When yu think f a map, is nrth n the tp r the bttm? Usually, maps are designed with nrth n tp, thugh when we think abut it, there is n lgical reasn fr this bias. After all, there is n up r dwn in space. S what is wrng with suth, east r west being n the tp f the map? The answer is: nthing at all. In fact, nrth-up maps nly became the nrm in the last few hundred years.
Ancient Egyptian maps had suth at the tp because the Nile River flws dwnhill frm muntain s in the suth t the Mediterranean Sea in the nrth. Mecca was t the suth f mst early Muslim civilizatins, and suth-up maps were designed s that viewers wuld lk up t see Mecca. Medieval Christian maps had east at the tp, as they believed the Garden f Eden was in the east. The nly early maps that had nrth at the tp were thse f early China because the emperr lived in the nrth.
Nrth seems t have settled at the tp f maps during the 16th century, largely thanks t a Flemish mapmaker, Mercatr. Mercatr was a great admire r f an early Greek mapmaker, wh, fr reasns nw unknwn, put nrth at the tp f maps, s Mercatr did, t. When Mercatr’s wrld map became the standard map t navigate the ceans, nrth up became standard as well.
What is the implicatin f this nrth-view f the wrld? Psychlgically’ peple tend t think f up as gd and dwn as bad. Just think f wrds and phrases like “upmarket”, “upbeat” and “mving up in the wrld”, and hw they cntrast with their ppsites. Because nrth is s cnsistently put at the tp f maps, peple nw think f nrth as gd, t.
Several attempts have been made in recent years by intrducing suth-up maps t the market. These maps nt nly give us a chance t see the wrld differently, but als give everyne the chance t see themselves n tp.
    28. What can we learn frm the first tw paragraphs?
    A. Nrth-up maps were rare in ancient times.
    B. Deciding up r dwn in space is ridiculus.
    C. Mecca maps were based n a legend.
    D. The suth-up map first appeared in ancient Egypt.
    29. Why is nrth assciated with gd?
    A. An illgical reasn. B. The spread f Mercatr’s maps.
    C. Peple’s preference fr up. D. An age-ld traditin in Greece.
    30. What is the authrs attitude t suth-up maps?
    A. Cautius. B. Supprtive.
    C. Uncaring. D. Disapprving.
    31. What’s the main purpse f the text?
    A. T explain a phenmenn. B. T cmpare varius facts.
    C. T crrect a cultural bias. D. T argue fr a viewpint.
    D
Scientists have discvered hw plants manage t live alngside each ther in places that are dark and shady. Plants in the deep darkness f a thick frest, where natural supplies are nt very great in amunt, wn’t attempt t tp their neighbrs in grwth as thse in mderate(中度的)shade d. In deep shade cnditins, it wuld be a waste f energy and harmful t survival because green shts wuld never be able t tp their larger neighbrs in grwth.
S hw d plants prevent such grwth in deep shade cnditins? The secret lies in the clcks inside them, say scientists frm the Jhn Innes Centre and the University f Bristl.
They have discvered that when plants ntice deep shade, this changes the expressin f genes in certain parts f the circadian clck(昼夜节律时钟)—the internal daily time fund in plants and ther living things. These clck cmpnents perfrm an additinal rle in preventing plants frm lengthening and ver tpping neighbrs.
The wrk identifies a previusly unknwn rle f the circadian clck in cntrlling plant develpment, and the findings may have pssible effects n bth natural plant ppulatins and crps. Prfessr Antny Ddd f the Jhn Innes Centre said, “The bilgical clck f plants plays a big part in their develpment and fitness. This wrk casts new light n a new rle f the circadian clck in adapting plants t cmpetitin with ther plants in their envirnments.” “It als gives us new insights int hw plants adapt t very deep shade, where resurces are very limited,” said Prfessr Kerry Franklin at the University f Bristl.
This wrk prvides evidence fr the stability f the circadian clck in stressful envirnments, and infrmatin that may be useful in develping new generatins f crps in a challenging climate.
    32. What d plants nrmally d in mderate shade?
    A. Struggle t preserve energy. B. Cmpete fr very limited resurces.
    C. Try t utgrw their neighbrs. D. Depend n each ther t survive.
    33. Hw des the circadian clck affect plants?
    A. By changing their gene expressin.
    B. By making them realize light change.
    C. By helping them adapt t the darkness.
    D. By cntrlling their grwth in deep shade.
    34. Accrding t Prfessr Antny Ddd, which statement is TRUE?
    A. The circadian clck’s rle in plant develpment remains unknwn.
    B. Plants’ living envirnments are very cmpetitive.
    C. The circadian clck affects plants’ adaptability t survival cmpetitin.
    D. Plants can adapt t very deep shade where resurces are very limited.
    35. Why des the authr write the text?
    A. T share a new discvery abut plants.
    B. T intrduce the rle f the circadian clck.
    C. T cmpare plants living in certain cnditins.
    D. T explain plants’ secret f living in frests.
