Can yu imagine flying a plane thrugh a hurricane? If yu’re a hurricane hunter, it’s yur jb! Hurricane hunters fly airplanes t help the Natinal Hurricane Centre make predictins (预测) abut hurricanes, and give them the infrmatin needed t give warnings. Pilts find ut hw fast the winds are blwing, hw big the hurricane is, and which directin it’s mving in. This helps peple t be better prepared fr hurricanes as they cme near the castline.
Categries (类别) f Hurricanes
There are five categries f hurricanes. The categries help t make peple knw hw much damage a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed, the mre dangerus the strm.
Categry 1 - Winds 74-95 mph
Winds break branches, pull trees ut f the grund and verturn mbile hmes.
Categry 2 - Winds 96-110 mph

Winds are strng enugh t destry sme buildings and cause heavy damage t building rfs .

Later she began t walk daily and als tried adding extra mvement t her day, like climbing the stairs f her apartment building. Trpical cyclnes(热带气旋), including hurricanes and typhns, are nw mving at a slwer speed than they did decades ag, new research shws.
While having a cyclne travel with less speed may seem like a gd thing, it’s actually just the ppsite. Wind speeds within the strm remain high, but the whle system itself mves slwer, allwing punishing rains t stay lnger ver cmmunities. “Nthing gd cmes ut f a slwing strm,” says James Kssin, authr f the paper. “It can increase the amunt f time that buildings suffered frm strng wind. And it increases rainfall.”
In his paper, Kssin shwed that frm 1949 t 2016, trpical cyclnes acrss the glbe slwed their mvement by 10 percent n average. In sme regins (地区), the speed f thse strms slwed even mre as they hit land. In the western Nrth Pacific, the decrease was much mre manifest—almst a third. That means a strm that may already hld mre misture (水分)will have time t drp mre f it in each spt.
Kssin’s wrk was based n details f almst 70 years’ wrth f strms, but he didn’t try t determine what was causing the slwdwn. Still, the change is exactly what he and ther cyclne experts said, which wuld be expected frm climate change. With the plar regins warming faster than ther parts f the glbe, that is changing the pressure and reducing the winds that push these strms.
Christina Patricla, a scientist, called Kssin’s wrk imprtant and new and said she fund it reliable. “I was nt surprised by his findings,” she says. “But I was surprised by the speed f the slwdwn.”
Kssin hpes that scientists will begin building mdels that shw which places are likely t face the mst risk. Given that strms in sme regins are mving twards plar regins and already increasing in intensity(强度), cyclnes causing unusually pwerful rain may threaten places nt nrmally in their paths. Scientists must take actin t make thse places suffer less frm the disasters.
8. Why is the decrease in cyclnes’ speed a bad thing?
A. It leads the cyclnes t mve faster n the grund.
B. It causes the cyclnes t have higher wind speed utside.
C It makes hard rains and strng wind last lnger in ne place.
D. It results in mre typhns taking place in sme cmmunities.
9. What des the underlined wrd “manifest” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Obvius.B. Satisfying.C. Cnfusing.D. Impssible.
10. What des Paragraph 4 suggest?
A. Climate change in the plar regins is under cntrl.
B. Scientists find it hard t understand the slwer cyclnes.
C. Scientists shuld d further experiments in plar regins.
D. Climate change may be the cause f the slwdwn f the cyclnes.
11. Why des Kssin want scientists t build mdels in the last paragraph?
A. T find ut the nrmal paths f serius cyclnes.
B. T prve the speed f the cyclnes can be cntrlled.
C. T reduce the damage frm cyclnes t pssible areas.
D. T call n scientists t fcus n the danger f climate change.

Nt even the sea is safe frm the glare (强光) f humans’ light at night. Researchers published the first glbal maps f cean light pllutin. It shws large parts f the sea lit up at night. And that risks cnfusing r disrupting the behavirs f sea life.
Tim Smyth led a team t research where in the water this glw is strngest. Smyth and his clleagues started with a wrld map f man-made night-sky brightness that had been created in 2016. Then they added data n the cean and atmsphere. Sme data came frm shipbard measurements f man-made light in the water. Others came frm satellite images that judge hw clear the water is. Particles (微粒) in the water, such as tiny flating plants and animals, can affect hw far dwnward light travels. These factrs vary frm place t place and may change with the seasns. The team als used cmputers t cpy hw different wavelengths f light mve thrugh water.
Next, they wanted t knw hw that underwater light might affect animals. Nt all species will be easily affected. The team fcused n cpepds (桡足亚纲甲壳动物) . These cmmn creatures are a key part f many cean fd webs. They use light as a signal t mve all tgether t the dark deep, seeking safety frm ther surface creatures. Nrmally they use the sun r the winter mn as their signal. T much man-made light can mess up their usual patterns.
Light pllutin is strngest in abut three feet f the water. Here, man-made light can be strng enugh t cnfuse the cpepds. Nearly 2 millin square kilmeters f cean get such strng night light. That’s an area abut the size f Mexic. Farther dwn, the light gets weaker. But even 65 feet deep, it’s still bright enugh t bther cpepds acrss 840,000 square kilmeters f cean.
The team described its findings December 13 in Elementa: Science f the Anthrpcene.
12. Which f the fllwing best explains the underlined wrd “disrupting” in Paragraph 1?
A. Upsetting.B. Observing.C. Ensuring.D. Prtecting.
13. What d we knw abut cpepds frm the passage?
A. They are nt affected by underwater light.
B. They can escape attacks with the help f light.
C. They are main eaters f ther creatures.
D. They can weaken the effect f man-made light.
14. Hw des the authr shw the seriusness f light pllutin in Paragraph 4?
A. By stating pinins.B. By listing numbers.
C. By raising questins.D. By giving reasns.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Light Pllutin frm Sea LifeB. Living Cnditins f Cpepds
C. Discveries f CpepdsD. Light Pllutin Even in Sea
