Fr many peple this might have been the sign t end the prject. But nt ur father. As we skated ff the ice and returned t the kitchen fr ht chclate, he kept ging, patiently walking line after line. He stayed ut there, until afternn turned int early evening. The pl wuld have t wait fr warmer weather.
There’s a lessn in the Zambni abut fatherhd, I think: that it is nt abut being perfect in yur actins but perfect in yur intentin. When we feel disappinted with what might have been r we wish we culd change a chice we made in the past, we have regrets.
Regrets can be harmful when we dn’t want t accept them. T many negative (消极的) thughts and cntinuus cnsideratin can lead t stress and anxiety. This kind f spiritual and emtinal pain als affects ur bdies. Fr example, maybe yu didn’t stand up fr yur friend when smene attacked him by saying smething dergatry. Yu didn’t speak up at the time t clear his name. Yu end up feeling disappinted in yurself and dn’t want t be reminded f that. Or yu may remember the situatin all t well, but dn’t knw hw t vercme yur regret. Whatever it is, yu may suffer frm negative thughts r even sleepless nights, thus putting pressure nt yur bdy and mind.
But as the ld saying ges, a cin has tw sides. Regrets have advantages t. When we reflect (反思) n regrettable chices we made in the past, that’s a gd thing. We grw frm self-examinatin and can learn frm ur missteps. Inspired t be better, we imprve n ur decisin-making s we dn’t repeat ur mistakes.
Anther psitive side f regret is that it can mve yu clser t being yur best self. A study abut peple’s mst lng-lasting regrets was published in the jurnal Emtin, where scientists lked at the cnnectin between regret and an individual’s self-cncept (自我认知). The results shwed that peple were mre likely t regret nt living up t being that best persn and thus try harder t use their full ptential (潜力), when regrets abut their best selves were nt achieved.

Researchers have expected the ceans t get nisier because f increasing human activity. “The mre gds yu buy, the mre shipping yu have, s the mre nise yu have.” says Luca Pssenti, a scientist studying sund in the cean at the Ryal Netherlands Institute. But Pssenti and his c-wrker realized that climate change might als influence hw sund travels thrugh the water.
Human-caused climate change is changing cean temperatures, salt levels and acidity (酸度). S Pssenti’s team used cmputers t mdel hw thse factrs (因素) influence nise levels acrss the wrld’s ceans.
When waters becme mre acidic, they can’t take in sund at sme wavelengths as well, s thse sunds can travel further, adding t the nise in sme areas. This effect is relatively small. Other changes impact the sund level mre, the researchers fund. Changes t temperature and salt levels can change hw well different layers (层) f the cean mix, which, in turn, impacts hw sund travels.
The team predicted (预测) mdels f the wrld in abut 70 years if climate change cntinues. And then they cmpared them with mdels f the wrld nw. In the Nrth Atlantic, they saw an increase in sund levels in the upper 125 meters f the cean. This was caused mstly by ice melting (融化) ff f Greenland, frming a cld layer f water near the cean’s surface. Sund traveling thrugh water tends t g tward the cldest area. Regrets can be harmful when we dn’t want t accept them. T many negative (消极的) thughts and cntinuus cnsideratin can lead t stress and anxiety.
