The cncept f planning entire cmmunities befre their cnstructin is an ancient ne. In fact, ne f the earliest such cities n recrd is Miletus, Greece, which was built in the 4th century BC. Thrughut the Middle Ages and the Renaissance varius planned cmmunities (bth theretical and actual) were cnceived (构思). Lenard da Vinci designed several cities that were never cnstructed. Fllwing the Great Fire f Lndn in 1666, the architect Christpher Wren created a new master plan fr the city, cmbining park land and urban space. Several 18th century cities, including Washingtn D.C., New Yrk City, and St Petersburg, Russia, were built accrding t cmprehensive planning.
One f the mst imprtant planned city cncepts, the Garden City Mvement, arse in the latter part f the 19th century as a reactin t the pllutin and crwding f the Industrial Revlutin. In 1898, Ebenezer Hward published the bk T-Mrrw: A Peaceful Path fr Real Refrm in which he laid ut his ideas cncerning the creatin f new ecnmically sustainable twns. Hward believed that these twns shuld be limited in size and density, and surrunded with a belt f undevelped land. The idea gained enugh attentin and financial backing t lead t the creatin f Letchwrth, in Hertfrdshire, England. This was the first such 'Garden City'.
