    Kartik Pingle, 16, and Jasmine Wright. 18, wh bth attend schls in Massachusetts, participated in the Student Research Mentring Prgram (SRMP). With the help f Tansu Daylan, an MIT dctr fr Astrphysics and Space Research, the students studied and analyzed data frm the Transiting Explanct Survey Satellite (TESS). Tgether they fcused n Tess Object f Interest (TOI) 1233, a nearby, bright sun-like star and here they fund fur planets rtating(旋转)arund the star. “We were lking t see changes in light ver time,” Pingle explained, “the idea is that if the planet transits the star, r passes in frnt f it, it wuld peridically cver up the star and decrease its brightness.”
    While studying 1233, Pingle and Wright had at least hped t find ne planet but were verwhelmed with jy when a ttal f fur were sptted. “I was very excited and very shcked.” Wright said. “We knew this was the gal f Daylan’s research, but t actually find a multi-planetary system, and be part f the discvering team, was really cl.” Three f the newly discvered planets are cnsidered as “sub-Neptunes”, which are gaseus, but smaller than the Neptune that lives in ur slar system. While bserving the planets, the team determined each ne cmpletes their rbit arund 1233 every six t 19.5 days. Hwever, the furth planet is called a “super-Earth” fr its large size and rckiness this ne rbits arund the star in just under fur days.
