I’m 52, and as surprising as it may seem. I’m a gymnast. In a sprt fr yung girls, I have fund an unlikely path t jy. When I enter the gym, n matter hw much stress I might be feeling, my mind clears and I frget my life. I think f nthing but what I am ding.
When I was 9, I went every Saturday t a gymnastic academy. The cach had gray hair and wre ballet shes and had bundless enthusiasm. He wuld say, “Yu are ging t be a gymnast.” And I believed him. I vividly remember the first time I did a rund ff back handspring by myself, the weightlessness f it. I lived fr Saturday mrnings. I nly ever did gymnastics recreatinally — I didn’t even knw real gyms existed — but I always lved it.
That lng drmant lve came raring back in my frties. It happened in an instant, at parents’ day fr my daughter’s beginning gymnastics class. The bars were just sitting there, and I had this verwhelming urge t grab hld and swing. But I culdn’t make it thrugh the warm-up at the first adult class I went. I felt bad during cnditining. I was the ldest persn there. But that spark f memry glwed with pssibility. I went back t class again, and again. It was hard and it was humbling. But sn I was ding back handsprings like I used t.
There is nthing like the thrill f getting a new skill, that cmbinatin f speed, mechanics, timing, muscles, and bravery. There is an indescribable (不可言喻的) element, t, smething like faith. By the time we reach middle age, mst f us have had t deal with ur fair share f unwelcme surprises, like illness, family crisis r the death f a belved parent. But gymnastics has brught the mst delightful surprises — I keep getting better, vercming what I thught were limits, amazing myself by what I can d. At a time in life when many things feel like they are sliding dwn the slpe (斜坡) twards ld, gymnastics is a gift f fluency and cmpetence in mtin. I’m in the best shape f my life. I’m a better gymnast nw than I was at 16.
4 What inspired the authr t lve gymnastics when she was yung?

The wrld may have a new supercntinent within 200 millin t 300 millin years as the Pacific Ocean shrinks and clses.
Researchers at Curtin University in Australia and Peking University in China used a supercmputer t mdel the evlutin f Earth’s tectnic plates (地质构造板块) and the frmatin f a future supercntinent. Their findings were published in the jurnal Natinal science Review.
“Over the past tw billin years, Earth’s cntinents have cllided (相撞) tgether t frm a supercntinent every 600 millin years, knwn as the supercntinent cycle. This means that current cntinents are due t cme tgether again in a cuple f hundred millin years’ time,” said lead authr Dr. Chuan Huang, a research fellw in Curtin’s Earth Dynamics Research Grup and the Schl f Earth and Planetary Sciences.
The team’s simulatin shwed that due t the fact that Earth has been cling fr billins f years since its frmatin, the thickness and strength f the tectnic plates beneath the ceans have reduced ver time. As a result, the frmatin f a new supercntinent is mre likely t happen by the clsing up f the Pacific Ocean. Reducing by a few centimeters per year, the Pacific Ocean’s current reach f 10,000 kilmeters will clse up in less than 300 millin years.
“The resulting new supercntinent has already been named Amasia because sme believe that the Pacific Ocean will clse when America cllides with Asia. Australia is als expected t play a rle in this imprtant Earth event, first clliding with Asia and then cnnecting America and Asia nce the Pacific Ocean clses,” Huang said.
Changes in the distributin f cntinents and ceans will cause changes in climates, “particularly when cean currents are stpped by cntinental cllisin, r new cean currents are frmed when cntinents break apart,” said study cauthr Zheng-Xiang Li, distinguished prfessr in Curtin’s Schl f Earth and Planetary Sciences. “Earth, as we knw, will be cmpletely different when Amasia frms. The sea level is expected t be lwer, and the vast interir (内陆) f the supercntinent will be very dry with high daily temperature ranges.”
Researchers expect mre earthquakes as the cntinental plates cllide. Surrunded by a new super cean, the newly frmed supercntinent will als have decreased bidiversity.
Scientists are still trying t understand Earth’s supercntinent cycle, which is driven by heat and gravity. The research team wants t establish hw Earth’s tectnic plates started and when the first cntinents frmed, as well as what kicked ff the supercntinent cycle.“We are nly starting t lk at the entire Earth system, frm its cre t its atmsphere, as a clsely linked system that evlved tgether,”Li said.
