During the 2020-2021 schl year, due t a special event, I was ne f tw fully remte furth-grade teachers in my schl. We each taught the required disciplines: English language arts, math, scial studies, and science. Given the reduced distributin time n camera with students, the flexibility f fcusing n additinal tpics was almst impssible. Yet, while I was virtually teaching a life sciences unit, a “teachable mment” n news literacy came up.
The skill being taught was suppsed t be t cmpare and cntrast, a requirement in fictin and nnfictin texts — a lessn that all literacy educatrs are familiar with and have tls in their tlbxes t address. My students were intrigued by a sidebar (侧边栏) that said the crabs have a plant-based diet, eating such items as leaves, fruits, and flwers. One f the kids — an experienced scial media user — then said smething wild: crabs eat their babies.
They all perked up (活跃起来). Suddenly it seemed everyne was interested in the lessn. I hadn’t planned n teaching news literacy skills, but it became clear that we needed t take that detur (绕道而行). It was almst time fr a break, s I asked my students t see if they culd figure ut what red crabs eat.
When we returned, we started a list f what we’d fund. The first few students said it was true: red crabs d eat their babies. One especially thughtful student fund a vide with ver 600,000 views that seemed t crrbrate the ntin that crabs eat their babies. During the break, hwever, I fund a website disagreeing with the exact vide my student had shared. Like s much misinfrmatin, there was sme truth t the vide, but it was highly misleading.
Rather than teach anther lessn n cmparing and cntrasting, I engaged my students in a discussin abut surcing and hw t knw what t trust. We fcused n famus news rganizatins and hw t spt signs f bias. We engaged in “lateral reading”: a methd f ging t ther sites t learn abut thse surces that we weren’t sure abut.

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled t lift my head ut f the water. Inch by inch, my tired bdy reached fr the end f the pl.
The extent f my swimming career was purely recreatinal, while the cmpetitive swimmers nearby thught nthing f the seemingly simple task f a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself t finish what I had started, I culd nly think: why nt take the easy way ut?
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first jb applicatin at a lcal pl. Overqualified, I was hired n the spt. Hwever, the tasks were bring: helping cnfused visitrs and measuring the height f children befre they went dwn the slide, thse srts f things. I was capable f mre.
S a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was nt cmpletely helpless in a pl. Midway thrugh, the manager administering the test remarked, “This lks really easy fr yu. Why aren't yu applying t becme a guard?"
“The thught hadn't crssed my mind."
“Well lifeguarding demands mre respnsibility, strength and respect. Thus the psitin pays $2 mre per hur. Yur swimming skills are strng enugh. All yu need t d is cmplete a certificatin class.”
Inside I was unsure f myself, but his wrds inspired me-Yu never knw what yu are capable f until yu frce yurself t d it.
Sn I passed the swim test. All left was t practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and prcedures fr different land and water-based emergencies.
Wrk started sn. A well- intentined yet anxius feeling in me sn passed. Days, weeks, and mnths went by withut incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had s carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.
Tday appeared t be anther uneventful day. Hwever, shrtly after the ther guards signaled t the children t exit the pl, I nticed ne by was still in the middle while the thers had climbed up.
