During the experiment, they asked fluent speakers f Arabic, Krean, German and Spanish t list the wrst wrds they culd think f. Once they’d made a list f each language’s mst cmmnly used curses, the researchers cmpared these with neutral (中性的) wrds frm the same language. T their surprise, the rules still apply.
Next, the scientists asked the same peple t listen t pairs f invented wrds, such as “yg” and “tsg” and guess which wrd in each pair was a curse. The subjects were mre likely t guess that wrds withut L, R. W and Y, such as “tsg”, were curses. Finally, the researchers lked thrugh the dictinary fr English curses and their cleaned-up versins. Once again, the cleaned-up versins included mre f the sunds L, R, W and Y.
“Mst 20th-century language scientists held that any wrd culd have any meaning,” said Dr. McKay. “With curses, thugh, the sunds themselves seem t carry meaning. This can shape and change ur understanding f hw languages are frmed.”
