith, executive directr f elementary educatin and reding at Mississippi’s educatin department. “It has t be systematic and explicitly taught.”
Mississippi, ften behind in scial plicy, has set an example here. In a state nce blamed fr its lw reading scres, the Mississippi state legislature passed new literacy standards in 2013.Since then Mississippi has seen remarkable gains., Its furth graders have mved frm 49th (ut f 50 states) t 20th n the Natinal assessment f Educatinal Prgress, a natinwide exam.
Mississippi’s success is attributed t applicatin f reading methds supprted by a bdy f research knwn as the science f reading. In 1997 experts frm the Department f Educatin ended the “reading war” and summed up the evidence. They fund that phnics, alng with explicit instructin in phnemic (音位的) awareness, fluency and cmprehensin, wrked best.
Yet ver tw decades n, “balanced literacy” is still being taught in classrms. But advances in statistics and brain imaging have disprved the whle-language methd. T the teacher wh is an efficient reader, literacy seem like a natural prcess that requires educated guessing, rather than the deliberate prcess emphasized by phnics. Teachers can imagine that they learned t read thrugh smsis(潜移默化) when they were children. Withut prper training, they bring this t classrms.
28.What d we learn abut phnics in many American classrms?
    A. It is ill reputed.B. It is mstly misapplied.
    C. It is ttally ignred.D. It is seemingly cntradictry.
    29. What has America been witnessing?
A.A burning passin fr imprving teaching methds.
B.A lasting debate ver hw t teach children t read.
    C. An increasing cncern with children's inadequacy in literacy.
D.A frceful advcacy f a cmbined methd fr teaching reading.
    30. What's Tenette Smith's attitude twards “balanced literacy”?
    A. Tlerant. B. Enthusiastic. C. Unclear. D. Disapprving.
    31.Accrding t the authr what cntributed t Mississippi's success?
    A. Fcusing n the natural prcess rather than deliberate training.
    B. Obtaining supprt frm ther states t upgrade teaching methds.
    C. Adpting scientifically grunded appraches t teaching reading.
    D. Placing sufficient emphasis upn bth fluency and cmprehensin.

Mark Temple, a medical mlecular (分子的) bilgist, used t spend a lt f time in his lab researching new drugs fr cancer treatments. He wuld extract DNA frm cells and then add a drug t see where it was binding (结合) alng the chemical sequence(序列). Befre he intrduced the drug, he’d lk at DNA cmbinatin n a screen t see what might wrk best fr the experiment, but the visual readut f the sequences was ften unimaginably large.
S Temple wndered if there was an easier way t detect favrable patterns. I realized I wanted t hear the sequence,” says Temple, wh is als a musician. He started his wn system f assigning ntes t the different elements f DNA — human DNA is made f fur distinct bases, s it was easy t start ff with fur ntes — and made a little tune ut f his materials. This trick indeed helped him better spt patterns in the sequences, which allwed him t make better chices abut which DNA cmbinatins t use.
Temple isn’t the first persn t turn scientific data int sund. In the past 40 years, researchers have gne frm explring this trick as a fun way t spt patterns in their studies t
using it as a guide t discvery. And the scientific cmmunity has cme t realize that there’s sme lng-term value in this type f wrk. Temple, wh frm that first experiment has created his wn algrithmic sftware t turn data int sund, believes the resulting music can be used t imprve research and science cmmunicatin.
S Temple decided t add layers f sund t make the snificatin (可听化) int sngs. He sees a clear difference between “snificatin” and “musificatin”. Using sund t represent data is scientific, but very different frm using creative input t make sngs. The musical ntes frm DNA may be meldic t the human ear, but they dn't sund like a sng yu'd listen t n the radi. S when he tried t snify the virus, he added layers f drums and guitar, and had sme musician friends add their wn music t turn the virus int a full-blwn pst-rck sng.
Temple sees this wrk as an effective cmmunicatin tl that will help a general audience understand cmplex systems in bilgy. He has perfrmed his sngs in public at cncert halls in Australia.
    32. What is Mark Temple's purpse in turning DNA data int sund?
    A. T help him fight bredm.B. T develp his creative ability.
    C. T make his drug mre pwerful.D. T aid the prcess f his experiments.
    33. What can we learn abut Temple's system?
    A. Its effect remains t be seen.B. It failed t wrk as expected.
    C. It is t cmplicated t perate.D. It has prduced satisfying results.
34.Why did Temple try t make the virus sund like real music when snifying it?
    A. T get rid f public fear f the virus.
    B. T shw h1s talent in prducing music.
    C. T facilitate peple s understanding f science.
    D. T remind peple r the re r Science in art creatin.
    35. What des the text mainly talk abut?
    A. Why scientists are turning mlecules int music.
    B. Hw scientists help the public understand science.
    C. Why music can be the best way t present science.
    D. Hw music helps scientists cnduct their research.
