When we’re thirsty, we drink. It seems s simple. But the science behind that decisin is amazingly cmplex, a Caltech researcher reprts in the jurnal Nature.
“There are many thirst-related checkpints thrughut the bdy and brain,” says Yuki Oka, the authr.
One f the first checkpints is passed when water reaches ur muth, which gives ur brain a refreshing feeling. Then ur brain needs t knw hw much water we are taking in t figure ut when we shuld stp. It can’t wait until the water is absrbed int the bldstream because that can take 15 minutes r mre. S the bdy has an additinal checkpint, which is swallwing. The act f swallwing acts like a meter (计量器), which the brain mnitrs t quickly determine hw much water is entering the bdy.
“Still, the brain takes a cmplex trust-but-cnfirm apprach t this infrmatin and the cnfirming prcess takes a cuple f minutes,” Oka says. “Cells near the liver (肝) als send messages t the brain when we are drinking. These cells aren’t sensing the water directly. Experiments shw they are respnding t a chemical that’s prduced when water makes the bld less salty. In a matter f minutes, the change is translated int mre sensitive chemical signal t tell the brain the exact changes.”
The checkpint near the liver is nt the final ne. There’s then ging t be changes in bld pressure alng the intestine (肠) which can be sensed as well, the study reprts.
“All f these cmplex multiple checkpints t regulate thirst can be expected, given the life-r-death nature f ur dependence n water. Hwever, it just shws hw cmplex an apparently simple prcess actually wrks in ur bdy,” Oka says.

When cultural heritage sites disappear, they’re gne frever. Hwever, they are being endangered at an alarming rate by rising seas (Venice), pllutin (the Taj Mahal) and verturism (Angkr Wat). Just t name a few.
But when we try t prtect these heritage sites, we als have t face such thrny questins as “What part f the past is wrth preserving and passing n t the next generatins? What duty d we we t the creatins f ur ancestrs? What strength d we draw frm their presence—and when, n the cntrary, d they becme a lead weight, preventing us frm prjecting urselves int the future?”

In February, 1945, ne f the mst destructive bmbing attacks f Wrld War II killed mre than 25,000 peple and reduced the city t ruins. With Dresden slwly rebuilt after the war, the Frauenkirche was left in ruins. But after German reunificatin, the church was recnstructed using many f its riginal materials, as a statement f peace and harmny.
Like the Frauenkirche, Ntre Dame, a landmark in Paris, which was destryed by fire in 2019, is being rebuilt as clse as pssible t hw it was befre, including using the riginal and pisnus metal—lead—fr the rf. That chice was cntrversial, as future chices are bund t be in the debate abut hw t restre and preserve histric buildings.
Perhaps, n ne can claim t have the right answers n preservatin. There may nt even be right answers. What we will d is t cntinue t take care f imprtant cultural heritage sites, as a matter f significance t humanity’s past, present and future.
