Stepping ut f the tent,I lked arund fr bears r tracks and saw nne.It wuld never be a gd thing t meet a plar bear.An Inuit (因纽特人) nce tld me that I shuld watch ut fr plar bears.He said that if I met a plar bear,I shuld keep the fllwing rules in mind.First,keep eye cntact,mve sideways r slightly frward,never backward,stay calm.D nt shw fear and stand beside a large bject t make myself appear as large as pssible.Weapns like flare gun(信号枪) are necessary,but d nt sht unless frced t.Dn’t wund a bear,r yu’ll make it even mre dangerus,and never run.
It was nly six ’clck,s I decided t have a leisurely breakfast f a bwl f milk pwder,ccnut flakes,and butter mixed with warm water.I sat n my sled(雪橇) t enjy my first breakfast f the expeditin nly t find that after the third spnful it was frzen.S much fr leisurely breakfasts!I added mre warm water and ate the rest as fast as pssible.
Suddenly I heard a deep,lng grwl cming frm Charlie’s thrat.In a flash I lked at him and then in the directin in which he was staring.It was a female plar bear fllwed by tw cubs(幼崽) slwly,purpsefully,tward me.They were tw hundred yards away.
