But they had t clse their drs fr the night. “One cld winter night, I watched as my friends walked ff int the darkness t a wet, cld camp, while we went hme t a warm bed,” Linda said, “I realized I had t d smething.”
She had an idea t create a village f tiny huses t make sure n ne slept utside n her watch! Linda started fundraising. She began by appealing t her fellw estate agents in the area befre branching ut int lcal businesses.
Using these dnatins, Linda purchased a nearby abandned area that already had the infrastructure in place. By February 2019, they’d built 31 tiny hmes fr their Eden Village and fund residents fr each ne. All the residents must be gd neighbrs in rder t stay in the village, and they certainly are! Linda was happy when she learned that the village actually increased lcal prperty values rather than lwering them as sme peple had feared.
Linda hasn’t stpped wrking since Eden Village began. A secnd village pened in the fall f 2020, and there’s a third lcatin in the wrks as well! She hpes t have five villages acrss Springfield within the next five years, helping mre than 200 hmeless peple get ff the streets and int a new life.
T this day, Linda firmly believes that there are a millin reasns smene can becme hmeless, but each f them can be slved with lve and cmmunity invlvement.

A new study says that mre than half the wrld’s cean area is “becming greener,” and the trend is cnnected t human-caused glbal warming.
It’s nt clear what is driving the greening. In sme places, it culd indicate changes in the amunt f planktn r ther rganic material flating in the water. Planktn are a crnerstne f the cean fd chain, and these kinds f shifts culd have ripple effects thrughut the entire marine ecsystem.
The study, published n Wednesday in the jurnal Nature, examines 20 years f satellite data measuring light reflected at the surface f the water all acrss the glbe, subtle changes that aren’t necessarily visible t the naked eye. The research finds that 56 percent f the wrld’s ceans are shifting in clr — and n the whle, they’re grwing greener. The trend is especially strng in the lwer latitudes, including the subtrpics and trpics.
The researchers then used a cmputer mdel t find ut whether climate change was playing a part. They cnducted ne set f simulatins representing the ceans under a strng climate change scenari, and then cmpared them with a secnd set f simulatins imagining a wrld in which climate change didn’t exist. The mdel suggests that rising glbal temperatures are t blame.
The exact reasns still require sme scientific digging. While climate change seems t be the culprit, the study als indicates that rising cean temperatures in and f themselves aren’t driving the greening.
There are plenty f ther ways glbal warming is affecting the wrld’s ceans, by changing the structure and flw f certain currents, fr instance. These kinds f changes can affect the grwth f phytplanktn and ther factrs that might be cntributing t the greening.
The findings weren’t a surprise t the researchers. They’re cnsistent with the way researchers expect the glbal ceans t change as the wrld keeps n warming.
“I’ve been running simulatins that have been telling me fr years that these changes in cean clr are ging t happen,” study c-authr Stephanie Dutkiewicz, a senir research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy, said in a statement. “T actually see it happening fr real is n unexpected, but frightening.”
    28. What is the main tpic f the study mentined in the text?
    A. Changes in the clr f the wrld’s ceans.
    B. The rle f planktn in the cean fd chain.
    C. The impact f climate change n cean ecsystems.
    D. The effects f glbal warming n cean temperatures.
    29. What des the underlined wrd “culprit” in paragraph 5 mean?

    B. An animal that causes damage r harm.
    C. A substance that causes negative effects.
    D. A thing r fact that is respnsible fr a prblem.
    30. What is the researchers’ reactin t the findings?
    A. They are unsurprised. B. They are emtinal.
    C. They are indifferent. D. They are unsure.
    31. What des the study suggest abut the future f the ceans?
    A. They will becme smaller. B. They will becme mre plluted.
    C. They will cntinue t change clrs. D. They will becme less diverse.
    D
We have lng been attracted by quick slutins that culd increase ur intelligence. Tday, peple’s hpes lie in brain training apps, sme f which claim t result in smarter minds”. But is this quick slutins all that it is said t be?
There are plenty f brain training apps, but they all share the same characteristics: they turn mental exercises like simple arithmetic, memry tests and lgic and pattern-matching prblems int quick games. The mre yu play these mini-games, the smarter yu will get — r s sme apps tell us. It is really a big prmise.
Many f the apps say they are backed by “science”, a claim I fund surprising as a frmer neurscientist. The cncept that increasing intelligence wuld be as simple as practicing a few mini-games every day ges against what we have discvered abut hw humans think and learn.
After surveying a diverse spread f thusands f users acrss wide variety f apps, researchers at Western University in Canada discvered that “brain training has n appreciable effect n cgnitive functining in the ‘real wrld’, even after extensive training perids”. The psitive effects that have been fund are limited t the very specific mini-games and tasks that users are trained n, such as the ability t memrize lists f wrds r numbers, r perfrm mental arithmetic, with little benefit t ther skills.
If yu are expecting them t imprve yur ability t write nvel r cnstruct a cmplex spreadsheet, I am afraid yu will want t lk elsewhere.
Puzzle vide games such as “Baba Is Yu” and “Return the Obra Dinn” see players apply their skill at lgic, memry and cncentratin in a far mre cmplex way than any brain training mini-game.
    32. What des the authr say abut brain training apps?
    A. They have scientific supprt. B. They wrk in the frm f games.
    C. They require prblem-slving skills.D. They are based n cmplex arithmetic.
    33. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A. Supprting evidence fr sme brain training apps.
    B. A detailed descriptin f sme brain training apps.
    C. A further explanatin f the use f sme brain training apps.
    D. Questining the exaggerated effects f sme brain training apps.
    34. Which best describes the effects that brain training apps have n memry?
    A. Limited. B. Tremendus. C. Damaging. D. Far-reaching.
    35. Where is the text prbably taken frm?
    A. A strybk. B. A diary. C. A magazine. D. A bigraphy.
