Autism is a lifelng disability that affects hw peple interact with thers. While the exact cause f autism is unknwn, its develpment in children has been linked t varius factrs --- including zinc deficiency (锌缺乏).
Accrding t a paper published in Frntiers in Mlecular Neurscience, the researchers demnstrated hw zinc shapes synapses (突触)during their early develpment. “Autism is assciated with variants f genes invlved in the frmatin and maturatin f synapses.” said Sally Kim, lead authr f the study frm Stanfrd University Schl f Medicine.
The team fund that when a brain signal was transferred via a synapse, zinc entered the target neurn (神经元), where it culd cmbine tw prteins, SHANK2 and SHANK3. Thse prteins cause changes in the cmpsitin and functin f the synapse.
The finding that zinc shapes the develpment f synapses via SHANK prteins suggests that a lack f zinc during early develpment culd ptentially cntribute t autism by damaging the functin f synapses, which enable brain cells t cmmunicate with ne anther.
“Understanding the interactin between zinc and SHANK prteins culd therefre lead t diagnstic treatment and preventin strategies fr autism,” suggested Jhn Huguenard, c-authr f the study.
It’s imprtant t nte, hwever, that at present it isn’t pssible t make any cncrete cnclusins r begin recmmending that children take zinc supplements. “Currently there are n cntrlled studies f autism risk with zinc supplementatin in pregnant wmen r babies, s the jury is still ut,” Craig Garner, c-authr f the study said. Taking t much zinc can reduce the amunt f cpper the bdy absrbs, weakening bnes. Furthermre, zinc deficiency des nt necessarily imply a dietary deficiency, and culd be caused by prblems with absrptin in the gut.
“Nevertheless, ur findings ffer a new mechanism fr understanding hw zinc deficiency might cntribute t autism,” Garner said.

29. Hw des zinc shape the develpment f synapses?
A. By transferring brain signals.
B. By cmbining SHANK prteins.
C. By damaging the functin f synapses.
D. By enabling brain cells t cmmunicate.
30. As fr zinc supplementatin in specific grups. Craig Garner thinks ________.

Rumrs: we’ve all heard sme and we’ve all spread sme. In mre traditinal times they shk entire families. Tday, they circulate differently because the way we share infrmatin has als changed.
The fact is that rumrs have great ptential t upset things, whether scially r persnally. We dn’t enjy being n the receiving end f ne, since they usually dn’t have gd intentins. They are smewhat veiled (掩饰的)messages.
Nrmally rumrs are ral messages: wrd f muth. The paradx (自相矛盾)is that there is n evidence t supprt rumrs, but the mre peple share it, the mre they see it as true. T finish defining rumrs, we think that they fllw certain very clear laws. Secrecy: The surce is unknwn. There is als a prven phenmenn that human beings usually frget the surce f a message befre they frget its cntent. Certainty: We hardly questin rumrs simply because f the mental effrt invlved. On the ther hand, n ne likes t dubt a persn wh cnvinces us that the infrmatin they spread is true. Change: It acts like a tree. New rumrs branch ut t fill in the gaps left by the initial rumr.
Anther prperty f rumrs is that they tend t becme viral. Each receiver is at the same time a ptential transmitter f the infrmatin. The receiver ften adds their wn pinin. Their manner and tne f transmitting it als changes it.
Hw can we end rumrs? The answer is as simple as it is impssible: preventing peple frm cmmunicating. A mre realistic respnse is equally difficult, althugh less than the first ne. It is that we shuld be critical f the infrmatin we receive. We shuld ask urselves if the surce is reliable. Ask (if pssible)the persn yu heard it frm whether they als trust the infrmatin. We shuld als think abut if the rumr benefits smene, and if that smene started the rumr.
One rumr t be especially cautius f is a rumr abut grups relatively unable t defend themselves. That’s why we say, “histry is always tld by the victrs.” The first payment the defeated must make is t accept the victr’s versin f the stry.
32. What can we learn abut rumrs?
A. We have all heard sme and believed them.
B. We’re happy t be the receiving end f them.
C. They may have negative influence n sciety.
D. They ften hide gd intentins in the messages.
33. Hw are rumrs like trees?
A. Rumrs keep changing, just as trees change their clr.
B. Rumrs are deeply rted in reality, like tree rts in the earth.
C. New rumrs have gaps, like the space between tree branches.
D. New rumrs grw ut f the riginal, like branches ut f a trunk.
34. What des the underlined wrd “viral” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Smething easily spread B. Smething acceptable
C. Smething easily defended. D. Smething beneficial.
35. Which f the fllwing may the authr agree with?
A. It is easy t prevent peple frm spreading rumrs.
B. Peple are ften active in judging the rumrs critically.
C. We shuld think abut the hidden message f the rumrs.
D. Stries tld by the victrs are usually better wrth trusting.
