    Fur times I saw the lk n the by’s face turn t disappintment. But he cntinued. When we entered the fifth stre, he tld the bkseller what had happened. When asked why he wanted the atlas s much, the by said, “My father was a sailr, but he is dead.I want t knw abut the places he used t g t and I’m ging t be a sailr, t.”
    Deeply tuched, the bkseller sld the by an atlas and presented him with a new pencil fr his perseverance (毅力). I als gave him tw dllars fr ther bks he wanted. Tears in his eyes, he tld us his name is William Hartley. He hped t repay us sme day.
    Many years later, I left fr Liverpl by water. At the end f the jurney, there came a terrible strm and the ship was in truble. A great leak was filling the ship with water. The crew was made up f strng and able men. But after fighting fr ne whle night with the water still flwing in, the sailrs gave up desperately.
    But the captain didn’t give up. He rdered every man t his psitin and went belw t lk fr the leak. As he passed me, I asked whether there was any hpe f saving the ship. He lked at me, firmly saying “Yes, sir. As lng as ne inch f this ship remains abve water, there is hpe.”

His name is William Hartley,” I said excitedly. “I’m William Hartley,” the captain laughed. “The perseverance that gt yu that atlas many years ag has saved ur lives nw,” I said, feeling prud f him.
