Grwing up in Wlverhamptn, I lved bserving insects. When I was five, my dg destryed an ants’ nest. Trying t make it up t them, I started making little huses, using wd pieces and leaves. When my mther saw my wrk, she tld me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name wuld becme. Her wrds were sme lst n me, but when I saw ants in their new huses, curisity abut making small things was seeded.
As a teenager, I began wrking with new materials, and my designs became mre cmplicated and distinctive. I used many materials, including gld, t create my sculptures and prcessed them with tls I made. I smetimes wrked fr 16 hurs a day, and it tk me up t three mnths t finish a sculpture. I had t hld my breath during the prcess, and slwed my heartbeat t cntrl my fingers. It wasn’t actually an enjyable prcess — I culd nly enjy it when I’d finished.
My sculptures have taken me t incredible places. Hwever, I find it hard t celebrate these milestnes, as there’s always rm fr imprvement. One time, a fly landed n an Alice in Wnderland sculpture I was wrking n based n the tale. Its wings blew my Alice away when it left. I sught fr it fr hurs, yet it was tiny. The Alice is nw in Wnderland frever. But it did give me the chance t make an even better ne.
I was fund t have autism (自闭症) as an adult. Back in the 1960s, when I was at schl, there wasn’t much awareness f the cnditin. Sme pinted me ut as an example f failure; I shared the view then. Nw I treasure my autism. It’s made me fcused and pushed me t be the best I can be. I hld wrkshps in schls fr neurdiverse children, telling them my life stry and helping them create their wn figures.

Creating smells in virtual reality (VR) is a prblem that has prevented cnsumer VR devices frm ffering a full sensry experience in mst settings. Previus effrts t create smells in VR have invlved multiple wires, messy liquids, and heavy equipment that dn’t lend themselves t hme use.
T tackle the prblem. Dr. Yu Xinge at the City University f Hng Kng and Li Yuhang f Beihang University in Beijing develped tw wearable interfaces (接口). One can be attached t the skin between the nse and muth; the ther can be wrn n the face. Bth types can generate a smell in as little as 1.44secnds. The higher the heat, the strnger the smell, Yu says. That means that interfaces can get very ht—up t 60℃, which is dangerus fr human skin. But their interfaces are safe because f an “pen” design, which is an exit fr ht air, alng with a piece f chemical substance that frms a barrier between the skin and the actual device.
Artists have lng attempted t bring smells int entertainment. In 1960, Smell-O-Visin made its first and nly appearance with the film Scent f Mystery, which released pleasant smells during key plt pints thrugh air cnditining. But the effrt bmbed: viewers said during screenings, smells were either delayed r t weak t ntice. Smell-O-Visin never tk rt in Hllywd.
Yu used 30 different smells chsen fr their distinctive, recgnizable characteristics, like the smell f green tea. But many real-life smells are less memrable and might nt be as recgnizable. Additinally, the mini smell generatrs have yet t be prgrammed t wrk smthly with existing VR headsets. “Smell-equipped VR culd be helpful medically r industrially, but it’s hard t say hw this wuld wrk in the cmmercial field,” Jas Brks, a PhD student at the University f Chicag, says.
