My mther is nw 90. Thankfully, she is blessed with gd health.
I still remember ten years ag when she turned 80, she surprised my brther and me with what she described as “independent birthday”.
One day she infrmed us she'd bked a seven-night trip t Turkey. Alne. Because she had never been. Of curse, that was ridiculus. There was n way my brther and I culd allw that. A weak, little ld lady wandering the streets f Istanbul n her wn, nt speaking a wrd f Turkish, with n knwledge f the laws and custms f the land—it was ut f the questin!

As it turned ut, she had barely spent any time alne, after hiring a taxi driver t shw her arund Istanbul fr sme days. He tk her t all the sites—the markets, churches and restaurants. He intrduced her t a blanket seller, “a lvely fellw,” and she bught sme blankets. The seller tk her address details and prmised t ship them t Canada. They wuld be arriving in three r fur weeks. My mther beamed (眉开眼笑) as she tld this stry. The blanket seller and my mther apparently built a friendship and she tld him t drp by if he were ever in Canada.
T ur great shck, her blankets did arrive sme weeks later, alng with a lvely nte frm the seller Mustafa. T ur even greater surprise, the fllwing year Mustafa himself arrived in Canada. He called ur mther t infrm her he was in Ottawa.
“I invited him ver and he came by fr a cup f tea. They drink a lt f tea in Turkey,” my mther tld my hrrified brther and me.
Her trip f independence seems t be thughtfully based n a realizatin that life is t be lived. It reminded me f the line frm the mvie The Shawshank Redemptin: “Get busy living r get busy dying.”
