Frrest Fenn, the man wh started the hunt, lives in Santa Fe. He was a pilt in the Vietnam War and later accumulated(积累) his wealth as a dealer in art and antiques. Fenn was diagnsed(诊断) with cancer in 1988 and had planned t die peacefully in the wds with his treasure. But when his cancer became less serius, he changed his plan, eventually writing the pem that described his dream resting place, which is where he hid the treasure.
