Fxes in suthern England have apparently develped a taste fr autmbiles. Instead f wanting t drive them, thugh, they’re eating vital cmpnents. The damage hasn’t just cst U.K. drivers thusands in repair bills. The fxes have als caused dangerus accidents when peple have taken t the rads withut realizing their brakes n lnger wrk.
Already in 2009, plice in the suthern cunty f Kent warned drivers t check their cars’ wires and test their brakes befre driving. Indeed, fr sme reasn, the fxes seem t find brake lines particularly attractive. With their cars’ cables brken, drivers have had t get their vehicles fixed. That has resulted in ccasinally sky-high bills. The damage has als resulted in accidents. Frtunately, we didn’t find any casualties linked t the fxes, but faulty brakes and cables cnnected t the animals have been behind crashes and stranded (抛锚) vehicles.
T stp the greedy beasts, mtrists have tried all manners f techniques. Yet, the mst effective way t keep the fxes away they’ve discvered is wrapping their cars in chicken wire. It’s a truble t cnstantly have t take the wire ff and put it back n, nt t mentin the ptential scrapes and scratches n the paint. But suppse it’s better than having t get yur brake lines repaired — again.
But why are the fxes s crazy abut biting car cables? Nbdy can say fr sure, but it’s mst likely a sum f multiple causes. First f all, the insulatin materials (绝缘材料) n car cables in the U.K. were changed frm petrleum-based materials t sy-derived substances sme 15 years ag. Rdents (啮齿动物), frm rats t squirrels, have been attracted t the vegetable-based catings and it culd be that fxes find them delicius as well. Anther reasn prbably lies in England’s disappearing wdlands. With fewer wild places left, the fxes are increasingly driven twards cities t find fd. And then there’s the issue f peple feeding them.
“Flish peple have been feeding fxes and treating them as pets,” said animal psychlgist Dr. Rger Mugfrd. “They nrmally avid humans and anything’s been tuched by humans but if they are getting fd given t them, that’s changed.” If sme drivers have been feeding fxes. they’ve brught this prblem n themselves. Unfrtunately, thse same fxes will then prceed t haunt the entire neighbrhd
46. What have the fxes in suthern England dne?
A. They have develped a gd taste.
B. They have eaten drivers’ repair bills.
C. They have damaged sme parts f the vehicles.
D. They have hit cars and caused sme accidents.

C. Fxes biting car cables have caused a number f rllver accidents and deaths.
D. Drivers in sme areas were warned years ag abut the damage caused by fxes.

49. Which f the fllwing might NOT be a cause fxes like t chew n car cables?

50. What is the authr’s attitude twards feeding fxes?

D
There is much debate nwadays as t what makes up a healthy diet. Fr example, scientists have insisted fr years that a big enemy f health is fatty fd. Hwever, there is increasing evidence that the real driver f pr health is nt s much fatty fd, as it is sugar. In America, peple wh receive 25% f their daily calries r mre thrugh sugar are twice as likely t die frm heart disease than peple wh receive less than 10% a day. The American Heart Assciatin recmmends that we limit urselves t Tess than 100 — 150 calries a day frm sugar, which is less than what is usually cntained in ne can f sweet drink r in a single candy bar. Beynd this, yu can keep healthy by cnsuming different categries f fresh fds, especially fruit and vegetables, which are full f vitamins and fibre, rather than prcessed fds. Prcessed fds ften cntain less nutritin, and have higher quantities f sugar, salt, and fat than fresh ingredients (原料). Besides this, it is als imprtant t have sme meat, beans, r dairy prducts (乳制品) in yur diet, as they prvide the necessary prtein fr strng bnes and muscle grwth. As with everything in life, mderatin (适度) is key. The ideal diet is a balanced ne, withut t much r t little f anyne thing.
Finally, a fundamental key t healthy eating is t eat slwly. It takes abut twenty minutes frm the time yu start eating fr yur brain t tell yur bdy that yu are full. What this means is that peple wh chew t quickly end up eating t much fd because they still feel hungry. Eating slwly als allws yur bdy t digest yur fd better, and will allw yu t enjy yur fd mre. In additin, studies shw that cnsistent eating habits, fr example, taking three meals a day at the same time each day, are better fr ur health. It is als better t eat a mdest amunt f fd each time, rather than t eat a lt in ne meal, and then a little in the next.
There is n ne trick t healthy eating. Rather, healthy eating starts with having a healthy attitude twards fd. One questin yu can ask yurself is, “D I eat t live, r live t eat?” If yu are using fd mstly fr nutritin, then yu are n the right track with yur diet. Hwever, if fd has becme the centre f yur life, yu might be n the rad t bad health. It is up t yu t decide hw yu want t live, and t make the right decisins abut yur diet.

As yu knw, I’ve been in China fr arund a mnth nw. I want t study in a lcal university, which is why I tk thse after-schl Chinese classes. I decided n China because it’s a fast-develping cuntry with trade links all ver the wrld. Studying here culd be useful in finding a gd jb in trade r business. What’s mre, Chinese culture is really interesting, s chsing t cme here was a n-brainer fr me! Having said that, China isn’t like I thught it might be. I thught it wuld be quite ld and traditinal, but in many ways, the cities are just as mdern as back hme in Vancuver, nly with lts mre peple! There’s s much mre fd t try, t, and it’s all delicius! Everywhere I g, I see restaurants and snack stalls — it seems t be a big part f their culture. Fd here is very reasnably priced, s it’s great fr my budget. The peple I meet are all very welcming twards me as a freigner, and I even seem t be a pint f interest! Hwever, hardly anyne speaks English in my area, s it can be a bit verwhelming at times. But I guess that’s why I’m here — t learn.
Right nw, I’m studying every day fr my HSK exam (a Chinese language qualificatin). But I als get a chance t explre the city. I usually get up extra early each mrning t enjy a freshly made breakfast n the street, and then I ften visit a park. There’s a lt f traditinal culture still alive in China. The parks are full f peple playing traditinal instruments, playing Chinese chess, and even writing calligraphy n the grund with giant paintbrushes!
My lng-term plan is t take a degree curse here. But it all depends n my expenses, s I intend t find sme wrk first. I’m staying in a hstel (招待所) drmitry right nw, but I’ve put an ad nline t find a friendly Chinese family fr a hme-stay. That way, my Chinese will imprve much faster, especially my written Chinese, which I find the mst difficult t grasp.
Well, that’s all fr nw. I hpe yu guys can visit China smetime!
Take care!
Jim