    8. What leads t the frmatin f the new supercntinent?
    A. The rising temperature f the Earth.B. The expansin f the Pacific Ocean.
    C. The reduced strength f the tectnic plates.D. The appearance f many new tectnic plates.
    9. What is believed by sme scientists abut the new supercntinent?
    A. The invlving parts.B. Its climate pattern.
    C. The way it breaks apart.D. Its distance frm Australia.
    10. What will prbably happen t the newly frmed supercntinent?
    A. There will be a rise in the sea level.
    B. There will be lts f water in its interir.
    C. The variety f its living things will be reduced.
    D. Its temperature will stay the same all year arund.
    11. What des the last paragraph mainly want t shw?
    A. The entire Earth system faces an uncertain future.
    B. The rigin f the supercntinent cycle is hard t trace.
    C. The Earth’s supercntinent cycle will pse a big threat.
    D. There is mre t discver abut the supercntinent cycle.
    D
“Ging wireless is the future fr just abut everything!” That is a qute frm scientist Sreekanth Chalasani, and we can’t help but agree. Realizing this, a team f scientists has made a breakthrugh tward wirelessly cntrlling human cells using sund, in a technique called “sngenetics (声遗传学).” This cncept may seem strange but let us explain.
Basically, the term “sngenetics” means using ultrasund (超声波) t change the behavir f cells in a nn-invasive manner. “We already knw that ultrasund is safe, and that it can g thrugh bne, muscle and ther tissues, making it the ultimate tl fr cntrlling cells deep in the bdy,” says Chalasani.
Lw-frequency ultrasund waves can target a particular prtein that is sensitive t the signal. This research, published in Nature Cmmunicatins, fcused n TRPA1. When this prtein is stimulated thrugh the ultrasund waves, it als stimulates the cells which carry it. What type f cell is being stimulated depends n the utcme. Fr example, a muscle cell may cntract with stimulatin, r a neurn (神经元) in the brain will fire. In this experiment, scientists genetically marked cells with an increased cncentratin f TRPA1, making them the key targets f the ultrasund waves.
Currently, treating cnditins like Parkinsn’s disease requires scientists t implant electrdes (电极) in the brain which stimulate certain disrdered cells. Researchers hpe that sngenetics can ne day replace these invasive treatments.
In the future, the team wants t adjust the placement and amunt f TRPAI arund the bdy using the gene treatment. Gene delivery techniques have already been shwn t be successful in humans, such as in treating blindness. Therefre, it’s just a case f adjusting this thery t a different sund-based setting.
“Gene delivery techniques already exist fr getting a new gene—such as TRPA1—int the human heart,” Chalasani says. “If we can then use an external ultrasund device t activate thse cells, that culd really change pacemakers.” There is still a while t g befre this treatment can becme a reality. The future fr sngenetics, thugh, lks bright.
    12. What’s wrking principle fr sngenetics?
    A. Using medicine interventinal therapies.
    B. Changing cells’ shape with new equipment.
    C. Cntrlling cells in a nn-invasive manner.
    D. Using a kind f unique medical cmpsitin.
    13. What did the scientists d in the experiment?
    A. Change the cncentratin f the prtein.
    B. Find target cells fr treatment precisely.
    C. Analyze the prtein sensitive t the sign.
    D. Chse the type f cell t be stimulated.
    14. What can we learn abut sngenetics frm Paragraphs 4 and 5?
    A. It can be applied t ther fields besides medicine.
    B. It may replace sme traditinal medical therapies.
    C. It will ttally transfrm gene delivery techniques.
    D. It has succeeded in curing diseases like blindness.
    15. What’s the best title fr the text?
    A. Can cells be cntrlled by sund?
    B. Hw is sngenetics clinically used?
    C. Are gene delivery techniques available?
    D. What are applicatins f sngenetics?

I shuld have been ging t university n a schlarship because I came frm a lw-incme family, but a last-minute £100-a-year pay rise fr my mum pushed my family ver the threshld (门槛) fr what defined “lw-incme” and I was suddenly n lnger qualified fr £15,000 a year in schlarship mney. This news came after I’d been accepted by the university and signed the lease (租约) fr my accmmdatin.
Despite my family nt being labelled lw-incme anymre, I still wuldn’t receive any financial supprt frm my family as all the incme went tward taking care f my disabled brther and paying their wn bills. It wuld be tight, but because I had savings frm my part-time jb, I decided t g t university anyway. After paying my rent, I had £10.20 a week fr everything else including fd, tiletries, and schl supplies.
As I was in a new city, I really wanted t make friends, which was difficult when mst f the scial activities were expensive. Therefre, I jumped at the chance t d a relatively cheap cffee shp trip with my rmmates wh were pleasant t me.
I had £20 with me t get a cheap cup f cffee and my fd shpping fr a few weeks. S I headed fr the cffee shp. While paying, I pulled ut the nte and a handful f change and realized I culd pay withut breaking the nte, s I put it back in my pcket. It wasn’t until I arrived at the supermarket that I realized the nte was gne. What shuld I d? I was desperate it was the equivalent (相等物) f tw weeks f mney. My rmmates helped me lk fr the nte. Hwever, it was in vain. Finally, I went t schl empty-handed.
